  1. This seems crazy. Just a couple years ago he was a feared starting pitcher, and now he's going to be a setup man.
  2. "Cheering for the Yankees is like cheering for the house in blackjack."
  3. Why wouldn't they at least give Parra or Narveson a chance before jumping on him? Wouldn't signing Washburn just compound the problem of already having too many SPs with not enough spots?
  4. I like it. I've long thought having weighted division schedules is dumb. How many times do the Brewers have to play the Reds or Pirates in one season, for example? I don't know if I'd be in favor of moving the Brewers back to the AL or not. On one hand, I enjoy the strategy in the NL. On the other, I hate seeing most pitchers try to hit. The idea of the Yankees regularly coming to Miller Park and hopefully getting their rear ends kicked is certainly appealing.
  5. I'm not sure how anyone can complain about an in game 1.00 WHIP and 2.41 ERA from Dave Bush. It's not like he's supposed to be the staff ace, even though he is pitching like it right now.
  6. I think it's one of those things that would be "nice" in theory, but just doesn't seem that practical based on population of other cities in Wisconsin. At least they already have the Timber Rattlers as a single A affiliate, so that helps if guys need rehab stints, etc.
  7. I hate to be the one to bring this up, but I wonder if this cloud of uncertainty is weighing down on Prince. I know it's only about 50 ABs, but the guy is only batting .224 with a .286 SLG. I realize it's early and he has started slow before, but it's a bit more pronounced right now.
  8. Good win last night. Let's get another tonight and remind the Pirates that they're not supposed to be in second place above the Brew Crew.
  9. I wonder if there's any chance Zaun or Kottaras get traded or just DFAed. Melvin seemed pretty high on Lucroy before the season started, and I wonder if a mid-season call up isn't out of the question with this move.
  10. When I got out of college, my first job was working in retail. We only got a half hour lunch, and they were pretty strict about clocking in and out. I often brought a lunch, but if I didn't, the only nearby places to eat were McDonald's and Arbys. Can't stand either place any more from over indulging in both when I was working there.
  11. I've heard MLB has a hotline players can call any time to find out if a certain substance is on the banned list or not. It's just another pathetic excuse from an athlete not willing to take personal responsibility. Kind of sad, if you ask me. He'll be back and it will be forgotten soon enough, though.
  12. People said the same things when Richie Sexson was dealt. The main difference is that there are other good players on the team now, whereas when Sexson was dealt, he was far and away the best player on the Brewers. Some casual fans and talk radio pundits will trot out the "same ol' Brewers" line, but when held up scrutiny, it won't be apt this time.
  13. From Adam McCalvy: "Temporary inactive list. Still at home tending to a pending childbirth." Edit: He has a blog up about it now.
  14. So, this has to somewhat put a damper on any playoff aspirations the Reds had, right?
  15. Well, that's a separate issue. With the way Ortiz is going so far this year, they may look for a guy like Prince sooner than later. That really doesn't help them in the outfield though. I wonder if they'd have any interest in Corey Hart or even Jody Gerut at this point.
  16. I'd be reasonably happy with that, though it obviously wouldn't address our biggest need. I'm not sold that LaPorta is going to be anything special at this point, so I'm not sure it would really be that great of an idea, specifically. Still, two high ceiling impact bats wouldn't be the worst thing in the world with all the pitching depth we suddenly seem to have in the minors.
  17. I really hope that is the way the team goes. I think I'd rather trade him in the middle of this season, as I would guess we can get more value for him in the middle of the year than waiting 'til the off-season. Of course that is assuming some team is willing to give us a decent trade for him. I just don't want to see Melvin hold onto him if the team is just kind of floating around .500 in July, and it's looking like the pitching staff won't hold up again like last season. That would be the absolute worst case scenario, in my view.
  18. No probably not. He's already 32 and for some reason I can see him declining relatively soon. And since we won't really have any expensive dead weight contracts after this year, the only thing that would make it work is demanding that Houston eat some of his salary. I'm guessing they will be somewhat reluctant to to that with still having several other big money contracts to deal with (Lee in particular).
  19. Isn't the game scheduled to be carried on WMLW, which I believe Charter carries anyway?
  20. I'd assume that since the place is so new, they are probably still developing the website. But yeah, probably could have presented a wider selection of pics.
  21. Definitely will be a difficult problem to fix. At the same time, the idea of some agent probably taking advantage of these kids and getting 40% of their pay is also pretty slimy. As far as inner cities in the US, it seems like MLB has made some efforts in those regards. I just don't know if it's anything to really lament that much. If they would rather play other sports that are more accessible, like basketball, is there really any way to get around that?
  22. I would assume taking on Oswalt's salary would all but ensure not extending Prince. Maybe that's not the worst thing at this point though.
  23. Then again, maybe managers just don't matter all that much. I think a mediocre manager with a great team will more than likely beat a great manager with a mediocre team more often than not.
  24. Do you actually remove the nest, or just spray it and leave it up there? I think there are just certain spots some pests are prone to using. Kind of like how I have to tie a plastic bag on the light outside our front door to keep robins from building a nest on it every spring.
  25. I guess I find it kind of funny that Ned Yost is being fondly remembered by many on this site currently. I remember quite well how the man was almost universally vilified right before he was fired, and many were ecstatic to be rid of him. My opinion of him is basically unchanged: I think he did a good job taking the team to respectability, but I don't think he was going to get the Brewers to the playoffs. As far as Macha, it's not like he doesn't have a track record of success. This season he will reach his 500th career win as an MLB manager (assuming he doesn't get fired prematurely as some are suggesting). Not too shabby. I'm not a huge fan of the guy, but I guess I get tired of seeing suggestions of changing managers as some sort of "cure all" for fixing a flawed team.
