  1. This is basically how I feel. I think the Reds will be in contention all season, but I just don't see the Cardinals having the horses to make it this year.
  2. Anyone know if Webb will be able to pitch by Opening Day?
  3. I was thinking it was _that_ one right away. Funny post, though.
  4. 90 wins only gives you a 54% chance of making the playoffs? That seems low to me. Or is this just general and not relating to the relative low level of competition in the NL Central?
  5. Tim, I like Furcal. He's a very good player. The problem is he is going to make $12 million in 2011, and also has a club option for the same amount in 2012 (apparently kicks in if he makes 600 PAs). I don't think the Brewers can afford that and I'm not sure we have another player we could send with a contract that could evenly partly even that out.
  6. Last year I predicted them to win 85 and they fell well short of that. My relatively unscientific approach to this: Seeing how much better the rotation should be this year, I am hesitantly looking at them as an 88 win team. I just think the rotation is going to be so much better than last year, and this should also help the bullpen. I think the offense and defense will be about the same.
  7. I saw someone mention on Twitter that he has a couple "plus" pitches, and if he puts everything together he could be a nice relief pitcher to have around.
  8. I think if I were Melvin, I would broach the subject on an extension with both starting pitchers, but I wouldn't be too pushy about it. You can at least open the door to it now, and then hope as time progresses, both become more amenable to the idea. Then if next off-season rolls around and neither has signed, I would get much more aggressive with the idea.
  9. If I'm not incorrect, there hasn't been a 25 game winner in MLB for 20 years (Bob Welch, 27-6, Oakland A's, 1990). So that seems a bit hyperbolic to me.
  10. Going off the Johnny Damon thread, I'm more convinced that the real position of need is shortstop. It doesn't sound like Betancourt is really going to cut it. I like Counsell, but it's one of those situations where you don't want him starting 50% of the time. I don't think there are a ton of free agency options for decent shortstops, though. It might be a situation where Melvin should explore trading for someone if he doesn't have to give up much.
  11. I would definitely think Melvin is at least going to test the waters with Greinke on this (and probably Marcum as well). I think 3/$51 million might be a bit low to entice him, but of course you never know. I could possibly see 3/$60 million or 4/$80 million getting it done, though.
  12. I could see them going to an alternate hat with the retro logo in the current color scheme. That would be pretty cool. dlk makes a good point that they can probably make more money having essentially two different sets of merchandise to sell. WTP, I don't think it's exactly like the Vikings. Apparently the current players got a bit tired of the '82 team 25th anniversary hoopla in 2007. They want to win and create their own legacy with the current team and look. At least that's the impression I've gotten from Olson talking about this on the D-List.
  13. WTP, I really hope you're right. Extending all three of Weeks, Marcum, and Greinke would be fantastic. it would give the team a good and realistic 4-5 year window (assuming extensions of roughly that length) to really compete, even with Prince gone after this season.

  15. For whatever it's worth, Drew Olson has remarked repeatedly that the current players hate the throwback uniforms. I don't think you'll see them go back to the pinstripe look.
  16. Brewers TV broadcaster Brian Anderson with a write-up that really makes me giddy (props to Adam McCalvy for referencing them): The Brewers can win the World Series. I know, I know, it's December and a lot has to go right during the course of a long season to even make the playoffs. But, there is no question, the 2011 Milwaukee Brewers have the "bones" of an actual finish-line-championship team. Zack Greinke is a game changer. He immediately goes to the top of Milwaukee's rotation giving all subsequent slots an advantage on every other rotation match-up outside the Phillies. The offensive weapons are in place and will arrive to the ballpark each day burden-free, knowing they don't need to score six runs to have a chance to win. In Greinke, Yovani Gallardo, and Shaun Marcum, you have three pitchers who were all Opening Day starters and aces of their respective staff's last season. The current starting rotation of Greinke (10-14, 4.17 ERA), Gallardo (14-7, 3.84), Marcum (13-8, 3.64), Randy Wolf (13-12, 4.17), and Chris Narveson (12-9, 4.99) is perhaps...take a breath...on paper...THE BEST ROTATION EVER ASSEMBLED IN 41 YEARS OF BREWERS BASEBALL.
  17. paulmolitor4, you're probably right. I think that is the way he will go. I hope he re-signs Capuano as rotation insurance, but obviously with the plan to start him out of the pen. Then maybe sign a couple cheap "scrap heap" types that he usually has a knack to pick up. We have to remember that the bullpen was a real strength last year once Axford was given a chance and Loe and Braddock were brought up. Also Parra was very good as a reliever once he was demoted from the starting rotation. Plus, if you factor in the improved rotation taking some of the workload off the relievers, and I'm really not too worried about the bullpen right now.
  18. I bet in another off-season or two we're all going to be talking about how loaded the farm system looks. This kind of things seems to be pretty cyclical. Wisconsin Sports Tap has a pretty good write up detailing why we shouldn't be too pessimistic about the current farm system. Definitely worth a read.
  19. I was just saying Stetter might be an option. I don't think I want Melvin signing any veteran relievers going forward at this point. We've just been burned by too many of them.
  20. I know people are going to laugh...but I've wondered if Braun would have an easier time in center field because of this reasoning.
  21. I just can't see him holding up defensively in CF. He would be a great upgrade over Gomez offensively, but a huge downgrade defensively.
  22. Zycho, you make some interesting points. However, I hated the '90s look because it was just generic and boring. A Notre Dame ripoff lettering on a logo that basically just says, "Hey, we're a baseball team!" Not exciting or interesting at all. I did sort of like the lettering on the jerseys, though. Overall I'm fine with the current logo and unis. Maybe a few tweaks would be fine, but I think the current look is good one. Professional and sharp, and identifies with the city and state.
  23. Yeah, a Counsell one would be popular just for the home town connection. I can't see them doing a Cirillo one at this point. I mean, I know he had a nice career with the Brewers...but what's really the point in 2011?
  24. If it was a choice between Edmonds and Podsednik, I'd rather have Scottie at this point.
