  1. I had a dream during the off-season that CC Sabathia announced he was re-signing with the Brewers. Wish that one had been true.
  2. I think it would be safer to say Washburn will more likely be moved at this point.
  3. Me too. While I admit not knowing a couple of those players, it looks like a good deal on both sides.
  4. "This team needs to get pitching from somewhere - for this year and the future. 2-3 starters are definitely needed." Exactly...which is why I wonder if the time to do that is now. If Melvin waits and tries to do it during the off-season, and fails to get a top tier pitcher again, he should be fired.
  5. I guess I'm glad. I definitely didn't want to give anyone significant up for a couple months of Jarrod Washburn.
  6. Well, the thing is that Villanueva has proven himself to usually be reliable out of the bullpen...so having him be a starter just weakens an already taxed bullpen even further.
  7. There's no way the Reds trade Volquez. I don't know why it's being discussed.
  8. I guess he could be traded as a PTBNL? Weeks' injury isn't the reason for this team's decline. Look at who've we've had playing 2B since then. Counsell, McGehee, and Lopez. Not exactly terrible production out of those three. I also have to question those who are adamant about not trading Weeks. I know he was on fire at the start of the season...but there's no way of telling if he was going to keep up that pace the rest of the year, or if he was going to regress closer to his career averages. Also, with an injury like he has now, there's no way of telling for sure what kind of player he will be when he does finally return. As far as the proposed package, Washburn/Morrow/Clement sounds like about as good a haul Melvin could get at this point.
  9. Gallardo, Looper, Parra, Villanueva, Dillard. Not exactly a championship caliber rotation if I ever saw one.
  10. Well, the thing to keep in mind is that reinstatement doesn't necessarily equal entry into the Hall of Fame. His only way in, if reinstated, would be for the veteran's committee to vote him in. Their are probably quite a few veterans who dislike Rose and wouldn't vote for him. Personally I think it's silly for the all time hits leader to not be in the Hall for an indiscretion at the end of his career. As pointed out, there are people who did worse things than him in the Hall. I think there's even a couple avowed KKK members. I guess I think he's been punished long enough. Would it really hurt anything if someone wanted to give him a job again, or let him participate in official on field events?
  11. Exactly. A good summary, FtJ. I guess I still wonder if Melvin really thought the rotation was going to be as good as last year and was just being willfully naive, or he was just really banking on being able to trade for someone like Jake Peavy or that caliber mid-season?
  12. Saw this stat from Haudricourt: "In 6 of the last 8 games, the Brewers pitching staff has given up 8 runs or more." Yeah, not really keeping us in games.
  13. Nope, not really.
  14. What happens if a couple of those three or four guys you sign to big contracts don't pan out? That of course ignores the fact that "Braunesque" deals just don't happen that often, period.
  15. Hate those Rodents, why do you continually talk like every rookie the Brewers call up will instantly make an impact in the lineup? I remember Weeks and Hardy struggling quite a bit when they were called up.
  16. What evidence to you have for any of that? Melvin is the GM last I checked, not Attanasio. Do you really think he's on the phone screaming at Melvin to trade for Jarrod freaking Washburn at all costs?
  17. He had been in the majors for what, two seasons when they offered him a long term deal? Are they supposed to lock up every blue chip rookie long term and hope they don't get burned too often? I'm not sure Boras would have let him sign long term even then.
  18. Oh boy, this just in: "Melvin Still a Buyer" http://www.jsonline.com/blogs/sports/51931102.html "With the Brewers foundering in recent weeks, some folks have begun to wonder if general manager Doug Melvin might slip from a buying mode to a sellling mode. I just spoke with Melvin on the telephone -- he's been tough to get in touch with because he and his staff have been exploring trades non-stop -- and he assured me is is still in a buying mode. "We're still looking to see if we can find pitching that makes us better," said Melvin. "There's still a lot of baseball left, if we can get guys back on track. It's not like we're 6, 7, 8 games back." The Brewers, losers of 15 of 22 games this month, are four behind first-place Chicago entering play tonight. Melvin's thinking is that one pitcher might help bolster a staff in which too many short-inning starts have bled into the bullpen and caused problems there. "(One pitcher) could help," said Melvin. "When Dave Bush got hurt, it made a difference. We were much better when Dave Bush was in the rotation. So, one or two guys can make a difference. It has a domino effect on the bullpen."
  19. I agree...I think any move made at this point has to have the goal of improving the '10 team in mind. Any improvement of the current team should be a very secondary priority.
  20. I agree with joepepsi's sentiment. No one could have reasonably predicted Hall's complete collapse as a useful everyday player. At the time it seemed like a very solid signing. Hindsight is always 20/20 though, right?
  21. Got a tweet from Gord Ash: "Meetings and discussions continue with nothing imminent." Not exactly very telling, but it's clear they are having some serious discussions about where this season is headed, I assume.
  22. New report says that previous report about the Red Sox was false. All these rumors and stuff are getting ridiculous. I wish they would just trade him so we can end all the speculation about where he's going.
  23. Surprised there was no thread on this yet. http://sports.espn.go.com/mlb/news/story?id=4358260 "Despite a report that he is "seriously considering" reinstating Pete Rose, MLB commissioner Bud Selig has not changed his thinking, sources told ESPN on Monday. The New York Daily News reported that Selig was taking a new look at the ban for baseball's all-time hits leader. Hank Aaron's support for Rose's Hall of Fame inclusion, which he mentioned at this weekend's ceremonies in Cooperstown, N.Y., is a strong indication of Selig's possible action, the Daily News reported. "I would like to see Pete in," Aaron said. "He belongs there." So, what do you all think?
  24. I guess that's a good point...if they could package Hall with Cameron right now, the cost savings for next year would be worth it. I just don't see them trading Cameron though...they may look to try and re-sign him for next year, since Cain or whatever other potential CFs are still at least a year away, probably. And they won't be moving Weeks to CF either.
