  1. We now already have Claudio Vargas, so there's no need to get an average young starting pitcher with multiple years remaining.
  2. The downside to checking a guide or message board is that you loose that sense of accomplishment when you figure something out on your own. That's why I set a criterion of needing to be stuck for at least about a half hour on something before I can go to the net. Lunabean.com, FWIW, has a great free walkthrough. I love to figure the stuff out myself, but sometimes it just gets too frustrating and I have to go to the waljkthrough, otherwise I may still be stuck halfway to where I am now. The noise that shoots out of the controller when you get something can be very rewarding. Yeah, there's a very Pavlovian thing going on with that chime.
  3. Does anyone know of a good Wii site that gives you news on when updates will come out and how to use some of the features? I'm not sure on the whole SD card memory yet like what you can save to it. Spoiler: The snow temple was really a pleasure to play through. ***Semi-spoiler*** Are you using a guide or walkthrough? I'm a little over 30 hours in and just got to the part where you find the partial mirror. I've only used a walkthrough on parts that just made no sense, like when you needed to use an ability you didn't know you had (warping with the volcanic boulder).
  4. I'm probably about 4 hours in now. Freakin' sweet. I've got ya beat by almost 30 hours and can say that it simply gets better and better. The new weapons/tools make it really awesome. On the wireless front, I had to make my connection unsecured for whatever reason to get the Wii to connect. This is not a problem at the moment, as I live in the country where only the elderly couple next door may be in range of my wireless router. When I move though, I'll probably need either a new router that's more compatible or the $35 Wii adapter - no biggie.
  5. Finally got the Wii connected to wireless. I just had to go from WPA to WEP, and that did the trick. From what I hear, all routers will be a little different, but going with the most simple encryption gives you the best chance of making it work. Zelda: TP - great game or greatest game? I'm about 25 hours in and it has blown my mind.
  6. I will take a guy who watches every game of the season and doesn't know any stats opinion over a guy who only looks at numbers anyday Round 1: Bill James versus...Freeway!
  7. Since Kim is due $2.5m and Clark $3.8M, I wouldn't be upset with the deal at all if Kim is cool with coming out of the pen.
  8. Go after Bonds first. He'll be just as good at a lower cost with no need to trade anything. While his rate stats are still really good, there's no way you bet the farm on Bonds being healthy. Manny, meanwhile, is good for about 140 games a year.
  9. I now have a question for computer geeks. I got the Wii all set up and am having the time of my life. The problem is that I can't get the thing to connect to the internet. It detects the network and lets me enter to code, but the connection test always says that it failed to connect. Any help on this?
  10. I got it! My friend at Best Buy said they'd have 20 or so today. I showed up at 8:15 and was 22 in line - they had 27. I also scored Zelda. I may not be as active on the forum for awhilehttp://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/smile.gif
  11. He'll still just be 30 years old and is coming off a down year that looks bad because of how poorly he did in NY. If he could fly under the radar and be had for $8M over 2 years, I'd be very happy with that. It may be that he's looking to finally be inked in as a starter, though, after being constantly jerked around. With both Jenkins and Hart, I don't know if that's something Melvin can offer. He and Jenkins would make one heck of a platoon, though, and he provides great insurance for a rookie slump by Hart (who's still a rookie for all intents and purposes). Mench could then be traded for bullpen help or prospects.
  12. It may be worth it if there was considerable money saved, but Jones will be paid $4M next year and $5M in '08. Meanwhile, he posted his first OPS above .800 in 4 years last season. I'd rather gamble on Jenkins returning to form than Jones being above average. I don't even consider Jones to be an upgrade from Mench, who had solid track record until collapsing in Milwaukee last summer.
  13. I'd be down with it. Rivera did well last year, but he doesn't have the track record that Zaun does, so I'd be willing to see a higher payroll exchanged for some certainty that you'll get good production from the C position. My only concern is that he's only a year and a half younger than Miller, so a two year deal would be awesome while I could still live with three.
  14. Having an entire week off for Thanksgiving break and not being able to get a gosh-darn Nintendo Wii and not even having a friend who has one that I can go "visit". Gloating Democrats.. Because 1994 and the 12 years that followed was a time of unbelievable humility. I didn't get any phone calls (no land line), but I did somehow make my way onto the NRA e-mail list. I somehow got on the Minutemen's mailing list. They send me crazy stuff. "The to send them back to Mexico is now. Will you make freedom count?" I don't know how I got on the list, as I'm a grad student who works in education and used to work for a center that helped the children of Mexican immigrants.
  15. Figgins is a guy I'd like to see brought in simply because our list of alternatives is Gwynn and Gross - one of which is unproven and the other is probably best suited as your LH platoon super sub. Since he's locked in through 2008 at a total of 8.25M, he's not a huge risk. Still, I don't like the idea of giving up a starter for a guy with a .712 OPS last year. If they'd take a package including guys that don't leave big holes like Gwynn, Mench, Gross, Clark, Eveland, Sarfate, Jackson, and maybe Koskie I'd probably be fine with it. If he indeed is penciled in as their 3B starter, perhaps a healthy Koskie could be the centerpiece, as he's a better hitter with a cheap contract. We could then make 3B Hall's permanent position, and Move Braun to the OF with Hart and Figgins with Mench/Jenks/Gross/whoever playing until Braun's ready.
  16. I don't think the Brewers plan on him being amazing. I think a 4.4-4.6 ERA is what they would want from him as a rookie. That'd be cool with me. Last year the average ERA in the NL was 4.49. If your rookie # 5 starter can be league average that's pretty darn good actually.
  17. but Garcia will win you more games. Vazquez has been basically a .500 pitcher his whole career. I think it's more important that Garcia has a lower ERA in each of the past 3 years. Back when Vazquez was good, he played for the 'spos - not exactly a situation conducive to picking up a nice win total.
  18. A trade always depends upon the return. If someone wanted to shed a young, great player with a couple years left before free agency, you trade your top prospects. If you're in the hunt in July and see a guy that's the piece to push you over the top, you make the deal. However, there isn't likely to be a team right now in salary dumping mode with a great young player to trade, and deadline talk is irrelevant in November. All that said, I don't think anyone will offer the Brewers what they feel Gallardo is worth. Inman is much more likely to be offered in a trade since he's less advanced.
  19. Remember that Gagne is a Type A free agent... True, but he won't be offered arbitration, since it would mean that the Dodgers need to pay him a minimum of $8M for 2007. If he were tendered arbitration, he'd take it without thinking twice. Non-tendered players return zero compensation.
  20. That's simply too much cash to give up for a guy with one good season under his belt. To think they may get Danks or another solid prospect for him is crazy.
  21. Why should we care, I thought Carlos Lee isn't very good??? Depends on your definition of "very". If you're talking about the Vlad Guerrero type of player he's looking to be paid like, no he's not "very" good.
  22. i'll put my money on the 30+ guys who have been waiting in line for a couple days and are getting real anxious..I wouldn't want to make those guys mad. Yeah, it takes meth to stay up that long, and meth gives you +8 strength, +5 agility, +9 rage, and -10 charisma. I went to Best Buy today because they had season 1 of Robot Chicken and ATHF v4 for $14.99, so I asked them about the Wii. They said all of them were sold out immediately and that they "should have more before Christmas". Ugg. Still, I'm assuming that's just the company line so that people won't get mad when they don't have any in a week or two.
  23. They just got him from Det...do you think they're going to trade him? Especially for DD? It's not unlike Arizona trading for DeLaRosa and immediately flipping him. As was discussed when Sanchez was a rumored return for Lee, many have serious concerns about him - we're not talking about Gallardo here.
  24. And Davis being cut twice before means nothing to me. That just means two teams made poor personnel decisions by unwisely losing their patience with a good lefty arm. I always find it to be a bad way to evaluate players as well. The inverse would be to say that Darren Dreifort, Denny Neagle, Mo Vaughn, and Mike Hampton were not long ago considered such great and valuable players that they were given deals exceeding the GDP of any nation in Sub-Saharan Africa. Yeah, it means nothing but poor talent evaluation in many cases. We didn't give Mark Loretta much playing time because we had so many vastly-superior options. Once upon a time, the Twins non-tendered a fella named David Ortiz to avoid paying him the $1.25M he would earn the next year. He seemed to do okay, putting up mediocre seasons with two OPS's above 1.000 and nothing lower than .961. Those same Twins also traded a junk prospect for a guy his old team didn't even find worthy of protecting in the rule 5 draft in Johan Santana. To make a Wisconsin homer example, there was once a young QB dumped by the Falcons for a draft pick because he didn't fit into their long-term plans. Some Brett Favor guy. Teams make stupid decisions and some players bloom later in their careers than others. All that matters is recent performance and current ability.
  25. Possibly, but at some point you have to have one that is successful to actually justify the absurd amounts spent just to talk to the guy. The two 'exclusive' guys that I'm absolutely aware of in Ishii and Irabu were both colossal disappointments after being billed as top of the line, can't miss pitchers. So far to the best of my knowledge, it's only been a huge waste of money for the teams 'lucky' enough to win the bidding. I personally think it's a huge gamble and potentially stupid move to give the same money to any international player as you'd give to a top-flight MLB free agent. It's akin to promoting a stud AAA player, as some go on to be great MLB players while others are Kevin Barker, Billy Jor Robidoux etc. Japan is at least the safest international location or league to sign players from, as competition is pretty good, but you also pay way more that you'd likely pay for a Korean or Cuban player.
