  1. Don't forget Wes Helms slipping on some stairs down in Puerto Rico. (Wow, two posts about Helms in one day for me. Scary).
  2. I was just thinking that. Somehow I think the Brewers marketing people figured a Sabathia Brewers bobblehead would be more desirable than a Wes Helms Marlins bobble http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/wink.gif
  3. That reflects something many of us have hypothesized for a while; that the team is essentially tapped out as far as revenue generation. You can only increase ticket and concession prices so much on an annual basis. It's too bad that their media revenue is apparently so low. It's also a bit disappointing to hear that ticket sales are slightly behind last year, though 30,000 doesn't seem like a large gap to close.
  4. We can only hope he is given that short a leash. It's not that I'm cheering against him (we could at least use the pitching depth), but if he gets shelled two or three times, I hope the Brewers are honest with themselves and with him.
  5. Just read this was the biggest contract ever given to a pitcher with less than three seasons of MLB service time. Fun fact, I guess.
  6. I would assume your municipality has leash laws, which the owner is violating. Assuming you are walking on a public sidewalk, you are within your rights on this one, as far as I know.
  7. And this is the guy who's going to get his first start of the year at Wrigley. I'd swear that article was from the Onion.
  8. Also, what is meant by "local revenues - $20 million." Is that supposed to be local media revenue? I doubt it's anywhere close to that, if that's what he is implying.
  9. Yeah, maybe he's right, but the impression I get is that he pulled those numbers out of a hat.
  10. For them it seems to be more about public goodwill than anything. I read that they lost a large sponsorship from GM before last season, and instead of selling some cheap sponsorship, they put up a tribute to the "big three" automakers.
  11. The Marlins model would fail here. They don't draw consistently, and people get sick of their fire sales and rebuilding. They could be moving away from that once they get their new stadium, though.
  12. I really doubt that's actually Prince Fielder's Facebook page. Probably one of the many fakes for various athletes, etc.
  13. I would like to get one from this year as well...unfortunately I don't really have anything to trade at the moment. Would be willing to pay a few bucks for one, if someone has an extra lying around.
  14. Though I usually change the channel when I see CC Sabathia in pinstripes these days (though I don't begrudge him personally for taking all that money), I'll never forget how good he was in 2008. Without him, we'd probably still be sitting around talking about "28 years of futility". The Brewers are simply commemorating a memorable moment from each decade, along with the bobble tie-in. Personally, I'm looking forward to getting the CC bobble. So what if he's on a different team now? For those special three plus months, he was amazing for Milwaukee, and I won't forget it.
  15. I have the gift box appearing at the top of my screen now. Clicked it, then remember this thread. Glad I didn't do the "upgrade."
  16. Ouch (slightly off topic): Todd (WI) To be fair to Attanasio, he kinda got screwed on the Corey Hart contract Klaw Why? Because he forgot to non-tender him in December?
  17. I doubt they're in a rush to extend Escobar. He's still a rookie...I would think they would like to see what he can do for a full season before extending him. As far as Weeks, I can understand their reluctance to do anything, given his injuries. Maybe after the season they can work something out. Really, I don't think either guy's status should have much impact on whether or not Prince signs long term.
  18. Yes, walking out of the stadium in freezing rain was not a nice feeling. Thankfully I wore layers and a fairly thick jacket, but my face felt like it was being sandblasted. Plus hobbling around on a sprained ankle didn't make it any better. It was a great game, though, which made up for any suffering outdoors.
  19. I think if anything it would tell Fielder they are serious about paying their good players and being competitive going forward. I'm sure one thing that worries Fielder, in the back of his mind, is that if they give him a huge contract, they won't have a good core around him. Now at least they have Gallardo and Braun long term, and a core of good young cheap talent. This may not matter to Boras, but I bet it matters to Prince. If Prince signs an extension, it opens up the "window of opportunity" in a huge way. As far as the option on Gallardo's new deal, I would assume it is a club option. Otherwise why would there be that $600,000 buyout (assuming that info is accurate)?
  20. If those numbers are anywhere close to true, I think this is outstanding. Assuming Gallardo stays healthy, etc.
  21. I think a good solution would be to give teams some recourse for recouping some of their money if a FA they sign performs significantly below projections or career norms. Of course, the union would probably never agree to this because it would hold players more accountable, and could be one step toward eliminating guaranteed contracts.
  22. Sure, I think everyone here would love to see Suppan come in and pitch very well, since he is getting the chance to start for the Brewers, deservedly or not. However, does anyone realistically think that can happen? I saw him pitch in person at spring training, and I just don't think he has any "stuff" left at all (and he never had that much to begin with since signing with the Brewers). At the time I supported signing him, since we desperately needed a reliable SP at the time to just take the ball every fifth day. I think there may have been some more intangible positives to the signing, but at this point, those positives are far outweighed. It's clear he has declined significantly since '06, and I just don't want to see him get more than a handful of starts to show if he has anything left. If they keep trotting him out for half a season or more when it's clear he is "done" as an effective MLB starter, I will be quite disappointed and frustrated with Melvin.
  23. Jeff, thanks for your opinion. How is your restaurant going?
  24. Friday night on Brewerfan.net: "4 games in..." "A mixture of vitriolic panic and sarcastic praise keep the forum in an uproar. Will PeaveyFury be able to handle the excitement before going criminally insane? Tune in at 10 PM CST to find out!"
  25. I've been wondering for a while if the Brewers, Bucks, and possibly Packers could pool their resources together and form their own TV network. I know it was tried like 20 years ago and failed, but this is a different era now.
