  1. I think the fact that there was apparently so little interest in Prince during the trade deadline is a worse sign for him. This probably doesn't help his cause, though.
  2. Agreed. I didn't want Jackson at all. I think people get a bit over excited when they hear any starting pitcher that we could possibly get. Kind of reminds me of all the Javier Vasquez talk last year.
  3. Yeah, it seems like a fair value contract, especially if he continues playing anything like he has this year.
  4. Yeah, I have to (grudgingly) agree with this. I was disappointed Melvin made no moves whatsoever, but I guess I just have to trust that there wasn't much available. I would not be shocked to possibly see Edmonds, Hoffman, maybe a couple others, dealt this month. It seems not uncommon to see veterans dealt in waiver deals. I do think with the right moves this team can easily contend again next year. Of course, it all hinges on being able to add quality starting pitching and not just signing more Doug Davis/Braden Looper types.
  5. Yeah, I tend to think Hart will stay in RF at this point. If Weeks also is extended, I could see Lawrie moving to 3B (possibly with McGehee getting traded down the line) and Gamel playing 1B.
  6. Yeah, I agree Stevo. I could see Sveum or Randolph being a bit of an improvement in terms of wins down the stretch, and then the team would basically be obligated to retain them next season. I'd rather see all possible candidates considered at that point.
  7. I think it's a bit of a risk, but a calculated one. And yeah, it was definitely nice to hear repeatedly how much Hart wanted to stay. It's nice as a fan to hear a player be so enthusiastic about wanting to be part of the team long term. The article also mentions they will probably try to extend Weeks, which I know a lot of people here would love to see.
  8. Hart gets his wish. While his name was being bandied about on the trade rumor mill in recent weeks, Hart repeatedly said he wanted to stay with the Brewers and sign a contract extension rather than being dealt to another club. That wish came true Monday morning when the Brewers announced that Hart agreed to a three-year extension through the 2013 season. The deal buys out the final year of the 28-year-old right fielder’s arbitration eligibility in 2011 as well as his first two years of free agency. No financial terms were released but the deal is probably worth close to $25 million. Hart is making $4.8 million this season, and probably would have been in line for a $6-7 million salary in 2011 after a big 2010 season.
  9. Sounds like Wolf just has a bad bruise. X-rays came back negative. So I guess that's a sort of silver lining right now.
  10. I think they'll try to extend Weeks. Haudricourt hinted at that recently, if I'm not mistaken. I think the general feeling is that the makeup of the team for the next season or two is really up in the air, and at least they're trying to keep their options open.
  11. Yes, but Kazmir just is not very good. I'd rather keep Prince and take the comp picks then give him up for another Parra/Narveson type pitcher.
  12. Another day, another loss for the Crew. Glad we decided to stay in contention and not make any trades. Seriously though, I hope Wolf isn't badly hurt. We need at least someone halfway decent pitching the rest of the year, other than Gallardo.
  13. Prince should make around $15-18 million next season. Perfectly fair for the level of production he can expect to provide. I am not very optimistic the market for him this off-season is going to be very good. There will be too many 1Bs on the market to really get a good return. I stand by my earlier prediction that Prince will still be a Brewers in 2011.
  14. Maybe it isn't a big deal. But the typical baseball player response would be, "I'm happy to still be here with my teammates. I hope we can win a lot of games down the stretch." His abrasiveness and lack of tact tell me he really doesn't care too much for being a Brewer anymore. It's too bad Melvin couldn't help him out and send him elsewhere.
  15. I like that they are at least willing to have guys change positions and open up their options for next season. I read that they are also experimenting with Lawrie.
  16. Prince's latest comment on not being traded: "I don't want to talk about it." Nice, Prince.
  17. Honestly I can't articulate my real feelings without breaking forums rules. So I'll just say, "screw this team". My biggest fear was that approaching this deadline, the team would be hovering around .500 and make a couple middling moves. The "fake contention" issue I have outlined in the past. Instead, they're clearly out of contention and do nothing. No real attempt by Melvin evident either. I have no real hope for the off-season or next year. I consider myself a die-hard Brewers fan, but right now I don't see anything to look forward to whatsoever. Extremely disheartened right now.
  18. Heyman just tweeted that the Jackson deal is done, and he's going to the ChiSox for Hudson, and David Holmberg. Story up soon on SI.com.
  19. Just as an aside...boy, what a boring trade deadline. Last year we at least had hints and rumors that Melvin was trying to work on some big things. He made a marginal move for Claudio Vargas, which was at least something. This year I expect absolutely nothing to happen before 3 PM CST tomorrow.
  20. Pilprin, I think the problem is that the White Sox don't really have any other high end minor league SPs right now.
  21. Well, just for argument's sake, if you're applying to a big corporation, they could tell you what branch (city) you will work at if you want to be employed by them.
  22. I think the main point is that you at least talk to the guy before dealing him, which I assume Melvin would if he was going to deal Edmonds. It would be very bad to be perceived as not taking a veteran's wishes into consideration when making the deal. Maybe it's one of those dumb "baseball traditions", but it's real and exists.
  23. My guess is the ChiSox are going to get Dunn in a three team deal.
  24. My point was that you can talk about the manager "inspiring guys" and "guys wanting to play for him", all you want. However, if the pitching rotation flat out sucks (worst in the NL last year, near the bottom again this season), there really isn't too darn much any manager can do with that. You have an "ace" who is more like a strong #2 and a bunch of guys who are, at best, #4/5 types. Not really anything a Bobby Valentine can do with that. As for RobDeer45's comments, I don't buy that Melvin's done a great job with his budget. Yes, he's been good at picking up some diamonds in the rough (Loe, Kapler, McGehee, etc). However, he has been horribly inefficient with his budget, especially in terms of pitching. Look at all the dead money tied up in Suppan and Bill Hall. Look at all the money tied up in the signings this off-season that haven't panned out at all. We're not a low payroll team. This is a mid-market team, and at some point I would think Attnasio would question how his budget is being spent for such a low return in terms of wins.
  25. I think the best solution would be better guaranteed compensation for clubs that lose a premium free agent, and limits on how many premier free agents any club can sign in a single off-season. Really, let's not get this thread way off topic, though.
