  1. I wonder if Melvin also had interest in Valentine as was reported earlier? I guess it doesn't matter too much at this point. Frankly, I wouldn't be surprised if Peterson ends up coming back as pitching coach and even Randolph as bench coach right now.
  2. My guess is that at best we could get a #3 type starting pitcher for McGehee. That wouldn't be the worst thing, but doesn't really do much to help the top of the rotation like we so desperately need.
  3. Or Jay Leno, for that matter. "Have you heard about this? Have you heard about this one? Ron Roenicke says we're going to be more aggressive. I just hope that means walking the fine line between taking as many naps as Ken Macha did and drinking as much coffee as Ned Yost!" [Cue drum shot]
  4. Well, that clarifies that. I've never heard of Gary Roenicke being mentioned as a coaching candidate for the Brewers, though.
  5. This might make sense. There's a glut of pretty good power hitting 1Bs on the market this winter. Of course, the team has to have confidence in playing Gamel at 3B then, and that doesn't seem to be the case.
  6. Who is this "Gary" you speak of?
  7. You seem to enjoy doing this routine on an annual basis.
  8. This was an interesting blurb on MLB Trade Rumors: Rosenthal writes that the A's "are believed to have made a strong push" for Iwakuma. He speculates that if the Brewers are willing to part with Casey McGehee, they could potentially match up for a trade with Oakland given their need for pitching.
  9. I'm virtually positive they do.
  10. Well, Greinke/Gallardo would definitely give you a one-two combo at the top of the rotation comparable to Carpenter/Wainwright or Lincecum/Cain (just as examples). I do agree that I don't want to see the farm system cleaned out just to get a pitcher for two seasons, though.
  11. Well, there is room right now. The problem is that gives you basically: Gallardo/Wolf/????/Narveson/Capuano. And if the unknown guy ends up being another re-tread guy like a John Garland or another Doug Davis type, I don't think that's looking much better than what we had in 2010. Of course if Melvin can swing a trade for Zach Greinke or someone comparable, things look a lot brighter.
  12. Not totally surprised over RR's hire as manager. Mark Attamasio obviously liked him, had the final one-on-one interview with him, plus being a west coast guy and former Dodgers player, he had it made. Not sure RR was Doug's first choice. I really doubt Roenicke's two and a half seasons as a Dodger in the early '80s had anything to do with hire as Brewers manager.
  13. Anyone else think Roenicke was hinting that Peterson may not be back next season? Or was I just reading too much into it?
  14. Except with less hair.
  15. I remember him as the Tigers manager from when I was a kid, but of course his best days were as manager of the "Big Red Machine" in the '70s. RIP Sparky.
  16. My guess is just to have someone on the roster in case Lucroy or Kottaras get hurt? They still have plenty of room on the 40 man right now anyway.
  17. I am not sure the return would be high enough. If we trade both we have to sign a stopgap for a year. If the return is good enough, trade both. Couldn't you just call up Joe Koshansky (or someone else), or sign a guy like Overbay on the cheap? I certainly wouldn't use the need for a stopgap as an excuse not to make the best move for the club in the long term. You may be right that the return may not be there for Fielder, though. If he does remain a Brewer for 2011, I think the team has to "go for it" again though. No point in paying Fielder $15 million or so if the team isn't going to contend.
  18. Well, if you are going to compare Narveson to Capuano directly, I think it's safe to say who still has some upside left. Narveson is four years younger than Cappy. I like Capuano and hope he gets another chance, but I wouldn't do it at the expense of Narveson.
  19. Yeah, this quote really struck me in particular: "Nobody knew what to say," (Scott) Boras said. "There was an air in the locker room of shock, bewilderment. None of the players knew if they should approach Mr. Adenhart. And Scioscia said, 'Ron would like to say a few words.' "Let me tell you something -- I've met presidents, I've heard a lot of people speak. And the 10-minute conversation he had with the Angels that day, the eloquence of it, the depth of it, and the impact of it, it was one of the most dynamic conversations that I've ever heard in my life. In the most difficult situation you can be in, this man was clearly at his best, and it was natural, it was instinctive. I realized that this was a born leader."
  20. MLB ready pitchers would probably mean some combination of Rogers, Rivas, and maybe Jeffress. I don't know if Odorizzi would qualify as he's still probably a couple seasons away from the bigs. Not sure if I would do something like that or not. A Royals fan on another message board was saying they would probably have little interest in Gamel, since they are pretty well stocked with corner players.
  21. If you don't see us contending next season, why not just trade Fielder now?
  22. Ray' Maddon thrilled for Roenicke. "They're getting a guy who is very good on details, really well-thought out and well-prepared," said Maddon. "They're also getting a guy with very strong opinions, but he can back them up. There's no question about that. "The way I've always described Ronnie is he sees things in baseball before they happen. I think that's why we got along so well, because I feel we're cut from the same particular cloth and we were able to really co-exist at coaches. He was always looking for the advantage, and I was doing the same thing. Believe me, you're getting a really bright baseball person, and one of the most honest people I've met in my life. That's a real good thing when talking to Major League players. He's going to talk to those guys straight-up."
  23. AJAY, I was pulling for Valentine too, but I think you are being a bit over the top. Macha was seen as a veteran "winning" manager, and look where that got us. Roenicke seems like he is well regarded and will have a personality and philosophy that will fit where this team is going. Maybe he'll end up being a disaster, but it's way too early to say.
  24. Maybe if MLB promoted all the teams properly... Personally I don't really care what the ratings were. Not a knock on Principessa posting about them. I just hate how people will use this to basically say, "The Yankees should be in the Series every season."
  25. Brian Anderson with some very effusive praise, from the JSOnline Brewers blog: "He's on the short list of most impressive people I've ever met," said Anderson. "I know that's a big statement and I don't say things like that about people very often but as far as character goes and what he knows about baseball, I couldn't have been more impressed. "He's a baseball Tony Dungy. He's humble, a quiet leade, a great leader. He misses nothing. Every player who has every played for him loved him. He really believes in a team having one voice, in everybody being united for the same goal. Players buy into that. He treats people with respect and knows how to assess every situation. "I'm not sure the Brewers really know what they've got just yet."
