  1. This discussion further illustrates the difference between markets like Milwaukee and Boston in the world of MLB. Yes, the Red Sox overpaid at least some, but even if Lackey gets injured and never pitches again after the second year, they can just blow the money off and sign someone else. Meanwhile we complain because Melvin made just two bad moves (Hall, Suppan) that have really hamstrung the team. The Red Sox have made arguably even more bad moves, discussed in this thread, and it doesn't hurt their ability to make signings at all. Edit: And I forgot that Boston fans are still discussing how their team may trade for Adrian Gonzalez. Basically they're first class citizens in MLB that get to enjoy big signings and big trades. We're second class and have to hope whatever moves Melvin has room to make don't cripple the team's budget, even if they are relatively modest ones.
  2. It's sounding more and more to me that the Mariners kind of got fleeced. They get Lee for a year, but give up a few key prospects just so the Phillies can get Halladay (with a nice contract) and even more prospects. I don't get it.
  3. It's funny to see some of the Sawx fans whining about this. I think some of them would rather have Bay or Holliday, but I think this is the smarter move for them in the long run. And if Cameron is bad next year, they could just go out and sign someone else next off-season anyway.
  4. Yeah, the Mets should really look at just completely blowing up their team and starting over.
  5. It would be so nice if we somehow replace Suppan with a guy who can put up an ERA under 5.00. I think that ERA projection for Suppan might be too optimistic.
  6. Tyler Kepner of the New York Times is confirming. Supposedly a one year deal worth about $6.5 million. So does this mean Vlad is most likely gone? Matsui will be the DH.
  7. Just saw tweets from Haudricourt and McCalvy both saying that Melvin is unlikely to make any more significant FA signings due to payroll, and that any further moves will probably be through trade. So sounds like my hunch up there was correct (at least for now).
  8. Melvin is almost positively going to get another starter, I just think people have to set their sights fairly low. Davis or Washburn is about the best you can hope for as far as a free agent signing. I'm hoping he goes the trade route instead and gets someone short term, or manages to get a guy like Lowe but with the other team covering a good portion of the contract.
  9. Well, $20 million per year seems to be about the going rate for a top flight ace. It's not like the Phillies are poor.
  10. If those figures are accurate, I think the Phillies are getting a pretty good deal on a top flight ace.
  11. Yeah, I was somewhat surprised how well spoken he was. Not that I expected him to be simple or something, but he seemed really knowledgeable and wasn't just giving the usual "stock baseball answers," that you'd usually expect in a press conferenced like that.
  12. I agree. Lackey isn't an ace...more like a very good #2, but he's a bit older and could wear down towards the end of the deal. But then again, it's not like the Red Sox will be crippled by it even if his performance does fall off.
  13. Big day for the big market teams, it seems like.
  14. It seems like the difference was that Lee was refusing to sign an extension and wanted to test FA after this coming season, whereas Halladay was willing to sign an extension. From that standpoint it seems like a solid move. I do think Halladay is a bit better than Lee, too.
  15. I feel bad for the Blue Jays fans. I hope Toronto is getting some top prospects.
  16. Toronto must be getting some key prospects from both teams, I'd assume.
  17. Heyman reporting a 5 year, $85 million deal with the Red Sox.
  18. Press conference live right now here: http://milwaukee.brewers.mlb.com/media/video.jsp?topic_id=6261176
  19. Holy-you-know-what... From MLB Trade Rumors (where else?): Heyman tweets that a three-way deal has been agreed to with Halladay going to the Phillies and Lee to the Mariners. The Phillies are now trying to sign Halladay to an extension. Edit: Toronto Sun is apparently now confirming as well.
  20. I'm glad they apparently spaced things out relatively evenly with this one. In retrospect the Suppan deal would look not as bad if they had paid him more early on.
  21. Could have just been visiting friends or something. I wouldn't put much stock in that. Some guy on the JSOnline board is always claiming he ran into Sheets down in Louisiana after last season, and Sheets basically told him "There's no way in hell I'll come back to the Brewers."
  22. I don't think we have anything. At least one of the teams would want a top level pitching prospect, and we don't have that available.
  23. I really do not understand that rumor. It seems based off some blind speculation from Ken Rosenthal the other day (I think). I just can't understand why the Phillies would bother to trade for Halladay only to turn around and deal Lee. I don't think Halladay is a big upgrade over Lee. I guess the only advantage for them is if they can get Halladay to agree to an extension (which Lee seems to balking at currently).
  24. If he plays anything like he did this past year, then it's a pretty good bargain. I think we'll need him with Weeks probably being a bit of a question mark for next year. I admit I was worried Melvin would overpay to keep him, but this seems like a nice deal for both sides.
  25. Yeah, I haven't had any connectivity issues, but it's a hard wired connection for this PC. Of note, though, I have had zero issues with our other devices on our wireless network since getting the new PC (which serves as the "hub" for the network, as the router connects off it). Seems like they took what was good with Vista and got rid of all the bad annoying stuff, which is nice.
