  1. Lets not turn this thread into a semantics argument too. Yeah, I'd say if Gallardo is gone for any decent amount of time (like more than one missed start), that pretty much puts the final nail in the coffin for this season. Hopefully Melvin is already starting to put some feelers out there, if the rumors regarding Coffey and Villanueva are true.
  2. Buster Olney raised the possibility of a three team deal involving Lee and the Brewers again, but this time suggests they part with Brett Lawrie. It's just an idea on his part; but I wouldn't like it unless we get a really good couple arms in return.
  3. Can we please stop acting like McGehee is having a horrible year? He slumped a bit in June, yes, but already is starting to bounce back. McGehee 2010: .276/.343./.472/.815, 13 HR, 51 RBI. And yes, I believe if Mat Gamel was putting up that exact line this season, people on this board would be ecstatic.
  4. Figured I'd start a thread on these, as they just came out. I had recently bought a few packs from the '09 set and really like them, so I figured I would get into the 2010 release. I happened to stop by Waukesha Sportscards and bought a box. Pretty happy with this set. I like the designs, and some of the bizarre cards are way out there (Lords of Olympus, Sailors of the Seven Seas, etc). I also like the concept of the historical event cards, where each one has a player and his birth date, and the back of the card details a historical even that happened on that day. Interesting note on the box I got...the top three packs all had relic cards. None of the rest did. So I guess if you are just buying packs, try to get the ones from the very top of the box? I got a Matt Kemp uni relic, Yunel Escobar bat relic, and a Chris Volstad auto. One minor nitpick on this set...some of the pictures seem like they're recycled from last year. Exact same pose of the same player, just shaded a bit differently. Kind of lame on Topps' part. Also, if you buy a whole box, you get an oversized box loader card. Mine was of the Panama Canal.
  5. If you just bought one pack and got a Strasburg chrome, that's pretty amazing.
  6. Yeah, I'd rather take a chance on a prospect that has a chance to be great, than some guy with a much lower ceiling simply because it's "safe". This team has enough depth in the minors where Melvin should be able to take a risk and really boost the starting pitching depth.
  7. I agree with paul. Relievers aren't that hard to find. We need starters. I really hope they move Jeffress into a starting role next season. If he fails as a starter, it's not that tough to move him to the bullpen. Much harder to to the reverse.
  8. Good win all around. I also enjoyed the Brewers' TV announcers ripping on the Cards fans.
  9. Reports Bob Nightengale of USA Today. Edit: Now it looks like they are cleaning house. Hinch had been rumored to be on the chopping block for a while...surprised to see Byrnes fired as well. Edit 2: Kirk Gibson named manager, per Ken Rosenthal.
  10. Personally, I don't want to see any of Weeks, Hart, or McGehee signed to long term deals. Go young and cheap.
  11. Well, I'm obviously not sure who your friend is or what connections he has, but I find that rather hard to believe. They've stuck with Gamel this long, I'd be somewhat disappointed if they dealt him now. Of course the return in such a trade could possibly change my opinion.
  12. Hopefully some better pitching and perhaps a little bit more consistent offense. The right trades and one or two decent FA acquistions (they'll have money to spend) can put this team right back in the hunt. And yeah, I'd seriously consider that trade, but doesn't sound like the Braves are willing to give up that much.
  13. Well, that's where scouting and being judicious are part of a GM's job. Prince Fielder is a star player. He is heating up this year, and is probably going to finish yet again with over 40 homers and 100 RBIs. People talk like he's just OK or above average, when he's basically the best 1B in the NL not named Pujols. I know nothing is guaranteed, either in baseball or in life; but we should be able to get at least one very high upside pitcher who seems likely to make the majors and have a decent career (like a Hellickson or Bumgarner type pitcher). Getting a guy like that would really augment what we already have in the minors with Rivas, Odorizzi, Jeffress, etc. If you can't get one high quality pitching prospect for Prince, maybe there is no point in dealing him to begin with, as the system is just incredibly stacked against the Brewers. May as well make one more run with Prince and take the draft picks is other teams are only willing to offer up questionable prospects for an elite hitter.
  14. Oh, no doubt. I fully expect that to catch up with him eventually.
  15. If Melvin is really that worried about "saving face with the fans" and getting someone "MLB proven", get the other team to throw in a Kevin Mench type position player and get a higher upside pitcher or two with more years of control than Sanchez would give you. Really, this situation is becoming so obvious and I'm so worried Melvin is just going to screw any potential trade up really badly by worrying about the immediate impact on attendance.
  16. I really hate to feed the trolls on this one, but here's Jeff Suppan so far with the Cardinals: 0-2 record, 4.19 ERA, 19.1 IP over 4 starts, 1.81 WHIP. His peripheral numbers seem to be largely in line with what he was doing in Milwaukee, but you have to wonder if there really was something to the "better defense equals better results" argument. Maybe it's simply that he's averaging less than 5 runs a start and opposing hitters aren't getting a chance to pound him later in his outings.
  17. Well, that seems to pretty thoroughly shoot down this idea. I really hope Melvin isn't being that close minded about trading an outfielder who is about to get rather expensive if the right deal presents itself.
  18. Yeah, I'm kind of hoping Macha is not fired during the season for those same reasons, Baldkin. I'd rather see all candidates considered during the off-season than see Sveum or Randolph do "OK" during the second half of the year and then get handed the job. Ideally I'd like to see them bring in someone from outside the organization who has some fresh ideas; though I realize with MLB managers that is a lot to hope for.
  19. http://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2010/06/rangers-giants-discussing-bengie-molina-trade.html Seems like kind of an odd trade, as Molina isn't having a spectacular season. He's still an upgrade over their current staff (they also have Saltalamacchia still wallowng in AAA). The Rangers also get cash with Molina, in exchange for Chris Ray and a PTBNL.
  20. Somehow a win yesterday would have made things look a lot better to me. 15-12 just looks more impressive, for whatever reason. They really needed to win that series against the Astros. This just isn't looking like any sort of playoff caliber team this season.
  21. Sanchez already has three years of service time in. Ideally we'd find someone who would be under control for more seasons.
  22. Yeah, they're going for over $100 on eBay, though I think I'll just hang onto it.
  23. I was at this game with my wife. We went up to the NYCE Club after the 5th inning, basically just to check it out. We stayed up there the rest of the game, and I'm rather glad we did.
