We've had this discussion regarding Maryvale many times before around here. No, it's not a festering third world ghetto, but it isn't anywhere I'd feel comfortable walking around at night. You can tell it's an economically depressed area. When you drive out of the Maryvale parking lot, there's homeless people along the median begging for money, etc. There really isn't anything to do around the stadium, either. No real restaurants, etc. It's simply just not the best location for an MLB facility, and I don't think there's any real argument about it. Plus, while the park is decent, but pales in comparison to the amenities at the newer ballparks around the area. It's basically a bare bones ballpark, and that's it. I think my favorite when we visited a couple years ago was the new Dodgers/White Sox ballpark. Beautiful park, plenty of parking, wide seats (almost ridiculously so), and good shops and food. Not to go on a rant, but the food at Maryvale basically sucks compared to the offerings at the other parks. As far as stuff to do, if you're the adventurous type, there's the Apache Trail. I recommend having a solid vehicle and bringing plenty of water, though.
