  1. Right. It's one thing to give him a big contract that is relatively fair. It's another thing to give him a Joe Mauer sized deal that would inevitably hamper the team. I just hope the majority of fans can keep some perspective when and if Fielder gets traded.
  2. I thought it would be nice to talk about one of the brighter spots on the team, despite the 3-4 start on the season. I realize it's just been one week into the season, but McGehee seems like he is continuing on his astounding 2009 campagin. In just over 25 ABs, he's putting up a .346/.414/.692/1.106 line. He already has a couple dingers too. Obviously, he won't keep those numbers up all season, but I can't help but think he's going to avoid the "sophomore slump" that many were predicting. His swing and approach at the plate seem impeccable right now.
  3. I think the general consensus is that the two are unrelated. Gallardo's salary shouldn't have that much bearing on whether or not they can afford Prince.
  4. I agree. And I think that is about the limit of what I'd feel comfortable offering Prince. Beyond that, you risk him declining drastically, or just taking up such a high percentage of the payroll that it would be tough paying guys like Escobar more money down the line.
  5. Cain is only under contract with the Giants through 2012, when he'll be making $15 million. I don't think that's the kind of return the Brewers should look for if they're going to deal Prince at this point. You want 2-3 "good, young, & cheap" players that are going to be around 5-6 seasons. We absolutely need a high upside return if we're going to see Prince traded. Melvin absolutely cannot settle for a Carlos Lee type return (which I don't think was a bad trade, it was just completely different circumstances).
  6. Schroeder brings a decent amount of insight combined with a blue collar type attitude that they probably like to have in the Milwaukee market. The Brewers announcing team doesn't bother me. I think Anderson is pretty good, or at least much better than when he started a couple years ago. Apparently others must think so, judging by the fact he is doing games for TBS now.
  7. lcbj68c, that just seems really reactionary to me. The team clearly isn't quite "clicking" on all cylinders yet, but when they do, they will rack up a winning streak. I can feel it. We could win the next two games against the Cubs and suddenly everyone is going to be saying we're playoff bound. I know it's incredibly cliche, but "It's a marathon, not a sprint."
  8. There's still value in being able to lay down a sac bunt if he's batting 8th, especially if there aren't any outs. Besides, with his speed, the sac bunt can turn into a bunt single pretty quickly.
  9. I just don't see why Macha would want to stick with Gomez in the 2 spot at this point. Maybe in the future when he shows he can maintain some kind of decent batting average, and more importantly, a decent OBP. Until then, I think he's much more suited batting 8th. Right now he's just flailing away at the plate. Maybe it's too much pressure for him right now, or maybe he just doesn't have the experience necessary to handle the top of the order.
  10. The Twins old cheapskate owner also passed away; and the new owners (his sons, I think?) seem more intent on spending some money, especially with the new stadium as others have noted.
  11. I disagree. I think I would take the Miller Park crowd any day over the Wrigley neanderthal-like atmosphere. Maybe if the Miller Park crowd starts throwing trash on the field I'll change my tune. I didn't care for the booing after Hoffman's outing last night, either, though. I'm normally one to say the fans can boo if they want, but it seemed a little over the top. He gave up a pair of home runs to two of the absolute best hitters in the game. It's not like he's Jeff Suppan going out there...he's a future Hall of Famer and should be given a bit more respect.
  12. I think he's going to be fine. One thing to remember is that he didn't even pitch most of April last year. The off-season rust could still be coming off a bit (given he barely pitched during spring training). No reason to panic yet.
  13. You should do them a favor and tell them. Maybe they'll take it under advisement, maybe not. Can't hurt, though. Also, if I had Frank Catalanotto on my calendar, I would play "Your Love' ad nauseum.
  14. Kendall was pretty bad behind the plate last year. He was pretty good in '08, but dropped off big time last season. Are people really already looking at him with rose colored glasses? Zaun is just a stop gap measure on a relatively cheap one year deal. If he continues to struggle, I would not be surprised to see Kottaras start to get a majority of the starts by the All-Star break. Then again this same team let Rivera rot on the bench in favor of Kendall last season, so you never know.
  15. I was a big Dunn advocate at the time as well. Though you would have had to put him in LF, and move Braun to RF (I assume), which would have made for a terrible defense. Braun/Fielder/Dunn would be an amazing offensive combo, though.
  16. Yeah, when it was announced during spring training that Gallardo had been renewed, they hinted that they had already been talking about an extension; just that the two sides were too far apart at the time. This wasn't just a sudden thing they hammered out quickly, if that is being implied. At least that is not the impression I get from comments by Yo and Melvin. Fielder is really a completely separate issue. Rosenthal commented on this yesterday, and while I don't put a ton of stock in Rosenthal's expertise regarding the issue, he mentioned that Boras isn't really one to fear free agency, even with several other elite 1B types coming on the market at the same time.
  17. Just a bad game all around, and really disappointing, as they didn't bother putting up much of a fight against a top division rival at home. I hope Macha yelled at the team after the game, or did something to wake them up. Gallardo was not "ace-like" at all, Prince struck out 3 times, Braun didn't do anything at the plate and played shaky defense, Escobar even made a bad play, and our only bright spots were Hart and McGehee. The lineup better be drastically different tonight. It should be evident that Gomez can't handle the 2 spot yet.
  18. A 4 year 24 million extension would be a bargain. Hall had same contract but I know for a fact that he was not even close to the player Rickie is. Do it Doug...you have the same agent so get it done. I agree that such a deal seems relatively reasonable, but what if he gets hurt yet again? It just seems like a big gamble based on Weeks' health history at this point.
  19. I was just saying Hart had a good at bat, in the chat room. That last strike looked kind of borderline, at least on TV.
  20. FWIW, Hart is getting the start this afternoon, so I wouldn't say they've "given up on him" yet.
  21. I want a big win today. I was at the game last night, and while there weren't too many Cards fans, there were enough to annoy me. We need to shut them up.
  22. Just wanted to share that I just played an amazing game on "The Show". Decided to do franchise mode as the Brewers, and got to Opening Day (I played a few spring training games, then simmed the rest). Gallardo went only 6 IP, but had 10 K's, only surrendering 4 hits and 2 walks. Jimenez was also "on", surrendering only a handful of hits and no runs. Tulowitzski hit a huge Sexson-esque 2 run bomb in the 7th to dead center field, and things looked bleak. I managed to push across two runs on an Edmonds triple, and Latroy Hawkins did solid work out of the bullpen, followed by Coffey. Finally, in the 10th inning, Zaun hit a solo home run with two outs to get the win. Zaun seems to be a beast when I play...Braun always struggles for some reason. Braun didn't get a hit on Opening Day for me...but every out he recorded was on a bullet line drive.
  23. That probably makes sense. They have their "spring madness" promotion coming up against the Pirates, which will maybe help close the gap. One would figure that if they play well through the next month or so, ticket sales will be strong going into summer.
  24. I don't think there's any CC "worship", just acknowledging what a great job he did for the Brewers in a historic season. I think it's better than rehashing the 1982 team yet again, personally.
  25. While Braun and Sheets were both integral parts of the season, I think CC is pretty iconic when it comes to the Brewers of '08. Plus the fact that there are already multiple bobbles for each of those guys, but this will be the first Sabathia bobble.
