Including the parent club, it was a 7-1 W-L record for the organization on Friday, which is a very pleasant way to start another summer weekend. We'll fill you in on Game Two of Garrett Mitchell's Arizona League rehab stint, while providing eyebrow-raising numbers on both Jakson Reetz and Joey Wiemer (as we search for the emoji with eyebrows moving in different directions ? ah, there it is). Plenty of insights to come, so let's kill the intro and move on, here we go! Transactions: None *** Nashville Pre-Game Media Notes Final: Nashville 6, Columbus (Guardians) 3 Box Score / Game Log Via the Sounds' site, game details, and we encourage readers to review each of the affiliate write-ups as part of their Link Report routine: Almonte Powers Sounds Past Clippers - Nashville Win Streak Reaches Seven with Fourth Straight in Columbus Lather. Rinse. Repeat. If the Sounds aren't on autopilot (In the best of ways), then it's pretty close. Power (Abraham Almonte HR #11, Jon Singleton HR #12), accompanied by speed (Pablo Reyes SB #10), joined by clean defense, and that's just on the position player side of things. Mix in another strong start (hello, wily Josh Lindblom) and stellar relief work, which is a given with this squad, and the proof is in the very tasty pudding. For someone who comments almost weekly on his pre-game interview show with Voice of the Sounds Jeff Hem about his lean roster, we currently count 17 (!) apparently healthy and active pitchers on Rick Sweet's squad. Almost surely at least one of the 40-man roster relievers (Trevor Kelley, Peter Strzelecki, Luke Barker) will accompany the Brewers on their upcoming road trip to Minnesota and San Francisco as a taxi squad member. But yeah Rick, on the mound, you're in good shape. Reyes, playing left field, walked three times here. Catcher Mario Feliciano played for the first time since July 2nd, 0-for-3 with a walk, but the fact that he was behind the plate pretty much indicates no concerning issue. Mini-trivia: How many catchers are currently on the 40-man roster? Four? Nope, it's five - Narvaez, Caratini, Severino, Feliciano, and don't forget Alex Jackson on the MLB IL. Jackson has a left middle finger sprain that has lingered for a full month now. Since we don't have video for this one, catch up down the foul line with starter Dylan File, and don't forget the most recent batch of Nashville pre-game audio. (We've asked if Biloxi's pre-games could be shared similarly, but it doesn't appear that's in the works for 2022 - next year we hope!) *** Biloxi Pre-Game Media Notes via the Shuckers' Virtual Press Box Final: Biloxi 10, Montgomery (Rays) 4 Box Score / Game Log Via the Shuckers' site, game details, please review: Biloxi Blasts Their Way To 10-4 Win Over Montgomery - Reetz Launches League-Leading 21st and 22nd Homers You just read the details, now watch multiple highlights, culled together by one of the two Biloxi sports outlets we often get reports from: Oh Jakson Reetz, your age 26 season continues to amaze. Reetz' previous career home run high was 13 at High-A in 2019. I do wish the MiLB Player Page game log included a running account of OPS by date, as it does for OBP and SLG, it would make my point here clearer -- Reetz has been remarkably consistent even on a day-by-day basis. But here we go on a broader and yet still gorgeous scale: April OPS: 1.041 May OPS: 1.066 June OPS: 1.017 July OPS: 1.156 vs. LHP: 1.176 vs. RHP: 1.015 Day night, home, away, it doesn't matter. Do the Brewers want to add Reetz to their 40-man roster before he exits in minor league free agency this fall, knowing they'd have three optionable years? Did he sign one of those two-year minor league deals last December? Is he playing his way into being an important part of an upcoming deadline deal? Whatever the case, thank you Jakson. Felix Valerio has been caught stealing seven times, but he's also been successful on 21 attempts. So, on the cusp of productive, but seven is seven... Wouldn't have thought LHP Brandon Knarr was at 91 pitches with that pretty line, but that explains the pull after five frames. As you just watched, Thomas Dillard is the most barrel-chested of all the classic barrel-chested Brewers players, majors or minors, in team history. Have we ever seen a switch-hitter with this physical profile? To top off being eminently fun to watch, Dillard has been increasingly productive. You rock it, Thomas, upper-body, thighs, etc. We should add he's avoided the injured list his entire career. It pains me to type this, but Joey Wiemer is broken, 3-for-42, all singles, with 17 K's and three walks. Would love to know the true status of the hand and/or thumb, everything has cratered at the plate since that missed week. *** Wisconsin Pre-Game Media Notes via their all-encompassing Virtual Press Box Final: Wisconsin 11, South Bend (Cubs) 3 Box Score / Game Log Via the Timber Rattlers' site, game details, please review: Wisconsin Bounces Back with 11-3 Win at South Bend - Smith strikes out Nine and Peters drives in three for Rattlers Now that's how you quickly recover from a walk-off grand slam loss! So much goodness here - the Canadian duo of Tyler Black and Tristan Peters were on base six times combined, though in very different ways, as the box score attests. Double-digit steal totals now for Joe Gray (13-for-13!), Black (12-for-18), and Peters (13-for-19). All successful on this night. LHP Russell Smith's last 19.2 IP - one walk, 25 strikeouts. Yee-hah! I realize his use has been in primarily lower-leverage spots, but RH reliever Tyler Gillies has tossed five shutout innings over his last three outings, and the F* Cancer comeback continues, yes, Tyler, keep pushing. *** Carolina Pre-Game Media Notes Final: Kannapolis (White Sox) 5, Carolina 0 Box Score / Game Log Via the Mudcats' site, details, please review: Carolina Totals Eight Hits in 5-0 Loss in Kannapolis - The Mudcats lost their third straight while suffering their league high eighth shutout loss When the Mudcats bats are quiet, they are really quiet. So sure, eight hits isn't awful, but they were all singles, the team was 0-for-7 with RISP, and stranded 11 overall. How good is Jackson Chourio? When you single and walk on a 1-for-3 night, and your OPS drops a point to .962, well, you've been solid. We'll give a shoutout to LH reliever Jakob Brustoski, who stranded two runners for RHP Fernando Olguin, who pitched well himself. That Cannonballers logo is glorious by the way. *** Up above, you watched Dylan File discussing the Arizona heat. Dry heat or not - it was 110 degrees at first pitch for both games in the desert Friday. Both games went nine innings! Final: ACL Brewers Gold 5, ACL Reds 3 Box Score / Game Log Twelve organizations field only one team in Arizona. Only the Giants and Diamondbacks, like the Brewers, field two. There is something to be said about having to spread the talent over two squads, so kudos to the Crew kids whenever they knock off one of these solo teams. The Golden Boys moved to 13-11 with this one, the first-place tied (w/Rangers) Reds falling to 17-7. 18-year-old middle infielder Jadher Areinamo (DH'ing here) was overmatched in a brief seven-game emergency stint in Wisconsin earlier this spring, but the talent he's shown in Arizona provides a hint as to why the organization trusted him with filling in for a bit. Two doubles and a single here, hitting .337 in Arizona now. Areinamo was part of the higher-profile group within the January 2021 international signing class that included Jackson Chourio (you've heard of him), Gregory Barrios (nice game here), Hendry Mendez, Luis Castillo and Daniel Guilarte, all performing well to very well in 2022. That signing class could prove to be looked back on very fondly down the road, we'll see. Free Ryan Middendorf. Like seriously, place the recent indy signing in the Biloxi bullpen already. Or Milwaukee, even... *** Final: ACL Brewers Blue 9, ACL Cubs 3 Box Score / Game Log Do they "fly the L" when the Cubs lose at their training complex? Because that would be awesome. Nice win for the 8-16 Blue Man Group. Garrett Mitchell was 0-for-4 with a walk and three K's, leading off as the designated hitter. He grounded out to second base in the lone plate appearance where the ball was in play. Career outing for 2nd-year RHP Yujanyer Herrera, who struggled when placed in Maryvale to begin his career in 2021. That'd be an interesting question for Tom Flanagan and the minor league staffs - a real analysis of what goes into the island vs. stateside placements, for instance would Herrera, a Venezuelan native, have benefited with a Dominican Summer League start to his career. For all the talk of successful Latin signings as of late, LH-swinging corner outfielder Luis Medina, who was MLB Pipeline's 13th overall ranked player for the July 2019 signing period, has not been on the good side of the fence. The $1.3 million signing added a low-pressure late home run to salvage a 1-for-5 evening. Medina now sits at a .560 OPS through his first 199 pro at-bats. Five-for-five in stolen base efforts here, including three by CF Reidy Mercado. The two Maryvale teams face each other Saturday morning. pre-game ritual includes cartoons on TV for the youngsters. *** Final: DSL Brewers #2 Squad 6, DSL Mets #1 Squad 2 Box Score / Game Log Both teams now 13-11 in a completely inconsequential factoid. 19-year-old rookie Dominican RHP Felipe De Los Santos allowed nothing but three singles in his five innings, striking out seven. Fellow countryman RHP Darling Solano, 18, did not allow an earned run in four-innings of piggy-back action, walking one and fanning seven. That's how you draw up a tandem for the day, folks, 18-year-old infielder Erick Reyes, in his 2nd season, pulled a line shot to left for his first professional home run. Doesn't matter who you are, that must have been a special moment for the Dominican native, who played third base Friday. 2022 has been a struggle for 2nd-year right fielder Jose Gonzalez compared to his 2021 figures, but he reached three times here and stole a base, thus Jose nets a deserved mention. *** Postponed: DSL Brewers #1 Squad at DSL Tigers #2 Squad, Rain It was 85 and sunny for the other contest. The island is larger than we think. Oh, those pop-up showers. Or, somebody left the sprinklers on the night before... Both DSL clubs are in action Saturday morning. *** The big-league Brewers have conveniently scheduled their Saturday late-afternoon game to allow everyone reading this to immediately turn to the men on the farm after the final pitch. Each of the four full-season clubs enjoys an early evening start, still all in road games. For a second consecutive day, large crowds in Nashville, Appleton and Zebulon were treated to exciting victories. For a second consecutive day in Biloxi, not so much. Don't worry, Shuckers fans, we're calling it now, big win coming Sunday. We've got the details on all of Saturday's action, including full recaps on the four rookie complex league games, so let's kick off the festivities this morning. Transactions: RHP Trevor Kelley optioned to Nashville. With the Brewers about to head back to Milwaukee, it's likely Kelley will actually return to the Sounds this time, rather than begin another taxi squad stint. We'll see. Catcher Brent Diaz was assigned to Nashville from Biloxi. This isn't the 26-year-old's first visit to AAA, as Diaz began the 2021 season with Nashville, but saw action in only two games before heading to Biloxi for the first time. In 31 AA games with the Shuckers this season, Diaz has a fine .262/.350/.495 line with six home runs. *** Nashville Pre-Game Media Notes Final: Nashville 10, Indianapolis (Pirates) 8 Box Score / Game Log Via the Sounds' site, game details, and we encourage readers to review each of the affiliate write-ups as part of their Link Report routine: Singleton's Blast Lifts Sounds Past Indians - Sounds erase early five-run deficit, go-ahead with Singleton’s two-run homer in 8th It's more than just the outstanding 46-30 record. This Nashville team is consistently entertaining and simply put, fun to follow. Sounds management (as is Brewers brass) must be gleeful over the re-establishment of this relationship. Perhaps the best gift given to Manager Rick Sweet this season was the mid-May bump of 5'9" 30-year-old LHP Andy Otero from Biloxi. Otero's effective long relief stints have saved Sweet's bullpen load on basically each of his ten appearances thus far. In Saturday's case, it led to a win, as you just read in the summary. Following the Sounds-related Twitter feeds Saturday was like following an orchestral crescendo, fitting for the holiday. Allow eight second inning runs? No problem, let's tend to business at hand. Kudos, Otero, Zack Brown and Peter Strzelecki. What a bullpen masterpiece. Nashville rests Abraham Almonte (being careful with his status), Mark Mathias and Corey Ray yet recovers for the win. Keep this in mind as we visit Biloxi's roster shortly. One potentially important note to follow - the above-mentioned Brent Diaz pinch-hit for Mario Feliciano in the bottom of the 4th, still a close game at the time, Sounds down 8-7. Voice of the Sounds Jeff Hem had no immediate info as I reviewed the MiLB.TV archive, though he may have passed along information later in the broadcast. Newcomer Patrick Dorrian -- Behold the flip - *** Biloxi Pre-Game Media Notes via the Shuckers' Virtual Press Box Final: Mississippi (Braves) 18, Biloxi 4 Box Score / Game Log Via the Shuckers' site, game details, please review: Early Runs Lead To M-Braves Blitz of Biloxi - Devanney Hits 10th Homer of Season for Shuckers Plain and simple, RHP Noah Zavolas took one for the team's sake here. No need to detail the carnage, the links are above. The Harvard product will need to work his way past this one. Infield defensive specialist Yeison Coca started in center field, just the third outfield appearance of his career, all this season with Biloxi. Why? Well... With Brent Diaz gone, the Shuckers bench to begin the game consisted of young OF Terrence Doston and backup catcher Jason Lopez as the nationwide hiring dilemma extends to Biloxi. Doston would come in for Joey Wiemer, but Voice of the Shuckers Garrett Greene put any injury concerns about that to bed. Speaking of bed, Joey's trying to wake up his bat - love the playful attitude, it'll happen, Joey. There was a bright spot as Cam reached double-digits in home runs for the first time -- *** Wisconsin Pre-Game Media Notes via their all-encompassing Virtual Press Box Final: Wisconsin 7, Cedar Rapids (Twins) 6 Box Score / Game Log Via the Timber Rattlers' site, game details, please review: Timber Rattlers Take a Thriller from Kernels - Wisconsin record eighth walkoff win of the season with a 7-6 victory in eleven innings The T-Rats are 7-1 to begin the second half! Gotta be riding in first place, right? Not so fast, say the 8-0 South Bend Cubs. Really? Guess where Wisconsin travels to Monday! No home runs or triples for either side, but this contest pretty much had everything else, as Chris Mehring's write-up which included plenty of words (good ones!), video clips, and full-game video highlights details for you. If that doesn't entice you to click above on a game summary, nothing ever will... Sure, one double was a gift, but 2021 33rd overall pick Tyler Black is the real deal. This was start #13 in CF by the way, one error and one assist in those games. Hopefully this will be a huge confidence builder for 6'8" LHP Russell Smith, what a performance. Taken exactly twenty picks after Black, this was Smith's second start after a 19-day break (injury or reset, unknown), and clearly his best performance in this, the TCU product's first season of action. *** Carolina Pre-Game Media Notes Final: Carolina 4, Fayetteville (Astros) 3 Box Score / Game Log Via the Mudcats' site, details, please review: Mendez Homers and Collects Four Hits in 4-3 Victory - The Mudcats won their third straight with a crowd of 5,582 on hand in Zebulon As good a place as any to remind you to at least occasionally dig into the various Media Notes that we link to, even if at minimum the first page of each. We know we provide a ton of information within each report, and you only have so much time each day to dedicate to consuming as much as possible (and we appreciate it!), but yeah, do yourselves a favor and take that bit of advice. I'm on board with Victor, how much of a blast (literally!) is playing in front of 5,582 in Zebulon for these kids. Maryvale's attendance? Not quite. Did anybody else think like me within the hiring and service industry quagmire we're all facing, how were the Mudcats able to have enough help in place to service such a massive short-term bump in attendance? Since Mark Attanasio owns Carolina, was he behind the grill? Was David Stearns tossing peanuts? RF/CF Hendry Mendez posted an .879 OPS in 40 games as a 17-year-old in 2021. The sledding has been tougher in 64 2022 games, but Mendez raised his OPS 37 points to .665 in this one evening. What whip in this particular swing! MLB Pipeline is watching -- Admit it, you immediately overlayed this into the Milwaukee big-league dugout. *** Final: ACL Brewers Blue 4, ACL Brewers Gold 3, eight innings (scheduled for seven) Box Score / Game Log The Golden boys tied things up in the top of the final scheduled frame on catcher Jason Ollarve's two-run home run pulled to right. Ollarve only turned 18 in May, this is his second season (first stateside), and a big moment for his first professional home run. Loving all the LH-swinging catchers infused in the system. Blue then went down in order, sending the game to extra's and zombie/ghost runner territory. Bouncing back from surrendering the lead, Blue RHP Samuel Dario dominated the 8th, getting three consecutive swinging strike three's. Blue's victory came via K - intentional walk - wild pitch (runners now on 1st and 3rd) - pop out - stolen base - another intentional walk - and finally a traditional walk to end things. A bit of over-managing it seems. Three Gold batters were HBP, and one Blue batter plunked. One of those plunkees, Gold infielder Jose Caballero (playing second base Saturday), with a .366/.481/.415 line through 13 games, had to be lifted immediately. Hate to see that, especially in what is in effect, an intrasquad game. Caballero had stolen his 4th base of the season (in as many attempts) earlier in the game. Thirty-two K's in the game vs. four walks. Pitching coaches were pleased, anyway. The two most impressive pitching performances were from a couple of 24-year-olds who got late starts in affiliated ball - recent independent league signee RHP Ryan Middendorf who has been nearly perfect in his five appearances (0.55 WHIP, 0.00 ERA), and second-year Dominican signing LHP Leoni De La Cruz. As is the norm in the desert, both teams will enjoy Sunday off. *** Final: DSL Phillies Red 14, DSL Brewers #1 Squad 9 Box Score / Game Log A six-run 3rd inning saw the home team Brewers up 8-3 at that point. I'll help you with the math, it was 11-1 Phillies over the final six innings. Only one of six Uno pitchers represented well, and that was 16-year-old (17 in August) Mexican native Manuel Rodriguez. Rodriguez got two outs to strand an inherited runner upon entering in the 5th, then added two scoreless innings. Well, well, bonus baby Jhonny Severino, lookee here, 4-for-5 with a double. In his last four games, Severino is 12-for-18 with four doubles, a triple and a home run (two K's). So much for his slow start. He did commit an error at shortstop, his 11th overall on the season, his 6th while playing short (11 games there). Catcher Ludwin Tejada only turned 17 years old in May. Playing in his 7th pro game, Tejada singled four times and is now 8-for-19 (two walks, only two K's). Tejada is another LH-swinging catcher, as the Crew seems to have their fair share in the lowest levels of the chain, nice. Second baseman Angel Pereira exited the game after he grounded out in the bottom of the 7th. Simply noting this should his absence end up as extended. *** Final: DSL Tigers #1 Squad 6, DSL Brewers #2 Squad 4, seven innings as scheduled Box Score / Game Log Crew #2 led 4-3 after four, but a three-run Tiger 6th sealed the deal for the home club. It's just become a part of the box score perusal routine. Which position players left the game and if possible, determine why. Rookie infielder (played second base Saturday) Demetrio Nadal is celebrating his 18th birthday today, but hopefully he's not nursing a major injury. Nadal was hit by a pitch in the 2nd, and though he initially remained in the game, left to begin the 4th. Nadal's substitute, 16-year-old Donis Rodriguez, stole two bases after entering, though he also was picked off once. All six of the youngster's hits are singles thus far, though he's already stolen seven bases in eight attempts and has a .171/.383/.171 line after just 35 at-bats (nine walks, ten K's). Oh, the uniqueness we can find in those young teenage numbers. Like their Arizona counterparts, Sunday is Funday on the island. Wear your sunscreen! *** The only matinee on Sunday is in Appleton, as fireworks continue to be the star with a rare trio of Sunday evening games on tap. Sounds win big, Timber Rattlers score big early and hang on. Mudcats win behind a big mound performance by an exciting 19-year-old. Shuckers look forward to bigger things Saturday. Here's your theme song, Brewers farmhands, for the next three days. 'Cause baby, you're a firework Come on, show 'em what you're worth Make 'em go, "Oh, oh, oh" As you shoot across the sky Baby, you're a firework Come on, let your colors burst Make 'em go, "Oh, oh, oh" You're gonna leave 'em all in awe, awe, awe Katy Perry's complete lyrics on "Firework" are under-rated. Transaction: RH reliever Trevor Kelley was recalled to Milwaukee from Nashville - Kelley had spent the past several days with the big-league Brewers as a member of their taxi squad after his June 28th option. Perhaps you heard Craig Counsell discuss the complexities and balancing act of the taxi squad on his Friday WTMJ pre-game interview, how to keep players ready for action when clearly, they can't get into formal games. Counsell only foresees the taxi squad existing purely for Covid-related reasons. *** Nashville Pre-Game Media Notes Final: Nashville 13, Indianapolis (Pirates) 4 Box Score / Game Log Via the Sounds' site, game details, and we encourage readers to review each of the affiliate write-ups as part of their Link Report routine: Sounds Even Series With Two Big Innings - Ethan Small logs second consecutive quality start, earns fifth win of the year There were some striking similarities between this game and the blowout 19-2 thumping by Milwaukee Friday night over Indianapolis' parent club. The Brewers put together eight- and seven-run frames, while the Sounds twice plated five in an inning (and added a three-spot for good measure). Both clubs had their aces on the mound (Corbin Burnes, Ethan Small ). After a stretch of four starts in which he walked four, one, five and four batters, never going more than 4.2 innings, Small has back-to-back starts with one base on balls over 13 innings. Small fanned ten on June 25th, and just one Friday night. Do you see an enigma - a mystery wrapped in a riddle? Have to love those recent efforts, though! Congrats to 26-year-old RH reliever Luis Contreras on his one-inning scoreless AAA debut, though he loaded the bases with one out before working out of his jam. Easier to catch foul pop-ups with a catcher's mitt? Pedro Severino was charged with an error on a dropped foul fly while playing first base. going to be fascinating what happens there. Speaking of a mystery wrapped in a riddle, going to be fascinating what happens there. Mystery #3 - what happened to Pablo Reyes mid-game? I try to make sense of it here. Brice Turang was on base three times, but do you know what else? All 25 of Turang's hits in June were singles. In May, just three of 27 hits went for extra bases. Turang batted .260 (OBP .295) and .263 (OBP .327) respectively those months. Naturally, his lone base hit Friday was indeed a single. Meanwhile, Abraham Almonte has no such issue with XBH's. With Sal Frelick (apparent hamstring) and Gabe Holt (unknown injury) sidelined but not on the injured list, the only two current bench players are the backup catchers, Nick Kahle and Jason Lopez. Fun for 21-year-old CF Terence Doston to be in the mix, but for someone who has yet to even see Carolina or Wisconsin, is this best for his development curve? Surely, we thought Doston's May 19th Biloxi placement was a temporary emergency assignment. Only one misfire in five starts at the AA level for LHP Brandon Knarr, he's so solid. It's a darn shame he'll always go down as "undrafted", when clearly that was only due to the 2020 five-round draft. When he hits MLB, that won't matter. If you're a subscriber, you'll read that The Athletic's Will Sammon ended up including Knarr (along with OF Joe Gray, Jr. and RHP T.J. I know it was included in the detailed game summary you just read (you did, right? No? I'll wait...), but the video below is mandatory viewing, if for nothing else that Ashton McGee' s huge night was awesome, yet the most entertaining moment was his face-plant/stumble trying to stretch his gapper to a triple. And do yourself a favor whenever Chris Mehring and Kyle Lobner make their Postgame Podcast available and find time for the approx. 20-minute listen. What to make of this performance by LHP Antoine Kelly ? Bizarre comes to mind. Kudos to the Cedar Rapids squad, not a single Timber Rattler was hit by a pitch after half-a-dozen Kernels were plunked in the game. Thankfully no one had to exit after their HBP. And hopefully no retaliation after a night of caring to the bruises. Awesome to have the April version of catcher Darrien Miller back, after his May slump and injury time off. Six weeks later with Carolina, Cruz has barely more walks (ten) than starts (nine). Talk about wishing our lives away, but I bet many of us can't wait to see the fruits of these lower-levels and what we're talking about in three or four years. Consider this - it's been nine games without a multi-hit effort by Jackson Chourio (double in this one), yet his OPS still sits at .938. *** Final: ACL White Sox 4, ACL Brewers Blue 2 Box Score / Game Log One bad inning, a four-run 2nd, hurt 19-year-old 2nd year Dominican RHP Arielbi Gonzalez and the club, despite five stellar innings of relief work by three of Gonzalez' teammates. Monster game for 2021 14th round pick Jace Avina - a triple shy of a cycle, but with four hits (two singles), so even better than your standard "triple shy of the cycle" comment. The recently turned 19-year-old out of a Nevada high school did not see formal action last summer. This is probably a good time to link to the scouting reports on Avina we had available on draft day 2021. So yes, add another center field prospect into the mix, .993 OPS through his first 61 AB's. Tough to win when RISP shows 0-for-7. *** Final: ACL Brewers Gold 4, ACL D-Backs Black 3, seven innings as scheduled Box Score / Game Log Second baseman Gregory Barrios scored the go-ahead run in the top of the final frame when he doubled with two out, and later crossed the plate on a wild pitch. Sweet! *** Final: DSL Texas Blue 8, DSL Brewers #2 Squad 7, eleven innings Box Score / Game Log Via @damuelle, from our daily as-it-happens discussion thread on the Minor League Forum: I love the DSL Brewers2 squad giving us a reminder that they're essentially high schoolers, so expect bizarre outcomes from time to time: No hit through six innings and trailed 3-0 Scored five runs on one hit in the 7th inning for a 5-3 lead Scored two runs in the 11th inning to re-take the lead at 7-5. They still had only one hit in the entire game at this point, but then collected a 2nd (meaningless) hit later that same inning Lost 8-7 in the bottom of the 11th. Outhit 10-2 in the game, but collected eight walks and three HBPs *** Postponed: DSL Tigers Blue at DSL Brewers 1 *** All evening action at the full-season affiliate home parks Saturday, while the DSL kids wrap up their week of play and the two Maryvale teams square off in morning action. Monday's action on the Brewers farm was limited to Arizona and the Dominican Republic, not unusual for the first day of the workweek. And while the few players who may eventually see big-league action are a half-decade or more from that MLB debut, we can dream on their exploits as we continue to chronicle each game for you. Transaction: INF Pablo Reyes optioned to AAA Nashville *** ACL Summaries compiled by @damuelle, DSL by yours truly Final: ACL Brewers Blue 7, ACL Giants Black 1, seven innings as scheduled Box Score / Game Log The Brewers in Blue improved to 4-12 with a comfortable victory over the 11-3 Giants Black team in this seven-inning game. 19-year old (turning 20 this Friday) starting RHP Alexander Vallecillo won his second straight game, giving up just one run on three hits while striking out 11 hitters and walking one. He’s now K’d 27 batters in 20 innings pitched. The team jumped out to a 5-0 second inning lead on a Jonatan Guzman two-RBI single, Jace Avina (season OPS .869) RBI double and Daniel Guilarte (season OPS .821) two-RBI single. Avina also doubled and scored on a Guilarte RBI single in the fourth inning. Dual-threat Quinton Low tripled and scored in the fifth inning to complete the scoring. The 13th round 2021 draft pick has pitched in three games (four innings – 0.00 ERA) and also played 10 games at first base (40 plate appearances - .623 OPS). Registering eight hits in 28 at-bats sounds a lot better than striking out 13 times in 28 at-bats. Both happened for the Blue squad in this game, with OF Eduarqui Fernandez victimized three times to drop his OPS to .779. DH/INF Alexander Perez stole two of Blue’s four bases in the game. 19-year old RHP Samuel Dario (3.00 ERA, 1.08 WHIP in 12 innings this year) bounced back from his last relief outing, pitching a scoreless seventh inning. Final: ACL Padres 7, ACL Brewers Gold 3, seven innings as scheduled Box Score / Game Log The loss dropped the Gold team to 9-7. Although they trailed 6-0 early and never really threatened the Padres, Gold had solid traffic throughout: 2-for-10 with runners in scoring position, ten men left-on-base. They left men on base in every inning of the seven-inning contest. Starting 20-year old RHP Domingo Mejia had his shortest outing (2 innings, 5 runs, 4 hits, 3 walks, 2 Ks), then RHP Trevor Tietz didn’t fare much better (2 innings, 2 runs, 3 hits, 2 walks, 2 Ks). However, let’s give credit to 19-year old LHP Fraudy Maldonado, who covered three scoreless innings, conceding just one hit and no walks. Normally reliant on strikeouts (38 Ks in 26 1/3 career innings entering the game), he managed to get the job done without registering any K in this one. The 2019 international signee of the Mets never got to debut with them (2020 Covid wipeout, March 2021 release), so let’s hope he continues to show them what they’re missing. Offensively, 18-year old INF Jadher Areinamo has to feel good about the first homer of his minor league career, a solo shot in the seventh inning to raise his season OPS to .851. 18-year old OF Luis Castillo reached base twice (single, walk) to keep up his average (.407 this year) and OPS (1.153). 19-year old INF Jesus Parra still has a troublesome BB/K ratio (3/14 this year; 4/35 last year), but the 2018 signing ($210k bonus) is seeing better results: .265 AVG / .333 OBP / .469 SLG. He doubled, singled and walked in a 2-for-3 effort in this game. 18-year old major 2021 signing SS Gregory Barrios picked up two singles to lift his season OPS to .685. 19-year old INF Jose Caballero went 0-for-2, but still reached base twice (walk, hit-by-pitch), so his season OPS didn’t suffer much (now .918). *** Final: DSL Brewers #1 Squad 8, DSL Cardinals 1 Box Score / Game Log Any win over the Redbirds is a reason to celebrate. Dominant win, all the better! 19-year-old 2nd-year Venezuelan RHP Kevin Briceno was wondering why he's not stateside prior to the game (our words, not his, obviously) and he simply went out and dominated over five innings - 2 H, 1 R (a home run), zero walks and nine K's. Six of the 12 Team Uno hits were doubles, including two by switch-hitting first baseman Arnys Rodriguez. A double was among the four base hits by 17-year-old bonus baby third baseman switch-hitting Jhonny Severino, a good point to turn the corner on his pro debut season. Severino handled his one ground ball chance cleanly, as he has struggled in that regard early on. Switch-hitting (catch a theme here?) center fielder Luis Lara, the 17-year-old who has been featured prominently here since Day One, doubled and singled. Here's how I look at complex league box scores. Once it's established that there is a level of really solid numbers being put up by a collection of youngsters, give me the crooked numbers on their lines. Clearly this will mean more in another month. It's a nice note if a player with a .500 OPS coming into the game gets three base hits, but give me sustained success, produce "stars" within their current level, and move on. So, for instance, Lara has been a stud in this way. Wonder how many of these switch-hitters will still be doing so in two years? Splits too small to analyze at this point, but love that the Brewers are both targeting and encouraging this. Poor St. Louis organization, not enough prospects to field two DSL teams... *** Final: DSL Phillies Red 12, DSL Brewers #2 Squad 2 Box Score / Game Log A double and two singles for 18-year-old 2nd-year Venezuelan native Brayan Oropeza. Primarily a catcher, this was his second game at first base this season. A 1.502 (!) OPS tells us he's off to a sizzling seven-game start to his season. *** It's nothing but home cooking for the Brewers' top four affiliates this week - Organizational Scoreboard including starting pitcher info, game times, MiLB TV links, and box scores Arizona Complex League Scoreboard Dominican Summer League Scoreboard Standings and sortable stat pages Current Milwaukee Brewers Organization Batting Stats and Depth Current Milwaukee Brewers Organization Pitching Stats and Depth View full article

It was an entertaining night on the Brewers farm. Ethan Small showed once again what he's quite capable of, although it had been a while. Biloxi's lineup always seems to provide highlights, though bullpen inconsistencies continue. Wisconsin's Joe Gray Jr. seems primed to totally bust out of his 2022 struggles, and by the way, we're going to blow up the internet with Jackson Chourio call-up speculation based on street clothes - yes, street clothes. So, I'll remind everyone now - we are a Brewers fan site. We are not professional journalists crossing all the T's and dotting all the I's of confirming juicy tidbits of information. Heck, the word fanatic is even in the enhanced Brewerfan name now. So, like you, let us have our fun. And if young Mr. Chourio is back in the Mudcats lineup when it gets announced late this morning, so be it. Then at least we gave you a few hours to let your mind race and figure out how you'd get to Appleton on Tuesday. Transactions: Brewers RHP Peter Strzelecki optioned to Nashville. RHP Trevor Gott and INF Mike Brosseau returned to Milwaukee from Wisconsin. *** Nashville Pre-Game Media Notes Final: Nashville 2, Gwinnett (Braves) 1 Box Score / Game Log Via the Sounds' site, game details, and we encourage readers to review each of the affiliate write-ups as part of their Link Report routine: Small Leads Vihuelas de Nashville to Victory - Nashville starter Ethan Small strikes out season high in 2-1 win Small, Hobie Harris and Luke Barker needed to be near-perfect as the Sounds did not have an at-bat with a runner in scoring position all game. So yes, thank you, David Dahl - It's going to be pretty darn interesting how the big-league Brewers end up shaking out the three-catcher situation - first game in a Sounds uniform for Pedro Severino: Ethan Small's game logs - you have to go back six starts to May 24th for the last time Small had a truly positive result. *** Biloxi Pre-Game Media Notes via the Shuckers' Virtual Press Box Final: Pensacola (Marlins) 8, Biloxi 7 Box Score / Game Log Via the Shuckers' site, game details, please review: Late Rally Comes Just Short In 8-7 Loss to Wahoos - Valerio, Devanney & Coca All Record Multi-Hit Efforts Despite five walks, starting LHP Brandon Knarr limited the damage, so it was left to normally reliable relievers Luis Contreras and Harold Chirino, but each faltered. Both had recently come off relatively brief injured list stays (this was not the first outing back for either). Originally given the day off, Joey Wiemer was called to pinch-hit in a big spot in the 9th, down 8-6, runners on 2nd and 3rd, no one out. Wiemer was called out on strikes, and though another run came around on Yeison Coca's single, the rally came up just short. Coming off a combined six hits in games of June 16th and 17th, we haven't seen 2B/3B Gabe Holt on the field since. Noah Campbell reached base twice more, this was noted prior to Friday's game: Just back from Nashville, Nick Kahle goes oppo. Kahle has only 17 at-bats on the season, acting primarily as the bullpen catchers at both locales while healthy on the rosters, must be frustrating - Here's a reminder that Felix Valerio does not turn 22 years old until December. Other than the 4.27 BB/9, every other number, ratio, etc. in 22-year-old Antoine Kelly's 2022 stat line is absolutely glorious. Nashville wins and maintains its game-and-a-half lead through 69 games in a season that isn't split in half. Biloxi is victorious but their win won't count towards a playoff chase as their 2nd season doesn't begin until Tuesday. Nice triumph for Wisconsin and the Timber Rattlers can place that on their playoff ledger as they move to 1-0, while the Mudcats, feeling the sting of this week's disappointing results and the loss of their first half division lead, continued to stumble due to an ill-timed offensive funk to fall to 0-1. Transactions: INF/OF Mark Mathias optioned to AAA Nashville (as INF Mike Brosseau returns to Milwaukee via end of rehab stint) C Pedro Severino sent to AAA Nashville on rehab assignment (assignment transferred from Biloxi) C Nick Kahle assigned to AA Biloxi from AAA Nashville RHP Arnaldo Hernandez placed on AA Biloxi’s 7-day IL RHP Ryne Moore placed on High-A Wisconsin’s 7-day IL OF Larry Ernesto released from ACL Brewers Blue Has a player ever been literally released mid-game? A reminder of our post in yesterday's report: 21-year-old switch-hitting OF Larry Ernesto made his 2022 debut, getting called out on strikes in the bottom of the 1st, and then was replaced defensively in left field immediately. Planned one-inning re-introduction? Remarkably, this is already Ernesto's fifth year in the system (2020 counts). Since signing for $1.7 million in June of 2017, Ernesto has posted a .605 OPS in 119 games, with a nearly 38% strikeout rate in 426 at-bats. Ernesto was 16 years old when he was handed that bounty. Big unfortunate misfire. *** Nashville Pre-Game Media Notes Final: Nashville 8, Gwinnett (Braves) 3 Box Score / Game Log Via the Sounds' site, game details, and we encourage readers to review each of the affiliate write-ups as part of their Link Report routine: Vihuelas de Nashville Even Series with Gwinnett - Nashville collects season-high 19 hits in win The box score is a feast for the eyes, yet when you see the individual numbers, one realizes an eight-run output was under-performing in a way. As @wibadgers23noted in our Minor League Forum "day-of" thread, check out how many baserunners Garrett Whitley and Brice Turang stranded during their own at-bats. Corey Ray definitely thought this was out and that's why what should have been a triple wasn't, as the broadcast crew picked up on. We'll only give a minor slap on the wrist as there were two outs, less urgency to reach third base. Big night for Corey - build up trade value this month, sir. Quality start when you allow ten hits in six innings? When nine of the hits are singles and you walk none, it sure is, Dylan File. The Sounds love their "File" puns. The Biloxi lineup gives us entertaining action on most nights, it really does. It's been a struggle in 2022 (.564 OPS in 69 at-bats at two levels) for former Brewers farmhand infielder Devin Hairston. I'll be back in a bit from the DSL, here's Daniel with the Arizona updates: Final: ACL Rockies 7, ACL Brewers Blue 3 Box Score / Game Log Another day, another loss, unfortunately for the Brewers in Blue, dropping their record to 3-11. 20-year old OF Eduarqui Fernandez provided the main highlight, smacking his second homer of the year to tie the game 2-2 in the top of the second inning. His season slash is now .277 / .306 / .532. Just as important, he didn’t strike out in this game. 21-year old switch-hitting LF Reidy Mercado hadn’t played for 13 days, but was impressive in his half-game action: 2-for-2 with an infield single and a double. Let’s hope his fifth inning exit in favor of Luis Medina was pre-planned as part of a gradual return from injury. 20-year old starting RHP Andy Garcia gave up four runs in five innings, but his peripherals were decent: four hits, two walks, six Ks. Let’s focus on the positives. Meanwhile, 19-year old Arielbi Gonzalez was hit harder than usual (five hits in two innings of work), but struck out four Rockies. It was 105 degrees at Salt River Fields at Talking Stick. Final: ACL Royals 7, ACL Brewers Gold 6 Box Score / Game Log All the runs came early in this one, as a 7-6 fifth inning scoreline held up for the remainder of the contest, unfortunately with the Gold men on the wrong end of it, dropping their record to 8-5. 20-year old RHP Phili Silverio pitched three encouraging scoreless innings, striking out six while yielding only a harmless single and walk. Taking the cue from Silverio, 20-year old RHP Fray Morelo and 19-year old LHP Fraudy Maldonado combined on another three scoreless innings, striking out three and probably making the manager wish he'd gone to the bullpen earlier. Starting 19-year old RHP Patricio Aquino wasn’t able to build on a terrific prior outing, giving up seven runs (six earned) on eight hits (four of the extra-base variety) in three innings of work, though did manage to punch out six batters. The Gold team will rue the missed chances, leaving the tying run on 3rd base in the 5th inning, 2nd base in the 6th inning and then ending the game at 3rd base on a base running blunder (registered as a caught stealing: pitcher to third baseman). The team went 1-for-11 with runners in scoring position, though the opposition wasn’t much better at 2-for-12. 20-year old 3B Carlos Roa hasn’t been getting regular playing time (last hit was June 6th), but reminded us that “everyone’s a prospect or they wouldn’t be here” by going 2-for-3 with two doubles, a walk and no strikeouts. Impressive 18-year old RF Luis Castillo (1.202 season OPS) also reached base three times, going 1-for-3 with a double and two walks. SS Jose Caballero (.997 season OPS), 2B Jadher Areinamo (.792 season OPS) and LF Eduarh Colina each reached base twice via a single and walk. 18-year old DH/INF Gregory Barrios had reached base five times on Thursday, but went 0-for-5 today. Yet he still managed an RBI and only struck out once. Again, look at the positives! 105 degrees at American Family Fields of Phoenix in this 3-hour, 42-minute tight contest. Luis Lara, who tripled, singled and walked to raise his OPS to .992. Only three walks, but also only three strikeouts, and as long as we're "only'ing" this sentence, only one stolen base in three attempts. Much to work with and build upon, though. For the victors, first pro homers for RF Irving Igualas (1.050 OPS) and LF (but DH'ing for the first time here) Francisco Nina (.852 OPS). Igualas is a LH bat, Nina, batting from the right side, won't turn 18 until September. Check out the line score within the box. The teams matched outputs in each of the first five innings. Crew Uno squandered a 1st and 2nd, one-out opportunity in the top of the 6th. Nashville began their homestand in style, as did Biloxi, though we now have concerns with Sal Frelick and an upper leg injury. Wisconsin is crawling to the first-half finish line, yet we still have much to digest there in terms of video and audio. Carolina is clinging to the slimmest of first-place leads with just two games remaining in the playoff chase. All four rookie-level clubs played, only one fared well. Here we go! Transactions: - LHP Justin King promoted to High-A Wisconsin from ACL Brewers Gold - RHP Victor Castaneda activated from AA Biloxi's 7-day injured list - RHP Harold Chirino activated from AA Biloxi's 7-day injured list - OF Tristen Lutz placed on AA Biloxi's 7-day injured list - C Brent Diaz placed on AA Biloxi's 7-day injured list - OF Micah Bello placed on High-A Wisconsin's 7-day injured list - RHP Trevor Gott sent on rehab assignment to High-A Wisconsin - 3B Mike Brosseau sent on rehab assignment to High-A Wisconsin *** Nashville Pre-Game Media Notes Final: Nashville 4, Gwinnett (Braves) 1 Box Score / Game Log Via the Sounds' site, game details, and we encourage readers to review each of the affiliate write-ups as part of their Link Report routine: Sounds Top Stripers to Begin Homestand - Josh Lindblom tosses six shutout innings in win No video for Mario Feliciano's first home run of the season. We won't be getting any video from the Down East home games this week, which is unfortunate. The Mudcats are the lone full-season affiliate on the road currently. Brewers brass couldn't have asked for more in terms of getting the young Muddies pressure-packed pennant chase experience, well, except for getting a win here. *** Final: ACL D-Backs Black 12, ACL Brewers Blue 1, seven innings as scheduled Box Score / Game Log Admit it, you saw the final score and immediately pounced on the "black-and-blue" association. Ouch! Now I'm starting to think the extreme heat is leading to all these seven-inning games, rather than the availability of arms on these split-squads. Pitch counts not listed here, but 19-year-old Venezuelan RHP Jesus Rivero did not last the first inning. He's finding his first stateside season rough going. Three lonely singles, two errors (miscues did not lead to unearned runs), Blue's only run scored on a passed ball, but regardless, nurse the bruises on Wednesday's off day. Blue now 3-9 on the season. *** Final: ACL Mariners 11, ACL Brewers Gold 0, seven innings as scheduled Box Score / Game Log Yikes, what happened in Arizona Tuesday? The Golden Boys normally fare better, now 7-5 on the season. What were we saying about lonely singles? Four of them here. 20-year-old Dominican RHP Yerlin Rodriguez appears as though he could have used time in the DSL, either last year or this. UPDATE: For even more on Arizona Complex League action, check out the post in our Minor League Forum here. *** To wrap up, I again turn things over to my buddy @damuelle for the Dominican details. Final: DSL Baltimore Black 5, DSL Brewers1 2 Box Score / Game Log The Brewers1 squad actually led most of this game, as all the Baltimore Black damage took place in a five-run sixth inning. The loss dropped the team’s record to 3-9. 18-year old starting LHP Osbriel Mogollon pitched three scoreless, hitless innings, striking out four batters and issuing two walks. His ERA remains 0.00 through three appearances on the season (six innings, nine Ks). Throughout the organization, catchers are hitting surprisingly well and this is no different for our DSL clubs. Here, 17-year old left-handed hitting C Roman La Torre (OPS of .931 in 15 plate appearances) hit an RBI double in the second inning to give the Brewers1 team a 1-0 lead. La Torre also threw out an attempted base stealer in the top half of the inning. Neither team had any hits from the third through fifth innings, as drama built in the one-run contest planned for just seven innings. However, Baltimore Black got to the Brewers1 relief core in the sixth inning, scoring five runs on four hits and a hit batsman, the last such hit being a two-run homer. Generating just two hits in any game will not get the job done, but we’ll still note that it was 18-year old switch-hitting 1B Arnys Rodriguez (.931 OPS in 27 plate appearances) who collected that second hit with two outs in the final inning to cut the deficit to 5-2. Exciting DH/OF Luis Lara continued his mini-slump (0-for-last-10; 1-for-last-14), but still sports an OPS of .966 through 51 plate appearances. Better luck Wednesday, young men (when you face off against your DSL Brewers counterparts!) *** Final: DSL Brewers2 8, DSL Texas Red 7 Box Score / Game Log The Brewers2 squad came out on top of this high-scoring, see-saw, nine-inning contest, taking leads in the first, fifth, seventh and eighth innings, before holding off the Texas Red team for the final six outs. The victory raised Brewers2’s record to 5-7. Major contributions were received from: 18-year old left-handed hitting 1B Yeison Perez (3-for-5, 2 doubles, 2 RBIs) - 1.392 season OPS in 43 plate appearances 18-year old left-handed hitting RF Irving Igualas (4-for-5, 1 RBI, 1 SB) - 1.005 season OPS in 25 plate appearances 18-year old DH/C Brayan Oropeza (2-for-3, 2 walks, 2 RBIs) - 1.825 season OPS in 14 plate appearances Starting 18-year old LHP Anfernny Reyes (4 2/3 innings, 3 R (0 ER), 6 H, 1 BB, 2 WPs, 2 Ks) - 0.00 season ERA in 13 1/3 innings Winning 19-year old RHP pitcher Hamlet Vasquez (3 IP, 1 R, 3 H, 1 BB, 1 WP, 4 Ks) - 2.08 season ERA in 4 1/3 innings. Brewers2 opened the scoring in the top of the first inning, with SS Demetrio Nadal walking and coming home on a LF Jose Gonzalez sacrifice fly. Texas Red answered back with two unearned runs in the second inning, aided by an infield hit and an error. But the defense behind starter Reyes wasn’t all bad, as three Texas Red singles in the third inning yielded no runs, thanks to a LF Gonzalez-3B Juan Baez-C Eric Martinez relay to nab a runner at home. Brewers2 grabbed its second lead of the game in the fifth inning, courtesy of Perez providing an RBI single, then scoring on a ground out for a 3-2 lead. Reyes exited after retiring the first two batters of the fifth inning, but Texas Red then tied it back up via an error and a balk. The game remained 3-3 until the top of the seventh inning, when a Perez RBI double scored Baez (who’d singled - .923 season OPS in 52 plate appearances), then Igualas singled home Perez for a 5-3 lead. Of course, this lead didn’t lead last, as Texas Red responded with four runs in the bottom half of the seventh inning for a 7-5 advantage. The entertainment continued in the top of the eighth inning, with Brewers2 plating three runs for an 8-7 lead that would hold up until the end. All the action came with two outs, as Perez doubled and scored on a wild pitch, then Oropeza singled home two runs to score Gonzalez (who’d walked) and Martinez (who’d been hit by a pitch). Hamlet Vasquez did give up three hits and a walk in his three innings of work, but only conceded one run in earning the victory. He struck out the final two batters in a three-up, three-down ninth inning. *** On Wednesday, it's all evening action for the four full-season clubs. We'll be rooting on Carolina to hold on to their slim lead in the division. As of press time, we are scheduled to welcome back @Julio Muchachoto be your Link Report guide for the night, we're sure he'll bring back his eternal optimism and enthusiasm for all things Crew prospects after some well-earned time off. Enthusiastic and passionate about his craft, I found it to be very eye-opening regarding the sheer volume of effort the Brewers, and in this case, Althoff, puts in. *** Biloxi Pre-Game Media Notes via the Shuckers' Virtual Press Box Final: Biloxi 5, Pensacola (Marlins) 3 Box Score / Game Log Via the Shuckers' site, game details, please review: Zavolas' Quality Start Helps Shuckers to Series-Opening Win - Reetz Sets New Career High With 14th Home Run Be sure you read that game summary, so much video within! Brewers Minor League Link Report (6/20): Complex League Action
Jim Goulart posted an article in Minor Leagues
Transaction: C Jesus Garcia assigned to Low-A Carolina from ACL Brewers Blue *** Arizona Complex Leage recaps via @damuelle. On this particular night, Daniel spotlights the ages of nearly every player mentioned, as a reminder of just how many teenagers are at the complex. I'll have your Dominican recaps below. Final: ACL Brewers Blue 7, ACL Giants Orange 0 Box Score / Game Log This seven-inning game was the RHP Alexander Vallecillo show, as the 19-year-old dominated with his best start of 2022 thus far – 5 2/3 scoreless innings of four-hit, zero-walk (stunning), seven-K baseball. The Blue team improved their record to 3-8. Offensively, 18-year-old 2021 international bonus man SS Daniel Guilarte and 19-year-old 2021 draftee CF Jace Avina led the 12-hit charge by combining to go 5-for-8 with four doubles and four RBIs, thus raising their impressive early season OPS’ to .937 and .904 respectively. The Blue’s 19-year-old left-handed hitting 1B Quinton Low knocked in the first run of the game in the second inning, driving home 20-year old Eduarqui Fernandez (who’d doubled) in the second inning. The good guys then doubled their advantage in the third inning on consecutive doubles by Guilarte and Avina. The flood gates opened with a five-run fourth inning, with all runs scoring with two outs: 19-year old Jamal Zalm RBI single, infield error for a run, Guilarte RBI single, Avina two-RBI double. On the mound, Vallecillo was never out of rhythm, as the Giants Orange team never managed to put two men on base in any inning and only had one runner reach second base over his 5 2/3 innings of terrific work. Let’s also tip our caps to 19-year-old reliever LHP Junior Castillo for closing out the shutout by throwing 1 1/3 innings of hitless ball and 18-year-old 2B Jonatan Guzman going 3-for-4 and scoring a run. The staff was aided by 20-year old C Jhonnys Cabrera throwing out an attempted base stealer in the second inning, ground ball double plays in the fifth and seventh innings and zero Blue team errors in the game. Wait, no errors, no hit batsmen, no wild pitches, no passed balls and only one walk? What is this, AAA ball?? Great job, young men. *** Final: ACL Brewers Dodgers 5, ACL Brewers Gold 2 Box Score / Game Log The Brewers Gold squad couldn’t generate enough offense against the Dodgers in this nine-inning contest, though the pitching was solid. The loss dropped the Gold team’s record to 7-4. Starting 20-year old RHP Domingo Mejia took the loss despite a solid effort – six innings pitched, three runs, six hits, one walk, four Ks. After falling behind 2-0 through two innings, the Gold team battled back with 19-year old 1B Jesus Parra singling and scoring in the second inning and 19-year old CF Diego Larez being hit by a pitch, moving to third on an error and scoring on a double play ground out in the third inning. 2-2 game through three innings. Unfortunately, the team couldn’t generate much offense the rest of the way, with their best chances coming and going as follows: Down 4-2 in the seventh inning, 19-year old C Blayberg Diaz led off with a single, 19-year old LF Eduarh Colina walked with 2 outs, but nothing came of it Down 5-2 in the ninth inning, 20-year old 2021 draftee 3B Kaylan Nicasia and 19-year old DH/INF Jose Caballero each singled with one out, but a ground ball double play ended the game The only Gold player with multiple hits was Diaz (2-for-4) and the only RBI came via Mr. Caballero. Usual offensive bright spots 18-year old RF Luis Castillo (1.287 OPS) and 18-year old 2B Jadher Areinamo (.275 AVG) combined to go 0-for-6, but did manage two walks. Castillo also gunned down a runner at third base in the first inning. *** Final: DSL Colorado 1, DSL Brewers #1 Squad 0, seven innings Box Score / Game Log The Rockies' island kids scored their lone run in the 5th on a sacrifice fly. Considering the inning began with back-to-back singles, the damage could have been worse. The Cerveceritos only managed three singles, three walks, and that was the extent of their baserunners, as the Colorado team played clean defense. Their was only one at-bat with a runner in scoring position. It was a surprise that RHP Kevin Briceno was not brought to Maryvale to begin the 2022 season. because the Venezuelan's 2021 work was strong. Briceno won't be 20 years old until October, and don't you know, he's posting wonderful peripheral marks again thus far, as evidenced at his MiLB Player Page. In relief here, 18-year-old Dominican RHP Jesael Cabrera's rookie season is off to a similarly nice start after three outings. *** Final: DSL Phillies Red 10, DSL Brewers #2 Squad 5 Box Score / Game Log Up 3-1 after five innings after the very best of the three rookie outings of 18-year-old Dominican RHP Daurys Mora's season thus far, Club #2 saw five Philly runs cross in the top of the 6th, thanks primarily to the eight wild pitches thrown by 18-year-old Dominican RHP Franddy De Los Santos. In two appearances, De Los Santos has retired three batters while throwing eleven wild pitches. Place that in the "I can't believe what I just typed" category. The Crew responded to get back to within one run at 6-5 in the bottom of the inning when the runaway early candidate for Most Improved Player, corner outfielder/first baseman Yeison Perez, clubbed his 5th (!) home run of the season, a two-run shot. The LH bat now sports a ridiculous line of .371/.421/.943 (OPS 1.364) after 35 at-bats. Through ten games, 17-year-old switch-hitting Dominican center fielder Reminton Batista is 7-for-8 in stolen base attempts.-

As usual given MiLB's new scheduling established in 2021, the full-season affiliates enjoyed Monday off, with the clubs at the top three levels all returning to home base. My Link Report cohorts Joseph and Daniel (co-Rookie of the Year Awards for them, by the way) have taken a bottom-to-top approach this season in that their reports have kicked off from Class A Carolina and worked their way up to AAA Nashville. I will have to re-think my more traditional approach because the 2022 Mudcats have been great fun from the start given their energetic youth and exciting moments. Saturday's doubleheader sweep did not clinch a first-half playoff spot, not at all (one game lead over two other clubs with four games to play), but it put the exclamation point that included Brandon Woodruff's promising K-fest rehab start, Biloxi winning in a rout, and the formal end of the Timber Rattler first-half playoff hopes. All that being said, here's another "traditional" top-to-bottom review. Transactions: - CF Jonathan Davis' contract selected (congrats!) by MLB Brewers from AAA Nashville (replacing CF Lorenzo Cain, who was designated for assignment in what Cain described as a mutual decision after reaching ten years' MLB service time) - RHP Brandon Woodruff sent to AAA Nashville on rehab assignment Earlier this week it was noted that Nashville RHP Thomas Jankins retired (MiLB Player Page). This occurred exactly one week after he had been placed on the Sounds' IL - unclear whether this was for an actual injury or a roster-juggling paper move. Regardless, Daniel posted a Jankins career summary and best wishes post. Hope things go well post-baseball for my fellow Bay State native. *** Nashville Pre-Game Media Notes Final: Nashville 5, Memphis (Cardinals) 3 Box Score / Game Log Via the Sounds' site, game details, and we encourage readers to review each of the affiliate write-ups as part of their Link Report routine: Sounds Power Past Redbirds - Quartet of Nashville Pitchers Records Fifteen Strikeouts We see that first home run of the year, Brian Navarreto, plus Tyler White, your OPS nudging over .800 with a blast of your own, but clearly for the organization, this game was all about Big Woody, and it appears things went well. Brewers still getting Brice Turang center field starts at least once a week. Three straight games off for OF Abraham Almonte and his .888 OPS, perhaps something to monitor there. Shoutout to catcher Nick Kahle, with one lone at-bat since his placement in Nashville May 24th. Important note: While Jason Alexander was with Nashville, it was known as the Penske File. *** Biloxi Pre-Game Media Notes via the Shuckers' Virtual Press Box Final: Biloxi 15, Chattanooga (Reds) 3 Box Score / Game Log Via the Shuckers' site, game details, please review: Eight-Run First Sets the Tone In Shuckers' 15-3 Victory - Shook Strikes Out Seven In Six Frames For Biloxi Oh hello, first baseman Pedro Severino and your four singles. Thread - Sal Frelick riding an eight-game hit streak, ten-of-eleven games, and multiple-hit efforts in eight of those. Hie is 20-for-53 (.377) in that stretch, five XBH's, four BB's, ten K's). Meanwhile Garrett Mitchell continues to nurse a strained oblique, having last played back on May 13th. I'm assuming starting pitcher TJ Shook is a "Junior", because his given name is Franklin Todd Shook. Upon his promotion from Wisconsin, where he excelled to begin the season, Shook tossed three scoreless innings in a get-acquainted Biloxi debut, but it had been a bit of a struggle since, not terrible mind you, but this outing hopefully sets the tone for the reminder of the season. Forgive the camera work on this road game, Joey Wiemer, wonderful night for you, three hits and a walk. Tristen Lutz is having a quietly fantastic "remember me?" extended stretch of play. Similar to all the Brewers' "Zach's and Zack's", it pains me that because of the Timber Rattlers' also-talented outfielder Tristan Peters, I need to confirm the spelling of their names each time out. *** Wisconsin Pre-Game Media Notes via their all-encompassing Virtual Press Box Final: Great Lakes (Dodgers) 8, Wisconsin 6 Box Score / Game Log Via the Timber Rattlers' site, game details, please review: Loss Knocks Rattlers Out of Playoff Picture - Cartaya breaks tie with two-out, two-run double in eighth inning As we noted yesterday and Chris Mehring mentions in his game recap, RHP James Meeker with his first pro start, including his independent league days. Meeker threw strikes and was solid enough in his three innings of work. Second baseman Tyler Black's left-handed bat is really good, folks. On base four times here, now at .294/.417/.466 (.883 OPS for those mathematically challenged). Joe Gray's legs are fine even if other parts of his game are still developing - 11-for-11 in stolen base attempts in 2022, 43-for-48 as a pro. *** Carolina Pre-Doubleheader Media Notes Final, Game One: Carolina 8, Columbia (Royals) 7 Box Score / Game Log Final, Game One: Carolina 7, Columbia 3 Box Score / Game Log Via the Mudcats' site, details, please review: First Place Mudcats Slug Out Doubleheader Sweep - The Mudcats hit four home runs in game 1 and three in game 2 while sweeping Saturday’s doubleheader Yee-hah! OK, hope it was a heck of a post-twinbill celebration, but yikes, check out the standings with four games left in the first half. Down 5-4 to begin the top of the final inning, it was groundout-walk-flyout before Jackson Chourio lined an opposite field single to right. Then, on a 1-0 count, Jeferson Quero snatched the deficit and deposited it in the left field seats, my goodness. The only thing that could have been better about Carolina's day would have been if it had been in Zebulon. As it is, the Mudcats made things convenient with the two best sports minutes you'll spend this morning. I understand it's so easy to get caught up in the moment and be hyperbolic, but take a look at the top four in that Game One scorecard and tell me it's very reasonable that those four names will be in a big-league Crew starting lineup in five years or less. On to Game Two, and well-well, that OPS has snuck back over the 1.000 mark - We're a little video-heavy today, but why the heck not? Still can't get past how physically solid Eduardo Garcia appears - 3as long as we're going over the top this morning, a Carlos Correa vibe, anyone? Thank you to RHP's Miguel Segura and Jeferson Figueroa for allowing us to sweat less in this game. *** Final: ACL Brewers Blue 10, ACL Brewers Gold 2, seven innings as scheduled Box Score / Game Log Brewers management can be pleased in that five of the seven pitchers here fared reasonably well to very well. For the sake of time this morning, I'll borrow from Daniel's post in our Minor League Forum - The ACL clubs played a friendly seven-inning contest, with solid starting pitching (combined eight innings, one run, five hits, eight Ks for RHPs Arielbi Gonzalez and Henrison Mota) before OF Eduarqui Fernandez's show: grand slam, double, 6 RBIs, also threw out a runner at home. The game included stateside debuts for INF Miguel Briceno, C Darlin Lora and RHP Michael Perdomo (who earned the win), as well as INF/OF Kaylan Nicasia's (16th round draft pick last year) first home run as a Brewer Let's not forget that 20-year-old Dominican outfielder Eduarqui Fernandez, a right-handed bat, was a very prominent signing in July of 2018, $1.1 million. He has shown both significant pop and effective speed, along with the ability to cover at least some time in center (MiLB.com Player Page), but strikeouts have been a major issue. *** Final: DSL Brewers #2 Squad 7, DSL Phillies White 6 Box Score / Game Log Had to double-check the game log to make sure this one was scheduled for nine, as the game was tied at five after seven innings - no ghost runners were deployed. Crew #2 walks it off on a Philly error - I see that organization's defensive issues run deep! 17-year-old Venezuelan LHP Daniel Flores' first pro start (2nd appearance) was very good - 5 IP, 1 ER, 1 BB, 1 WP, 1 HBP, 6 K's. Brewers went heavy on LHP's in the most recent international class after a big drought in that regard. Home run #4 (!) in 31 at-bats for 18-year-old lefty-swinging first baseman Yeison Perez, now slugging .903. Wowza! Our 16-year-old friend, shortstop Juan Baez, with two doubles and a 1.027 OPS though 37 at-bats. Wowza again! Small samples be damned... *** Final: DSL Brewers #1 Squad 10, DSL Tigers #1 Squad 6, 11 innings Box Score / Game Log This was a wild one. Tigers tied the game at 5-5 with a single run in the bottom of the 9th when the inning began walk-HBP-walk. Remarkably, Crew #1 avoided the walkoff loss by inducing a couple of pop-outs within the mini-chaos. Both teams had a ghost runner thrown out at home in the scoreless 10th inning. The Tigers made the egregious decision as their man was tagged as the first out, Brewers play ended their half-inning. A five-run Crew 11th was punctuated by a bases-clearing three-RBI double by 17-year-old Venezuelan shortstop Angel Pereira. Every Brewer fanned at least once and six did multiple times, for a total of 18. Brewer runners stole four bases and were eliminated four times also, Brewer fielders committed three errors. Growing pains galore, but a fun win for the 3-7 team. *** Carolina's 4:05 Central gametime is the latest on Sunday. Rookie-ballers off on Sunday, as usual. On this Father's Day, we leave you with Curt Hogg's fantastic Journal-Sentinel piece on the Brewers' farmhand development success story, Peter Strzelecki. Also, BrewerFanatic's Sean Franken penned a moving Father's Day piece, currently featured at our site. I hope your own Sunday is wonderful, until next time... The Mudcats game recap via the Carolina site includes the headline "First Place Mudcats". Though it's a razor-thin half-game lead, that's still very pleasant news. We'll often let the full-season clubs break down much of the game action minutia within their team site summaries and tweets, but we have no such luxury at the rookie complex levels. If there is another organization's fan-site providing as much detail on the rookie level as BrewerFanatic, well, we'd be surprised. So settle in not only for the news about the players close to impacting the big-league Crew, but stay informed along with us on the 2027 and beyond Milwaukee Brewers you're also getting to know now. Transactions: - RHP Jandel Gustave sent to AAA Nashville on rehab assignment - C Pedro Severino sent to AA Biloxi on rehab assignment - OF Corey Ray outrighted to AAA Nashville - RHP Michael Perdomo promoted from DSL Brewers-1 to ACL Brewers Blue - RHP Anthony Perez promoted from DSL Brewers-1 to ACL Brewers Blue - INF Jamal Zalm promoted from DSL Brewers-2 to ACL Brewers Blue - C Darlin Lora promoted from DSL Brewers-1 to ACL Brewers Blue - INF Miguel Briceno promoted from DSL Brewers-1 to ACL Brewers Gold The first round of the 2016 MLB draft has proven to pretty much have been a dumpster fire. Oh sure, Braves RHP Ian Anderson (taken two picks before Corey Ray at #3 overall) and Wisconsin native Gavin Lux are definitely big league contributors. Guardians RHP Cal Quantrill at #8 would have been a solid choice. But true 1st round superstar power - nothing quite yet. That doesn't make the injury-filled and performance-lacking Brewers career of Ray any less disappointing, and now Ray is set to meekly slide away into minor league free agency after this season. But you do know the Brewers success story from that round, right? Sure you do, he's 25th overall pick Eric Lauer! There's a pick-us-up note! *** Nashville Pre-Game Media Notes Final: Nashville 4, Memphis (Cardinals) 1 Box Score / Game Log Via the Sounds' site, game details, and we encourage readers to review each of the affiliate write-ups as part of their Link Report routine: Boushley, Sounds Stifle Redbirds - Nashville Never Trails as Series Evens in Memphis One of the best parts about Caleb Boushley's Minor League Rule 5 Phase pickup from the Padres system last December is that Milwaukee has another year of control over Boushley. So even if he's not added to the 40-man or 26-man rosters, he could play an important role in 2023. Just think how fortunate, as MLB only decided to conduct the minor league phase due to the lockout. No Boushley if they hadn't held it! While reminding us he grew up a big Cardinals' fan, Small naturally expresses his appreciation for his Memphis-area upbringing. Guess he wanted to get out and experience the local happenings, as he, along with Manager Rick Sweet, were ejected from the dugout in the 3rd inning after Jon Singleton was called out on strikes. Not sure if RH reliever Matt Hardy, in his 6th season in the Crew's system, still has to deal with wrestler Matt Hardy shoutouts wherever he goes, but he's having a super-solid season. Encouraging rehab outing for RH reliever Jandel Gustave. Too bad for the Sounds' faithful home fans that Brandon Woodruff's scheduled rehab outing Saturday is in Memphis. *** Biloxi Pre-Game Media Notes via the Shuckers' Virtual Press Box Final: Biloxi 6, Chattanooga (Reds) 5 Box Score / Game Log Via the Shuckers' site, game details, please review: Biloxi Holds On For 6-5 Win Over Lookouts - Bennett Allows Just One Run Over Five Frames You'll find a Chattanooga TV sports report on the contest here. Worth copying here to end it, with Voice of The Shuckers Garrett Greene on the call: Wiemer's offensive mini-slide continued with an 0-for-5 evening (one run, one RBI), but even with a tough camera angle, that was a sweet defensive play. Big games from the bottom four in the order - Cam Devanney, Noah Campbell, Gabe Holt, and Yeison Coca. How much of a luxury is it to see the #6 and 7 hitters (Devanney, Campbell) with OPS marks of ,860 and .861 respectively. Don't know if Southern League pitching is down this year, but nearly night in and night out, this is not the offense-suppressing AA environment we've become accustomed to while tracking Brewer farmhands at the plate or on the mound in years past. Nice start for LHP Nick Bennett, upping his game recently. *** Wisconsin Pre-Game Media Notes via their all-encompassing Virtual Press Box Final: Great Lakes (Dodgers) 3, Wisconsin 0 Box Score / Game Log Via the Timber Rattlers' site, game details, please review: Loons Shut Out Rattlers 3-0 - Jarvis strikes out eleven, but offense held to two hits T-Rats on the brink of first-half playoff elimination, give us a heck of a 2nd half, men. Just six men on base (two singles, four walks, 14 strikeouts) and 0-for-2 with RISP for Wisconsin. Final lines show seven hitting .213 or below, and you can only statistically pooh-pooh batting average so much. Seven of RHP Justin Jarvis' last eight starts have been very good to outstanding. His 2022 game log shows how he bounced back from a frigid April performance. Hey, did you miss Adam McCalvy and Brad Ford's extended conversation with catcher Alex Hall earlier this week? Good stuff beyond what you may have heard whilst Hall was up for his one-game (so far) big league dugout debut. Check it out here at the 49:00 minute mark. Listed at 6'2", 160 on his MiLB Player Page (but we know how outdated those vitals can be), the prized shortstop prospect Garcia looks to be all of that and more with this swing - How confident is the organization in Garcia's defensive prowess in the six-hole? All but one of 503 professional defensive innings have been at shortstop. Are the six walks in 224 at-bats in 2022, in a word, awful? Yeah, that one aspect of Garcia's game needs a ton of work. The rest - just fine, thank you. Just 20 years old all season, RHP and 2021 6th round JUCO pick Carlos Rodriguez continues to justify his fairly lofty draft status. Half-game lead with six games to go in the first half? You'll realize how critical those six games are when you review this from Voice of the Mudcats' Greg Young Jr.'s always-robust media notes: PLAYOFF DROUGHT: The Mudcats failed to reach the playoffs in 2021, thus stretching the club's playoff drought to a Minor League Baseball worst 12 consecutive seasons. The Mudcats last reached the postseason in 2008 where they lost to the Mississippi Braves in the Southern League Championship Series (when they were associated with the then-Florida Marlins at the AA level). Let's get the Zebulon faithful some playoff baseball, guys! *** My thanks to @damuelle of our staff who contributed the Arizona Complex League write-ups for me. With the four complex leagues active, daily report duties can be daunting, so you'll see the occasional tag-team. I'll rejoin you below for the Dominican games ? Final: ACL Athletics 7, ACL Brewers Blue 5, seven innings as scheduled Box Score / Game Log Brewers Blue vs. Athletics was a repeat of Thursday’s game, with unfortunately the same outcome, dropping the Blue squad to 1-8 thus far in 2022. Five DSL players were promoted stateside in advance of today’s ACL games, but only Jamal Zalm saw action. After playing all of his 246 2/3 innings in the infield in DSL, of course in his first-ever ACL game Zalm was sent to play left field. It was a successful debut for him, as he doubled and scored to tie the game 2-2 in the second inning, while the gods mercifully didn’t send any fly balls his way. However, the Athletics used a four-run 4thinning to blow open the 2-2 contest, then held off the Brewers Blue squad in this shortened seven-inning affair. After a solid debut 2021 season for 24-year old LHP Leoni De La Cruz (1.23 ERA, 1.02 WHIP, 12.0 K/9 in 29 1/3 innings split between DSL and ACL), he struggled for the second time in three games this year. Inheriting a two-on, one-out situation from starting RHP Andy Garcia in the fourth inning, De La Cruz allowed the first three Athletics he faced to reached base (single, two walks), thus ballooning the deficit from 3-2 to 6-2. 2021 big bonus 18-year old Venezuelan SS Daniel Guilarte (.786 OPS in 35 plate appearances, seven RBIs) continues his successful debut season, with his fifth inning, two-out single plating two runs to cut the Athletics’ lead to 6-4. The Brewers Blue and Athletic staffs struck out nine and ten batters, respectively, but the Blue team issued seven walks versus just one issued by the Athletics. However, those strikeouts are likely an encouraging sign that our pitchers have the “good stuff” (five for Garcia in 3 1/3 innings, two for De La Cruz in 1 2/3 innings, two for Raul Mendoza in two innings). The organization can’t reasonably expect 17-year catcher Felipe Valderrama to hit much at this level (unsurprising .414 OPS in 25 plate appearances), so should be happy that he threw out one of two attempted base stealers. Don’t be discouraged by 1B Quinton Low’s OPS of .425 (25 plate appearances), as his BABIP is just .182 and his BB/K ratio is 6/8. *** Final: ACL Brewers Gold 5, ACL Guardians 0 Box Score / Game Log The Gold squad continues to counter-balance Blue’s struggles, boosting their record to 7-2 in this reversal of fortune from Thursday’s loss to the same Guardians’ team. What a turnaround for 19-year old starting RHP Patricio Aquino from last week’s rough stateside debut, as he shut out the quality opposition (Guardians drop to 6-3) over six innings, striking out eight batters while only allowing a double, two singles and two walks. After a solid 2021 season (2.66 ERA in 44 DSL innings), Aquino is definitely a player to keep an eye on. The Gold team were unfortunately unable to capitalize on a bases loaded, one-out opportunity in the first inning, while Aquino then worked around a leadoff Guardians’ double in the second inning (two strikeouts and an infield pop up). We’re nine games into 2022 and we now simply expect greatness from 18-year old left-handed hitting OF Luis Castillo who went 3-for-5 with three RBIs to maintain his amazing OPS at 1.382 through 38 plate appearances. His RBI single in the third inning opened the scoring at 1-0, while his two-run double in the fourth inning provided the final margin of 5-0. Of course, Castillo’s BABIP (.519) and low season numbers for walks (3) and stolen bases (0) will raise some questions, but by the same token just six strikeouts tells you that Mr. Castillo has serious contact skills. 18-year old lead-off man 2B Jadher Areinamo continued his impressive work (1-for-4, two runs scored). Areinamo (.297 AVG / .395 OBP / .405 SLG in 43 ACL plate appearances) has hit safely in eight of the nine ACL games, walking twice in the other one. 19-year old Venezuelan RHP Yorman Galindez was the only 2022 international signee to be directly posted stateside (i.e., no games in the DSL) and the organization is not regretting that choice. With two scoreless innings in this contest, his ERA is now 1.04, WHIP 0.81 and he’s struck out 12 batters in his 8 2/3 innings. Well done, young man! To finish off the shutout, 24-year old RHP Ryan Middendorf had a successful debut in affiliated baseball, working around an infield error to pitch an otherwise clean ninth inning with one strikeout. The Brewers acquired Middendorf’s contract from the Schaumburg Boomers of the Frontier League earlier this week, where he threw 150 2/3 innings in 24 starts in 1 1/4 seasons (3.05 ERA, 1.15 WHIP, 7.8 K/9). 19-year old Jesus Parra continued his bounce back season (.774 OPS in 2019 DSL, .566 OPS in 2021 ACL, .840 OPS this year) with a 2-for-5 outing. I’m not sure if it was the 107-degree heat (on a partly cloudy day, no less), the Guardians’ struggles at the plate (despite 20 MPH winds blowing out to center field) or their three errors, but bench coach Dennis Malave was ejected by the home plate umpire Chad Lagana in the 8th inning. Get both of those men a cold beverage. Actually, this occurred after the Guardians bunted for the 2nd out with one runner on in the 8th inning. Bunting in ACL ball while down 5-0? Yeah, that might merit an ejection. *** Final: DSL NYY Bombers 12, DSL Brewers #1 Squad 2, seven innings, lightning Box Score / Game Log The Yankees organization has two DSL teams, with the other simply being the "Yankees". OK Brewers front office, we'll give you until next spring to come up with something better than DSL #1 & DSL #2. The #1 Brewers, now 2-7, came very close to being no-hit. Their one and only knock was a two-run home run by 18-year-old 2nd-year switch-hitting first baseman Arnys Rodriguez with one out in what Mother Nature determined would be the game's final inning. The Dominican native struggled in 2021 (.501 OPS, 94 at-bats) while seeing time at second and third base in addition to first. In five games early on, it's been first base only for Arnys, who had broken the seal on his career home runs with one last summer. Early team MVP CF Luis Lara was an uncharacteristic 0-for-3 with two K's and left the game after flying out in the 6th of the lopsided affair. Pretty sure we would have known if he had been struck by lightning. The four Brewer pitchers, all in their debut seasons, combined to walk 11 and throw two wild pitches. The starter was Nicaraguan RHP Ranwell Smith who won't even turn 17 until late August, With an 80-grade name like Ranwell Smith, if mound duties don't pan out, there surely will be opportunities as a big-league postseason baserunning specialist. *** Final: DSL Blue Jays 4, DSL Brewers #2 Squad 3, eight innings (scheduled for seven) Box Score / Game Log No weather issues here, game scheduled to end early, as ghost runners were utilized in the 8th. It'd be interesting to know what discussions take place between teams as perhaps they indicate limited pitcher availability as a reason not to play nine. The BrewCrew2 8th was ineffective and unlucky. 17-year-old bonus baby prospect Johan Barrios, DH'ing here and 0-for-4 for the day, flew out to right field, apparently too shallow to advance the runner. Catcher Eric Martinez lined out, but it was caught by the second baseman. A strikeout ended the frame. A single pitch ended the game, with a Blue Jay line-drive single off RHP Nelson Cuevas, saddling the 21-year-old Dominican native, a 2022 rarity in that he's in his third DSL season, with his third loss in four appearances. Of course, this particular run will show as unearned on his ledger. The three Crew pitchers combined to walk seven, throw three wild pitches, and hit a batter. When that combination of events is low, it's worth pointing out. Not low here, but mentioned anyway as a point of reference for better mound days ahead. BrewCrew2 tied it at 3-3 in the top of 7th when still-16-year-old third baseman Juan Baez was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded. Debunking the whole concept of needing base hits with RISP, Baez had driven in a run with a sacrifice fly earlier. So two RBI on an 0-for-2 day at the plate. *** Carolina's doubleheader in Columbia, South Carolina kicks off at 3:30 Central. All other full-season action is this evening. Despite the Mudcats double-dip, it's still only eight, and not nine games today, as the two Arizona rosters square off for bragging rights in Maryvale. Have a great Saturday! There are seven scheduled games remaining in the first-half seasons for the Brewers' three full-season clubs below the AAA level. Second-place Biloxi (27-30) won on Wednesday but remains on the very fringe of the have-hope world, standing 4.5 games back, six in the loss column. Second-place Wisconsin, despite a fine 34-24 record, dropped a game further back, and now is 3.5 games from the top spot. Carolina has been fortunate to be in a very balanced division with the top six teams all within three games of .500. The Mudcats (30-29) have caromed on a now five-game skid at the worst possible time, and sit in second place, albeit just one game out. AAA Nashville's playoff fortunes are based on their full-season exploits, but the Sounds' stellar 37-24 mark gives them only a 1.5 game lead over both the Guardians' and Cardinals' clubs. Time to examine Wednesday's 2-2 mark on the farm. Transactions: - RHP Justin Bullock activated from AA Biloxi's 7-day injured list - RHP Luis Contreras activated from AA Biloxi's 7-day injured list - RHP Trevor Tietz assigned to ACL Brewers Gold from ACL Brewers Blue - LHP Angel Perdomo transferred to AAA Nashville's 60-day injured list - LHP Clayton Andrews transferred to AAA Nashville's 60-day injured list The Brewers never did release specific injury information on Perdomo and Andrews, and given Perdomo's 40-man roster status, you'd think that we'd know more at this point. Should the Brewers be in a pinch for a 40-man roster spot, they could call Perdomo up to the big-league roster and place him on the 60-day IL, at which point Perdomo would be paid the pro-rated major league minimum. *** Nashville Pre-Game Media Notes Final: Nashville 8, Memphis (Cardinals) 4, ten innings Box Score / Game Log Via the Sounds' site, game details, and we encourage readers to review each of the affiliate write-ups as part of their Link Report routine: Sounds Outlast Redbirds in Extra Innings Lots of juicy details in that just-linked report. Unfortunately, not much in the way of juicy visuals for this road game. However, after reading about it, we're all curious to see the 8th-inning inside-the-park moment for the bad guys and burly Alec Burleson off a Lucas Erceg fastball - The game was in-effect a "winner is in first place" contest, so nice to see the Sounds reign supreme at the end of the evening. Doesn't it feel as though Brice Turang's OPS should be higher than .685? On base four times here, his line sits at .275/.324/.361. Josh Lindblom's $2.75 million salary for 2022 is a sunk cost for the Brewers, still no indication he's on the cusp of being re-added to the 40-man and 26-man rosters. After a three-start rough patch, this was an excellent showing, and on his 35th birthday to boot. Big, big Garrett Whitley home run leading off the 9th, clearly. *** Biloxi Pre-Game Media Notes via the Shuckers' Virtual Press Box Final: Biloxi 5, Chattanooga (Reds) 2 Box Score / Game Log Via the Shuckers' site, game details, please review: Pitching Dominates In Shuckers 5-2 Win Over Chattanooga In Wednesday Matinee - Devanney Homer Seals Biloxi Win The Biloxi staff plucked three video clips from the Chattanooga feed and they are included below (remember, all four full-season affiliates are on the road this week). I admit I was taken aback by the calls from the Voice of the Lookouts, so looked him up (pun intended). Larry Ward, the Lookouts' veteran voice - Chattanooga icon is longest-tenured Double-A broadcaster Respect for the distinguished long career, but those calls, whether featuring the opponent's success or not, would not sustain me for a full season. We're pretty blessed with our affiliate voices. Sal Frelick, Jakson Reetz and Gabe Holt enjoyed the midday affair resting in the dugout. Joey Wiemer has spoiled us, he's just 7-for-31 in June with ten K's (.701 OPS), and we need to remember he missed a week with a hand injury. His teammates picked up the slack here. The Biloxi bullpen has thankfully righted the ship in recent days. Their collective efforts for much of this season pretty much dashed first-half title hopes, though the Wednesday appearances by RHP's Robbie Hitt and Zach Vennaro were representative of their own solid work throughout 2022. *** Wisconsin Pre-Game Media Notes via their all-encompassing Virtual Press Box Final: Great Lakes (Dodgers) 5, Wisconsin 0 Box Score / Game Log Via the Timber Rattlers' site, game details, please review: Wisconsin Held to One Hit in 5-0 Loss - Great Lakes pitchers strike out sixteen to beat the Rattlers This is going to sound like the old-man, Link Report vet (guilty on both descriptions), but it used to be we'd see a 16-strikeout game, on either side of the ledger, and it'd merit multiple paragraphs on just the uniqueness of the performance. Now, we just are immune to it - "oh, 16 strikeouts". Incredible in some ways how pitching has evolved and several years into this cycle now, batters haven't been able to overcome performances and/or philosophies at the plate. Now, we link to this info at the very bottom of each report you read, perhaps you've taken advantage. But when you sort the strikeout column on the batting side, you'll see all four Brewers affiliates are smack-dab in the middle of their respective leagues. From a pitching perspective, the four staffs don't fare as well, not fanning as many as most of the staffs, but they're not buried at the very bottom of the rankings, either. So overall, in the perspective of the game at this time in this regard, despite the K numbers being jarring at times, Milwaukee affiliates are pretty representative of the sport, not shining, and hardly a disaster. Sortable league stat pages (hitting / pitching): Nashville Biloxi Wisconsin Carolina Coming up on two weeks since catcher Darrien Miller exited a game on June 3rd, yet to return to game action. *** Carolina Pre-Game Media Notes Final: Columbia (Royals) 2, Carolina 1 Box Score / Game Log Via the Mudcats' site, details, please review: Quero Homers as Mudcats Drop Fifth Straight - Israel Puello and Edwin Jimenez held the Fireflies to just four hits in the tough luck loss The Kansas City affiliate was just 16-41 entering this series, and the Mudcats have dropped the first two games. Opposite of good. Let's remind ourselves this is Jeferson Quero's age-19 season. His 1st inning error (6th of the season) didn't help but was offset by the blast above. Quero's .690 OPS is just fine given his age and the responsibility shouldered upon him for his first taste of full-season ball. I continue to look at this ultra-young Carolina roster and sense that several players would absolutely blossom and crush if given the chance to spend the first half of 2023 back in Carolina. But given the sheer roster numbers, I fear some may open with a similarly young-for-league team in Appleton to begin 2023, not sure if that'll be the best development path. Regardless, like Carolina staff this year, Timber Rattler employees had best brush up on their Spanish in preparation for the wave coming next season. (Yes, of course, hosting Latin players would not be completely new for the Wisconsin organization). My co-worker Daniel noted in our Minor League Forum's daily thread on the Mudcats woes in this game: 2-on, nobody out 1st inning - didn’t score Bases loaded, nobody out 7th inning - didn’t score 2-on, nobody out 9th inning - didn’t score Wow, I thought the shade of 2022 big-league Brewers yellow was bright, but those Columbia uniforms are LIT, and living up their Fireflies name. *** We are back to all-evening action Thursday for the full-season teams, and the rookie complex teams are back in action. I hope to at least assist Daniel with the Dominican recaps while he brings insights from the other six games to you. Until Friday morning then, take care and be safe on your Thirsty Thursday.
