  1. Apparently the Yankees were "livid" about the way Seattle handled the negotiations for Lee. "The Yankees do not do business that way," an angered Yankees official said of the Mariners agreeing to a deal, but backing out before it could be finalized. "When we say something is a deal, it is a deal. "Yes, this is frustrating and disappointing." Gee, poor Yankees. I almost feel sorry for them. Wait, no, I really don't.
  2. I liked it. I like that he admitted he's been "terrible", but still oozes with confidence. Makes me believe he will quickly get out of this slump he's been in.
  3. Yeah, it's not like "good team = good attendance" is some sort of mysterious equation that is lost on Mark Attanasio and Doug Melvin.
  4. Oh good lord...Braun is signed to an amazing contract, assuming he resumes hitting how he typically does. Yes, his defense is sub-par, but it isn't that big a deal when you look around the league and see some of the slugs manning left field. Anyway, if Weeks will sign for something like 4 years, $24 million total (and the contract would start next season), I wouldn't have a big problem with that. Anything more than that, and I think it's out of line.
  5. I just don't get the sentiment that Weeks warrants a 3-4 year extension. He is a sub-par defender; and while his bat is pretty solid, it's not irreplaceable. Plus with his injury history, I just think it's way too much of a risk to give him that kind of contract. Maybe if he's willing to take a bit of a hometown discount, fine, but I really don't want to see him locked up with a sizable deal. I'd also like to see if Lawrie can possibly stick at 2B before moving him. It seems like everyone wants to shuffle McGehee, Gamel, Weeks, Lawrie, Braun, etc. to different positions. At some point some of these guys have to stick at the positions they played in the minors.
  6. I've gotten a bunch of Chapmans, but just the regular one.
  7. Doesn't Cirillo still have some sort of broadcasting job with another team, or am I wrong?
  8. If the Brewers did deal Fielder to the Rangers, they'd probably have to take a similar contract back in return. It doesn't sound like they have much money left. Not really sure if Texas would be looking to make another big trade, as it sounds like they gave up some pretty nice prospects already for Lee.
  9. There's no chance they have Rickie change positions at this point. I don't know why people are so high on Weeks. Yes, he's having a nice season. Frankly, though, I'm just glad he has managed to stay healthy. I would trade him for a decent return before he gets injured again. I don't want to see him extended for some ridiculous $30-40 million+ contract, which he doesn't really deserve.
  10. Actually, I've heard from quite a few casual fans that heard about the "$200 million" rumor regarding Prince. Most people say, "He's just not worth that." My mom, who is not a baseball expert at all, even said, "They're going to pay a first baseman that kind of money?" I think most fans are smarter than we give them credit for. Not one single person I've talked to has said they should give him a $150-200 million deal. People got over seeing popular players like Burnitz, Sexson, and Lee get traded. They'll get over Prince soon enough, as long as the team gets a good return.
  11. I've heard from someone somewhat connected that Sutton and Schroeder did not get along at all. As far as Schroeder, I guess I'm just not as picky about TV announcers as some. Most announcers will re-use stock phrases over and over. I think Schroeder brings enough to the table to still be entertaining enough. Anderson has grown on me quite a bit.
  12. Well, safe to say he's a bust at this point?
  13. Could just have Counsell play 2B and call up Cruz as a backup or something.
  14. A mediocre lefty returning after a lengthy DL stint, backed by a keystone cop defense? Yeah, I'm not liking the Brewers' odds on this one.
  15. My guess is that all three are "available", but will only be dealt if the price is deemed sufficient. Could see all of them dealt, or none.
  16. He's going to the Rangers. Story is linked in the Majors forum.
  17. Cliff Lee and Mark Lowe to Rangers for Justin Smoak and three others. Being reported by Joel Sherman. Pretty surprising that the Yankees fell out of it after supposedly being the favorites.
  18. Not really. They have Freddy Sanchez at 2B, who is pretty decent.
  19. Haudricourt: Trio on market. For those talking about possibly re-signing Hart, this tidbit is interesting: As much as we've talked about the difficulty of dealing with Fielder's agent, Prince Fielder, the Brewers never have gotten far with Hart's agent, Jeff Berry, either. The sides have butted heads on Hart's worth for years, leading to the first arbitration in the Doug Melvin regime last winter. Judging Weeks' value is difficult as well because of his injury-filled past but he has been healthy this year and is having his best season.
  20. Interesting article from Jeff Fletcher over at Fanhouse: "Brewers put Fielder, Hart, Weeks on table." The Brewers approached the Angels to gauge their interest in Fielder shortly after Kendry Morales was injured, but they were rebuffed. The Brewers are expected to try to move Fielder because they don't think they can re-sign him after 2011, but they may have to wait until the offseason if no more enticing deals come up this month, the source said. Fielder is a Scott Boras client, so any team that acquires him is going to be unlikely to sign him long-term before he tests the market after the 2011 season.
  21. I disagree that this is a dumb move for the Yankees. Let's keep in mind they aren't running away with their division (yet). Anything can happen in the playoffs, but acquiring Lee allows them more room for error, like naivin pointed out. And it's not like they need to worry about prospects that much at this juncture. If I'm not mistaken, Andy Pettitte is a free agent after this season; so they could let him go and re-sign Lee instead.
  22. Another theory out there is that if the Yankees get this deal done, they would trade Vasquez to the Phillies for Werth.
  23. Well, the story is up on MLB Trade Rumors now, so it seems to have some legs. Supposedly they could get the deal done as soon as today, with Montero and other prospects going to the Mariners. Ironically, Lee is scheduled to start against the Yankees tonight, but there may be some sort of gentleman's agreement in place where Lee would not start tonight for either team. Now this says the Twins are considered the favorites to get Lee. Going to be a crazy day on Twitter and such, I think: http://ballhype.com/story/new-leader-for-cliff-lee/?utm_source=twitterfeed&utm_medium=twitter
  24. My guess is they'll still draw just north of 2.5 million this season. Next year they may barely crack 2 million, unless significant moves happen in the off-season.
  25. I don't think too many people would have an issue with sending Gomez down to Nashville at this point. Perhaps he could develop anything resembling plate discipline, and come back up in September.
