  1. Yeah, that's true. I don't know...it seems pretty silly that with all the problems the Cubs are having so far this year, they're pointing fingers at their ace pitcher. I know this past off-season saw a decent amount of guys released with money on their contracts, but this idea that MLB is suddenly going to become like the NFL with guys getting "cut" left and right is pretty silly. I think a lot of fans and even a lot of commentators don't even understand the concept of guaranteed contracts in MLB.
  2. Maybe sitting him on the bench has helped him. Sometimes guys just need a break to get out of a bad slump like Billy was in. I would still keep using him in a limited role right now, though.
  3. I guess I still think some people are overreacting a bit here. Gamel is not being "stunted" being on the MLB team right now. I would even say I doubt there was really that much more he could have learned staying in AAA. He has shown his defense to be adequate already, which was the major concern people had. He can still take infield practice and such before the games. Macha has been playing him a fair amount for a rookie. I would not be surprised to see his playing time gradually increase throughout the season. For all we know, that could be the Brewers' plan for him. The bottom line is that the Brewers are going to do what gives them the best chance to make the playoffs this season. Right now with how hot Counsell and McGehee have been, playing them more often than Gamel makes the most sense. They obviously feel Gamel still has a lot of value to the team this season as a part time/bench player, hence why he is staying up with the team. Also, I can't fathom a GM dictating to the manager of a first place team who he should and shouldn't be playing. Mat Gamel is not the most important person in this organization right now, and Melvin's priority shouldn't be telling his manager that he needs to play one rookie, regardless of the other players who may or may not be performing better at this point. This idea that Macha somehow "dislikes" Gamel is also completely baseless, in my opinion. There's just no evidence to suggest it.
  4. Toronto has now lost three in a row, dropping to fourth place and seven games back in the AL East. If they continue to slip, I still doubt they would be willing to trade Halladay, but I wonder if they would look to trade off other players? Anyone else that should maybe be on Melvin's radar?
  5. Would they possibly do Parra for Snell? Would seem like a decent "change of scenery" trade.
  6. That's hilarious. If they don't want him, I bet there's at least 25 teams that would happily take him off their hands.
  7. I can see the reasoning for sending Looper, but Church has a great arm. So yeah, it was pretty questionable in my view. Also, a plug for the chat room!
  8. The word "embarrassing" gets thrown around an awful lot in the IGTs these days.
  9. More info from Haudricourt: http://www.jsonline.com/blogs/sports/49460602.html "We just learned today that Jeffress actually has tested positive three times under the Minor League Drug Treatment and Prevention program. For "drugs of abuse," which for Jeffress has been marijuana, you don't get a suspension for a first offense. You do for performance-enhancing drugs. So, Jeffress got a warning and education for a first offense, 50 games for a second offense and now 100 games for a third offense. And, as I reported in the fall of 2007, Jeffress also failed a club-administered test while he was serving the 50-game suspension under the minor league program."
  10. I can't see Melvin giving up McGehee for two "OK" rental players.
  11. 15-11 record. Braun - 8 dingers Fielder - 9 dingers Hoffman - 9 saves 26 total in the tiebreaker.
  12. I doubt the Pirates would trade Snell for "Katin +". They'd probably want at least one replacement pitcher in return, I'd guess.
  13. I was there last night, and got to sit in the club level for the first time ever, which was a cool experience. What an awesome game and an awesome win last night. That 9th inning was about as loud as I've ever heard Miller Park.
  14. Yeah, I don't know why Halladay is even talked about as a possible trade candidate since it's not like the Blue Jays are at the bottom of the AL East right now, anyway. On the face of it, it doesn't seem like the Cardinals gave up much to get DeRosa...but Perez actually projects as a future closer. We didn't have anyone like that we were going to give up to get him, and like others said, we don't really need a DeRosa right now anyway. Doug will make a move if it makes sense when the time comes. We just have to be patient.
  15. Right, I had seen that before. While he seems to hint that it was the same issue as before, he doesn't come out and say it. I guess what is done is done. He knew the rules when he came into the league. He has to face the consequence of the choices he has made. I hope the Brewers can somehow still salvage their investment on him, but at the same time I'm not going to somehow feel sorry for him either.
  16. I'd also point out that it's not even for sure if marijuana was the substance he actually tested positive for.
  17. http://www.jsonline.com/sports/brewers/49286852.html Nice article from Anthony Witrado, including some quotes from Mark Attanasio. While not specifically about a pitcher, I thought it tied in with what is being discussed here. "And we have confidence they can. We wouldn't be looking ahead (to a trade) if we didn't think this was a playoff-caliber team." During the offseason, the Brewers were mindful of not going overboard with their spending to keep the payroll relatively conservative, giving the organization some wiggle room to add a player around this time. Attanasio said that still held true, within reason, of course. "Within limits, the payroll can expand depending on the caliber of the player involved," Attanasio said. "With our fan support, we're on the upper end of what I thought we could do here. "We're actively looking at some guys, but one of the (byproducts) of the wild-card system is there's a lot of teams still in contention."
  18. Sounds like the Cardinals may be going after Holliday, which is slightly worrisome.
  19. Yeah, but they had to offer arbitration to hopefully get any compensation picks anyway.
  20. Yeah. You can't even trade a suspended player, can you?
  21. I think you said it as far as how Doug Melvin operates. However, I'd hope he could take a step back and take an honest look at what would be best for the team right now.
  22. Oh man, I can't stand "Immigrant Song". That screeching at the beginning is like nails on a chalkboard to me.
  23. I've never smoked a joint in my life, but I'm not going to get all flustered about someone else using pot once or occasionally. Since he didn't break one of MLB's rules (or at lest one of their tests, I guess), I don't see why he should be punished further for something so minor.
  24. OK, I know this probably won't happen, but would it be so crazy to trade Hart to the Nationals for Adam Dunn? Dunn's contract is not bad at all, and Braun/Fielder/Dunn in the middle of the lineup would be truly scary for opponents. Yeah, his defense is bad, but you could move Braun to RF and let Dunn play LF. Cameron's range in CF would help limit Dunn's liabilities for at least the rest of this season. Then, by the time Dunn's contract is up at the end of next season, the Brewers would hopefully have a replacement outfielder ready in the minors.
  25. Well, Branyan probably wanted to be a starter, and that wasn't something Milwaukee could have realistically offered him at that point. Seattle could, hence why he's a Mariner now to begin with.
