  1. A true international draft, for the reasons already cited here, would not be feasible. The only practical solution would be forfeiture of draft picks by a team that signs an international player for more than $X. Signing more $25,000 Venezuelan kids doesn't give a team an unfair advantage, so it'd be easiest to just leave things alone for players paid less than a modest amount. A $40MM Japanese player, on the other hand, should cost you your first rounder just like a $40MM American FA would. I do think the hard slotting system would be fantastic, as poor teams would no longer let first round talent fall to rich teams in the 3rd round because they want too much. Teams would all take the best player available and the crappiest teams would get the best talent that year. I'll be really excited if this ends up happening, because it would bring a lot of balance to teams without the union no-no of a salary cap that'd result in another strike.
  2. Lopez has been a terrific acquisition, and with each double he hits, he becomes increasingly likely to reject arbitration and net us a draft pick.
  3. Next year, Harang would cost $12.5MM + his $2MM buyout. Hall makes $8.4MM + a $.5MM buyout. If no money changes hands, this would be akin to getting Harang for the rest of the season for about $1.4MM and then on a 1 year $5.6MM deal next year. If this can be swung, it beats Looper as a 1-year rotation plug.

  5. I just felt old when I looked at the Brewers' lineup and realized only 3 players are older than me (and one of them only by 2 months). What happened to ME being the kid, and not the players?
  6. You don't need to use the "poles" on an elliptical, I often use the stationary handles. I have an upper-end Schwinn model (great deal on craigslist), and it has held up very well.
  7. I'd love to throw him in the back of the rotation for league minimum if he's released. Dude's a little better than a 5 ERA playing in the AL and not in a pitcher's park, which makes him a step up from Suppan, as much as it hurts to admit that our rotation is so shaky that this guy could help.
  8. It's all gonna depend on his prognosis. No way do they buy him out if they think he's gonna pitch. If they think that, they also aren't going to trade him and that contract for less than a pretty nice return for them.
  9. Correct, you don't have to offer 80% of current salary to a guy in Kendall's situation. So, nate is correct that the Brewers can offer him whatever they want. However, they cannot just offer him next to nothing, and then he doesn't accept and they get a draft pick. If that were the case, EVERY SINGLE type A and B FA would be offered arbitration, as the team would take on zero risk - they just make a tiny arbitration offer and walk away when the player says no. Instead, once they say "yes", you're at the mercy of the results of an arbitration hearing if you can't reach a compromise before then. So there is a serious risk here that Kendall accepts and then is owed way more than he's worth to us. The contract would not be guaranteed, though, so you technically can release the player before opening day with 30-45 days severance/termination pay. In Kendall's case, that could be $600K or so. You'd better be pretty sure you wanna keep him before he's offered arbitration.
  10. If it were the same rate over two years, it'd be intriguing and maybe worth taking a shot at seeing if he can turn it around, but 4 years for a scuffling pitcher is just not a situation I'd wanna touch.
  11. As much as I hate this out of pure principle born out of my undying dislike for Vargas, you have to view this as this is a nearly-pointless no-risk garbage move that wouldn't get much attention if it didn't happen at the deadline and didn't involve Vargas. We gave up someone of very minimal value for someone of very minimal value. I'd be a lot more upset if we unloaded Gamel for a mediocre starter.
  12. but I've heard that acupuncture has worked wonders for people. I had acupuncture done once, and it didn't do a thing... However, I know a guy that had a completely wrecked back, and acupuncture was a magic bullet. The problem for them is that placebo acupuncture works just as well as "professional" acupuncture. I'd stick with treatments that work in demonstrable, well-understood, falsifiable ways instead of magical subluxations and chakras. If a medical treatment has had decades or centuries to be scientifically-validated and its practitioners and proponents have failed to prove an effect, it's best to not waste your money on it. Regarding home remedies for allergies, I use a sinus rinse bottle with kosher salt dissolved in warm water and it's great. Pretty much every doctor I've talked to about my allergies and sinus infections recommended it. However, it didn't work as well as switching from cigs to chaw.
  13. Hopefully it's an "anti-aging" doctor who can give him an undetectable "cure" for his condition.
  14. Car insurance bugs me. What a scam. All insurance is a scam. My homeowners' policy wouldn't cover a broken sewer line even after I had paid for additional plumbing coverage. I thought I was pretty smart for buying that coverage when the pipe broke (likely because of shifting soil/foundation), then the ugly truth hit me. The claims adjuster denied me, citing my policy "covers repair and replacement of plumbing components following an event that causes sudden and accidental discharge". Sounds like what I have, right? Apparently not. The claims adjuster says that's not what it covers. Well, it's right there in the language of the policy. I asked him for an example of what it WOULD cover, then. He couldn't answer me. I said "just give me a hypothetical scenario in which this policy would pay for plumbing repair". He wouldn't. I am switching carriers when my policy is up for renewal in 3 weeks. I guess that's why people call it "fire insurance" because that's all it has a greater than 5% chance of paying out on.
  15. My staff got all bent out of shape when one girl at work was diagnosed with influenza A (I guess the health dept no longer checks further for swine flu). Several came to the office freaking out and I dryly asked "ya pregnant or have a weak immune system?". When they said no I shrugged my shoulders and grunted. We've undoubtedly had employees with worse communicable illnesses before, but they got freaked out because this somehow became "the big one". I really hate hysteria and everyone trying to play the expert when making doomsday predictions.
  16. I have to follow games on Gameday because I'm out of state. Javier Vazquez has a stunned look in his in his pic, but I didn't notice until Braun homered off him. Then I thought of how awesome it would be if the headshots on gameday were like Mike Tyson's Punch Out shots between rounds, where they'd look really cocky at first but more and more disheveled as pitchers got bombed or hitters accumulated K's.
  17. I too bought my mower at Wal Mart. I think it was $209 and has a Honda motor, bagger, and oversized back wheel. It works great, and if it stops working, I sell it as a fixer-upper on craigslist for $50 and buy a new one.
  18. Gillespie had no future in Milwaukee. His ceiling, as mentioned, is similar to Catalanotto. It isn't hard to find those players. That said, why in the world did Arizona take him? I think you answered that later in your post: Mercedes has been productive this year, is still young, and IIRC, was pretty highly thought of when we signed him as a kid. Plus, AZ gets to dump a decent amount of salary tied to a player with little value to them because they obviously won't compete this year.
  19. So I guess we can infer from this that the current asking price for Davis is too high, or he would have been packaged with Lopez.
  20. I don't really care but there should be a DH no matter what. Absolutely, with pitching this good, and so many great hitters to choose from, this is the only time I really like the DH. It's a good way to make sure deserving hitters get an AB. I think HFA should be determined by the cumulative league records in interleague play This is also an idea I favor. When the "it counts" policy was introduced I laughed at the prospect of a Kansas City reliever striking out a hitter from the Pirates with the bases loaded to clinch home field for Boston over LA.
  21. Yep, I just saw like $10 off tickets at Kwik Trip when I was back in WI last week.
  22. I thought while watching the softball game after the HR derby that it'd be funny to have a HR derby for pitchers using those shorter fences.
  23. Awesome beards get my eyes all misty.
  24. Bass fishing, beer, PS3, and pseudoscience. JimH, you live(d) in a chinese-speaking country, right? I'm just curious how you're teaching your kid, because the lady friend and I want to teach any future children to speak japanese, but bilingual language acquisition can be tricky outside of an environment where both parents don't speak the 2nd language.
  25. To top it off, it's really not even funny. There are offensive things that make you think "that ain't right, but in a vacuum it's funny", not the case here. The plays on his last name and butts, yeah, I get that, and can think back to high school when that one would at least have made me chuckle.
