  1. A day off here or there might not hurt. I think he's just in a bad slump right now. He seems like he's pressing at the plate quite a bit. Hopefully he'll turn it around soon because this team could really use his bat down the stretch. Also, he will be getting today off, serving his one game suspension.
  2. It has to be frustrating when you give your starting pitcher a 3-0 lead before he's even taken the mound, and he seems to try and give up that lead as quickly as possible.
  3. It was no secret Gamel was probably going to be the DH during these interleague games. Gamel knew that when he came up. Besides, how does starting at 3B or DH seriously affect his production in the batter's box? It really shouldn't, unless we want to have a discussion about the mental aspects of being on the field versus sitting on the bench during a half inning. I doubt many want to go there, though.
  4. This team needs a real #2 pitcher badly, but sadly I don't think there's anything available out there. I wouldn't mind seeing Tim Dillard get a chance, or maybe bring back Mike Burns to see how he performs. Neither are really exciting options, but they'd probably do better than Parra was. Otherwise there's Chris Cody, who has been outstanding lately at Nashville, though you just don't hear him talked about much for whatever reason.
  5. What's being lost in this is that Gamel is the DH right now (OK, I think most realize that). Most will admit Hall's glove is better and more proven than Gamel's at this point. So, Macha is doing what gives his team the best chance to win...I don't think you can ask much more of any MLB manager. Macha has to do what's best for the whole team, and what gives them the best chance to win, not just what's best for one rookie, no matter how heralded by the fans.
  6. Stuff I've had to have done on my car in about the past month: new brakes and pads, new rear struts, now an alignment. Due up for an oil change too (yeah, I know, it's routine maintenance). Thing is starting to become a money pit it feels like, and it's only five years old ('04 Chrysler Sebring). It doesn't help that I drive a ton (like 20,000 miles a year). Hopefully I'll be getting a new(er) car in the fall.
  7. I wonder if Pedro would have any interest in playing in Milwaukee. I get the feeling he would prefer to be in the limelight of a big market like New York or LA yet.
  8. I do agree that pinch hitting is tough. I mean, the Brewers do have a guy who's historically a great PH in Frank Catalanatto. Not sure why he isn't a higher option off the bench right now.
  9. It almost seems like some people here have an overly personal attachment to Gamel, and are looking for any reason to blame the Brewers organization for his potential failure. Most teams don't just throw rookies into full times starting roles. It's not limited to the Brewers, how they're handling a major prospect.
  10. I understand that he's from that area, but we've heard that all before with other players. If he ends up staying in Minnesota, I'll be pleasantly surprised.
  11. He's a great player who will give lip service about wanting to stay in Minnesota before his contract is up, and then get some insane offer from the Red Sox and Yankees, which he will happily sign.
  12. I really don't think the Brewers are as concerned about Gamel's defense at this point as some here think they are. I think it comes down to his ability to hit at the Major League level, and also the fact that they are paying Bill Hall a ton of money so they are going to give him every opportunity to bounce back. Maybe that's not right, but it's the reality.
  13. I'm thinking more and more that any move the Brewers make is going to be pretty middling this year, kind of along the lines of trading for Scott Linebrink a couple years back. There doesn't seem to be much out there, and we're not hearing any substantive rumors lately at all. The top level starter they could really use down the stretch just doesn't seem to be out there.
  14. Even though I'm not in Madison proper, I'd be interested in coming if that is cool. Weekends are usually good. Edit: Doh...I saw hawing was talking about weeknight games, which would make it tougher. We'll see.
  15. One important difference was that in 2005 the Brewers weren't really contending for the playoffs. Now we are trying to make the playoffs for the second year in a row. We don't have as much room for guys to learn on the job, which is basically what Rickie had to do. I'm not saying that means Gamel should be sent down, but if he continues to not hit at an acceptable level, then I don't think the Brewers are obligated to keep him in Milwaukee.
  16. Thanks to joepepsi for bringing some facts into this. Some people were really complaining quite vocally that Mat Gamel was practically being abused by not getting enough starts...well, he's been starting pretty regularly lately. I don't think not starting roughly 25% of the time is really going to hamper his development, or not give him enough chances. I think this weekend might be make or break for Gamel in terms of whether or not he stays up for the time being. His glove has actually been fine so far, but his bat has been fairly subpar. I know it's only 80 ABs, but he needs to show better consistency in his plate apperances. Sometimes it seems like he's patient, but other times it seems like he's just hacking at everything, hoping to make good contact.
  17. I get what you mean. I guess I'm not sure how risky it would be, assuming we wouldn't have to give up a ton to get him...I think he projects probably as at least a mid-tier starter (like a #3 or 4), which the Brewers could definitely use right now.
  18. You'd think Macha or Sveum would tell him "Tuck your head down and run." Or maybe they have and he just doesn't listen. I don't know what to think about Billy at this point, really.
  19. I'm worried the Buchholz ship has probably already sailed at this point, as far as Boston trading him right now.
  20. Yeah, I noticed in every game at least certain fans seemed to be really loud and obnoxious. They're lucky they didn't play the Cardinals this past week, or I'm sure Albert Pujols would have smite them all on the spot for their unclassiness.
  21. Not much is left, that's the answer. I'm not convinced Cleveland is going to move him...they might hang onto him going into next season, and if they find they can't re-sign him, trade him before the deadline and probably still get a decent haul ala Sabathia.
  22. It's so great that we live in a country so free of problems that our elected officials can use the time and money we've given them to investigate retired baseball players.
  23. Yep, that's pretty much exactly what it is.
  24. Ah, OK. I didn't realize that. I guess it just looked worse than it was, then.
  25. Bill Hall just hit a pop up, and while doing a half hearted trot, actually left the base path before the ball was even caught. That's pretty poor.
