  1. Like sheethead said, the dude gets to live in San Francisco and make a crapload of money, I'd love to be so unlucky. I'd trade in my job in a heartbeat for one at a crappy organization in San Francisco that paid me 3 times what I get now (yeah, I know, he was limited by arbitration before).
  2. I applaud your courage, I'd try to debate someone's imaginary friend before having a discussion with Nancy Grace. Amy Poehler's impression of her is hilarious. http://www.jumpcut.com/view?id=7260BFEC91D011DB8CB35A856F9CC894
  3. PH Gabe Kapler, 8th inning on Wednesday. It will mark the brightest spot of his Brewers tenure, which won't be saying much.
  4. The very idea that Juan Pierre was a viable corner outfielder is just so stupid that the league should have denied their contract offer to Torre and told them they'd be suspended for a year unless they signed Dusty Baker, as only a complete freaking moron could think that makes sense. Yep, put the promising 26 year-old with two decent MLB seasons on the bench so you can start a crap hitter with a girl arm because he's fast. "Hey I know the solution guys, let's sit Braun and put Counsell in left!"
  5. Yeah, if you're anti-GWB, I think the proper thing is to applaud politely, but not enthusiastically. Or just sit there silently, implying your dissent by not cheering. You don't have to show feigned approval, but booing is dumb. It's a freakin' baseball game where he was throwing out the first pitch, go boo him at a speech if you don't like him.
  6. Didn't someone get a reply from the team that it was "slobber"?
  7. Considering we would have saved $900K on Vargas and $525K on Munson ($1.45M), Roberts would've cost $5.05M, which is still too much for a backup, but isn't as bad as his real salary. 2009 is a different story, though, as he'd be the full $6.5M at age 37. Unless SF were willing to pick up at about $4M+ over two years, I wouldn't be into this idea at all. That is, of course, assuming the minor leaguers weren't quality players, in which case taking on the salary wouldn't be as bad.
  8. I don't think I've ever cried during a movie. Movies for some reason can make me get goosebumps and make me happy, but they never make me feel sad enough to cry - odd that when they're sad I say "just a movie...", but when they're uplifting i pump my fist as if it were real. I guess that's why documentaries get me more caught up, even "Who Killed the Electric Car" had me feeling a bit emotional.
  9. The extended warranty thing is just nonsense. Don't you have documentation stating when your warranty begins and ends? You'd think the paperwork would clearly state something like "Jan 1, 2003-Dec 31, 2008", and not just "72 months". Whatever paperwork you have would probably be good to pass by the eyes of a lawyer.
  10. Milwaukee fans certainly have a propensity to boo, and I really hope that with success and accompanying media attention we don't get branded as fair weather malcontents. Too many of us have waited with the patience of Job through awful years and stuck by our team, it'd be a shame if we all got branded a bunch of immature jerks because the bandwagoners are boo birds. I think it's stupid to boo the home team unless they really perform poorly. If a pitcher is getting rocked and Ned doesn't pull him, go ahead and boo the decision. When a horrible error is committed, go ahead and boo the play, but just looking for an opportunity to boo, or booing the same player everytime is pretty classless. Sure, you paid for your seat, but so did I, and I'd prefer to not be distracted by a loud mouth who yells things only he thinks are amusing. People in the upper midwest at times seem to be obsessed with their "rights", and extrapolate basic rights to stupid conclusions. Yeah, I paid for my seats, but does that mean I should be able to turn around and bare my butt cheeks to Gary Sheffield? I have freedom of speech, but does that mean I can go around a playground cussing at little kids? Rights aren't unlimited, nor do they mean you can take them to extremes and get a free pass on being a total piece of crap just because your rights allow you to do so.
  11. What a sloppy crap game. WI has not been physical and banged it inside where they have the advantage. They look slow and confused.
  12. He has had exactly 200 at bats in the big leagues. I dont think any one here knows what he is capable of. besides if he gets into a slump, he can call the best hitting coach around But we've seen plenty in the minors, so there is solid indication of his ability. As for having access to his dad, sure it'll help, but it only gets you so far. I could spend a year under the tutelage of the ghost of Ted Williams and still emerge a .200 hitter...against 15 year-olds.
  13. If healthy, we win the first 2, 3-5 could go either way, with Hill likely a good bet to be better than Villy, and we dominate #6.
  14. Yeah, I watched Riddick Bowe vs Holyfield on ESPN today and I remembered the fight pretty clearly. Then I stopped and went "that was HOW long ago?".
  15. I thought mothership's response was especially interesting, although I'm not sure how much it would apply to pro sports (I mean, how many people show up at little league and college baseball games compared to MLB? The noise level is much, much different). With them it's typically faded in gradually by level of competition. It's similar to the old legend of the frog that won't jump out of water that slowly increases to boiling hot. In little league you have a dozen parents, then in high school you have a hundred or more, then maybe a couple thousand in college and the minors, then a big jump to tens of thousands in the pros. The noise is always there - it just increased in volume each step along the way. I don't know if the jump in noise level would have a huge effect on performance for baseball, though, as it often is not excessively loud during the actual performance, but rather upon seeing the result of the performance. During an AB, lots of MLB crowds are "that loud", but they roar after the ball has been hit when the noise doesn't really matter in terms of the stability of the performance. This may serve more as a reinforcing (or punishing) consequence than as a distraction during the performance. It may be that the size of the crowd is actually a bigger distraction than noise level as it is what is present during the performance. Golfers are probably habituated to crowd size, but have no practice performing when noise occurs during the performance of the skill. Though a frog won't really sit still in water until it boils, the research does show that organisms can habituate quite well to stimuli that are gradually increased in intensity/magnitude and react less than they would if the terminal stimulus were presented prior to the procedure of systematically fading in the stimulus. Back to the Megadeth example, I would read better if the music started at a barely-audible level and increased by 1/2db each day to 110db than if I were suddenly confronted with 110db of Megadeth.
  16. I know a couple of people who had the chocolate and simply hated it. The keys didn't always work well, and they had to send several back before getting one that worked.
  17. (probably the biggest) this is how golf has ALWAYS been. you grow up and learn to play the game with people being quiet when you are swinging. since a person's mind is trained from day one be concentrate on a swing that basically deals with no sound distractions, a cough, honk, bird chirp, camera click, a flash, a fart - any little distraction is magnified 100x because you are not accoustomed to it. I think that's spot-on. Pretty much any fluent performance which is not trained and practiced in the presence of distracting stimuli will fall apart when distractions are added to the environment (I've done some research in this area, but it didn't involve golf). Performance is always most fluent in conditions that are the most similar to the environment in which the response was trained and strengthened. It's the same reason most of use have trouble reading a book in a noisy environment. Had we been trained to read while Megadeth was playing in the background, we'd have much less trouble.
  18. Yeah, I'd like some action on the under as well.
  19. How to keep Parra at 170 innings or less Give him a bag of Sheet's used Q-tips.
  20. The Cubs will be tied for 3rd in wins in all of baseball? Yeah... Cincy is improved but isn't for real, and are managed by a moron. I'm pretty confident that Colorado ain't winning 89 games, unless maybe they have more games against SF than I thought.
  21. It made me really depressed to think that I went to college for 8 years and Claudio Vargas just made as much to pitch spring training as i will make between now and 2025 .
  22. but they were are able to deliver, especially at the end. Episode 3 is a great movie and on par with 4 and 6, IMO. I appreciate episode 1 in retrospect, but yeah, episode 2 sucked.
  23. To echo others, I'm now extremely pleased that we didn't trade away pitching depth like I so badly wanted to happen. Of course, I was totally open to trading Cappy, so that would have been a shrewd move in retrospect, but keeping both Vargas and Bush suddenly doesn't look quite as bad.
  24. I'm sure he'd never sign with us when others offer the same money and a starting shot, but if he fell to a little over a million, he'd be such a perfect fit it's insane. Having a guy with his skills on the bench after bridging the gap for the first 25 games would be a huge boost to this team, especially in the event of an injury to one of the regulars.
