  1. I don't think anyone has suggested every prospect is going to be injury free. A cursory examination of Brewers prospects over the last 10 years would suggest it's foolish to do so. Still, no one stated such an opinion anyway, that I've seen. I think the basic premise being raised, is that you try to get as much quality pitching talent as possible in the minor league system, since many will get hurt or flame out. Since we are only starting to get caught up with raising young pitching through the draft (really only in the last couple drafts), the only other realistic way to do it is through trades. I do agree with your statement earlier in the thread, that alluded to the fact that Melvin has been woefully inefficient with how he's spent the money allocated to the MLB roster.
  2. Well, you're assuming a lot in that post. Yes, A-ball players would probably take a year or two to develop (at minimum), but assuming that's all we'll get at this point is quite a jump. I think the ideal approach would be to deal both Hart and Fielder for a combination of players that are both in the lower levels, and maybe one or two pitchers that are ready to step into the rotation (at least by Opening Day next season).
  3. Dealing one or two guys very close to free agency isn't, "tearing the team down." We barely made the playoffs in '08, fell short of .500 in '09, and appear to be headed for an even worse record this season. I don't see how staying the course with the same guys and the same approach to making the team better is realistically viable at this point.
  4. Why would the Angels want Fielder next season? Morales should be back and ready by then.
  5. Sanchez is only under team control for a couple more years. I wouldn't be excited to get him, unless that is the best return out there. It sounds like the Giants aren't even willing to part with him, though. What did they expect to give up for Hart? Some marginal position players or something?
  6. Is it just me or does Boras seem a bit agitated that anyone would dare question his assertions about Prince? http://www.jsonline.com/blogs/sports/98394679.html?page=1#comments
  7. Yeah, that is what it sounds like. Let them fade down the stretch if they aren't willing to make a meaningful deal for one of our bats.
  8. Loney would be nice to have around, but I wouldn't want him as the centerpiece of a deal for Prince. I'd still want one high quality SP in return.
  9. Slightly off topic, but it seems like CC Sabathia has been infected by some sort of Yankee-itis: http://castrovince.mlblogs.com/archives/2010/07/the_truth_we_fear_to_reveal.html
  10. Yes, I don't mean he was literally evil. I have heard he did a lot for charity, and if so, good for him. I just think he did a lot more bad for the sport than good, especially as it affected small markets like Milwaukee.
  11. Yes, every sport needs villains, but evil won out way too much in this case.
  12. I don't think it's a sad day. Steinbrenner is as big a villain as there has been in baseball, right up there with Scott Boras in terms of people who have earned my complete and utter contempt. Under his reign the Yankees have turned into a mafia style organization that routinely publicly bashes any person or concept that opposes their complete domination of the sport. He bought a lot of championships so the heavy handed New York fans and media could gloat about their superiority; and that's about all you can really say about his "contributions" to the sport. I hope Hank and Hal sell the team now that the old man is dead, and that franchise goes back to being a joke like it was in the '80s and early '90s.
  13. Can't say I'm shedding too many tears over this.
  14. Holding out for all "compensation" (notice I keep putting that word in quotes) draft picks for all three of Hart, Fielder, and Weeks would be terrible. Not only are those high picks not guaranteed (see the Sabathia situation with the Yankees), but we'd be looking at a bunch of guys that would be 2-3 years out, minimum, from helping the big league club. By that point, Braun and Gallardo would be almost done with their current contracts. My gut feeling is similar to monty. I think Hart gets traded before July 31, as I think there are a lot of clubs he could help out right now. I think Fielder will be dealt this winner, when there will be more buyers for a 1B type. And I think Weeks is kept for next season, and possibly extended (or let walk for FA and possible comp picks then).
  15. Yeah, I agree with DougJones. I don't like the All-Star Game being turned into some kind of political issue. MLB had the game scheduled before the law was passed (which basically just duplicates the federal law anyway...). Boycotting the game just punishes local fans and the local economy.
  16. Yeah, the Yankees attitude generally seems to be, "Our way or the highway." They lost out on a player they wanted, now they'll probably just go after him with a vengeance in the off-season. No big loss for them.
  17. Even Bobby Valentine has been incoherent. Based on his announcing I do not want him to be the Brewers' next manager.
  18. "Trade him now, his value will never be higher."
  19. Remove the letters and modify it with the name of whoever gets #22 next?
  20. I'm in the chat room if anyone cares to join me.
  21. Bobby Valentine just picked "Jose Ortiz" to win this thing.
  22. I agree with Crew07 in principle. I just don't see how you can look at this team last season or this season and see them as legitimate contenders. Yes, last year the team was hampered by some injuries and still squeaked out 80 wins, but what about this season? Who has gotten hurt that really mattered? Yeah, Gallardo is on the DL, but should be back sooner than later. Who else is missing that has been so critical? Zaun? Hawkins? It's time to do something different and make some moves. Sometimes you have to take a step back to take two steps forward. Yes, seeing Fielder get traded will hurt. But it's not like there is any way in hell he'll be a Brewer after next season. Read Tom Haudricourt's latest comments. I don't want to see Fielder leave and just get "compensation" picks. Knowing this franchise's luck, we'd get screwed over like with Sabathia. That's just not good enough at this point, in my opinion.
  23. Well, I think the franchise has to look beyond this year and next though. If Fielder and possibly Hart are almost certainly gone after next season, isn't it best to plan ahead?
  24. Just saw an interesting tweet from Tom Haudricourt. He says he got to have a long talk with Scott Boras, and he's now convinced there is a, "0% chance the Brewers will be able to re-sign Prince."
