  1. Cruz better get a legit shot in spring training.
  2. Thanks to Brew Crew Ball for linking to this Fangraphs article about end of year payrolls. Total end of year payroll for the Brewers was over $94.5 million, up more than 5% from the 2009 season.
  3. Yeah, I think we discussed that previously. I don't see how the Brewers could work out a trade like that financially at this point. It wouldn't make sense for the Dodgers to trade him and eat a large portion of his salary. Especially if we would (presumably) only be sending back a lower level prospect in return. I can't really see anyone on the MLB roster being dealt at this point.
  4. Well, I'm sure they have some good reasons for not doing so. Mainly lack of finances to properly fund such endeavors.
  5. Yeah, I agree. I'm guessing the Brewers kicked the tires on Fuentes, then went with Saito instead. I think any further moves Melvin makes will be through trades and not free agent signings.
  6. I would think you would be better served saving up and buying a used SUV. There must be tons out there available at affordable prices that aren't total beaters.
  7. The Brewers should be scouring Japan for pitchers like Saito, Okajima, Kawakami, and Uehara. I don't know. I think they are better served working on other markets as they are doing now. They can't compete with teams like the Mariners, Yankees, and Red Sox in Japan.
  8. Gomez would look so good batting 2nd if he could even get his OBP up just north of .300. Would be a huge advantage having him on the basepaths in front of Braun/Fielder/McGehee.
  9. Moyer won't be able to pitch this season due to having surgery recently (Tommy John, I think). They have guys they will be able to call up from AAA like Rivas and Dillard if needed. I'm really not that worried about this pitching situation right now.
  10. No offense, but the Cubs pulled out of the Webb "sweepstakes", if you can call that, awhile ago. Most in the org feels Webb won't pitch till July and IMO he won't be all that good. In fact I think there is a good chance that guys like Wells and Gorzy will have better 2011 then Webb. So.......there's that. Yeah, I don't get why people were talking like Webb would be able to make an immediate impact at the major league level. That's why I was really questioning why the Brewers should go after him, as some were suggesting.
  11. Yes, it does seem kind of surprising, like I alluded to earlier. It will be interesting to hear how exactly this deal came together.
  12. Peavey, you could be right...though I suspect a SS addition would be through a trade and not a FA signing.
  13. I have to think this signing also significantly reduces the chances of Capuano being re-signed by the Brewers.
  14. There probably was more of a view from Friday's but we weren't motivated to go there. Hmmm...if I hadn't met you previously, I would think you were actually Doug Melvin from this sentence.
  15. From reading commentary by others, it sounds like the key for Saito is that he can't pitch back to back days. Probably shouldn't go more than an inning at a time, either.
  16. He might be. Adam McCalvy just tweeted that the signing is a done deal and will be officially announced next week. Maybe a slight delay due to the holiday, or maybe Saito is traveling from Japan for a physical or press conference?
  17. They are definitely working on it. The "John and Cait...Plus Nine" blog had some pics of the work going on earlier this month.
  18. Yeah. I saw there was a bit of a debate on this on Twitter earlier, but you are correct. Losing a 2nd round draft pick would have been painful at this point.
  19. Something I was just thinking: This move seems a bit surprising. Milwaukee isn't usually known for attracting free agent Asian players, especially ones coming off good seasons. It's hard to think there wasn't a somewhat decent amount of interest in Saito. Maybe he was attracted to signing with the Brewers due to seeing a shot at the post-season? I'm just speculating on this.
  20. Another point about Saito: Last year he had the highest ERA of his MLB career at 2.83, but his WHIP was still just 1.074. So even if he regresses slightly this season, he should still be pretty good. He also had a SO/9 of 11.5, which seems very good.
  21. "Sye-toh". Seems a good relatively low risk move for the Brewers. Kind of nice to see them still spending money, but not going crazy.
  22. The way I look at it is that so much hinged on Trevor Hoffman last year, and when he failed at the start of the season, it really screwed things up. This year, while Axford is slotted in as the closer, they have other guys that could probably reliably slot in without majorly shaking things up.
  23. After their bad season last year and lack of major moves, I don't see how anyone could see them being more than a fourth place team at this point. The few Cubs fans I've talked to are pretty down on the team and the new ownership right now. Makes me appreciate Mark Attanasio even more.
  24. This line about Kenny Allison made me chuckle: His most notable offensive trait in the few months he spent at Maryvale was a Weeksian HBP rate, but his physical tools make him one to keep an eye on entering 2011. "Weeksian!"
  25. Had a great time yesterday, between a family Christmas get-together and the huge Packers win. Today I feel like I got run over by a truck due to the festivities. Couple that with not sleeping well and having to get up early to get the house ready for some window installers (yes, we found someone to install windows this time of year), and it's going to be a somewhat long day.
