  1. I suppose it's "easier" to justify coming to an event when you're about to make $6-8 million/yr versus "only" $600K or so. Not saying that has anything to do with Prince being there or not.
  2. About ten years ago I had an older co-worker (guy was probably in his early 40s) ask me "What's your codename?" when he heard me talking about computers. I realized later he was asking for my e-mail address. Also, when my family first got the internet in early '96, a friend of mine asked me "How many channels do you get on it?" When I told him that there were probably thousands of websites out there, he refused to believe me.
  3. Wolf seems like he should be relatively affordable and a solid 4/5 type guy. The talk about Looper potentially coming in has really cooled off...sounds like he isn't really even a possibility anymore, for whatever reason.
  4. Slightly off topic...but has anyone heard if indeed all the games will be in HD this year?
  5. Would the Padres risk waiting on a trade of Peavy in case he gets injured at the WBC? http://www3.signonsandieg...illion-over-budge/?padresHe could just as easily get hurt in spring training, so I doubt that will really factor into their decision, personally.
  6. I'd go as high as 4 years/$40 million for Dunn, personally. He's only 28, and would look awesome in the Brewers lineup. Between Dunn, Fielder, and Braun, you have the potential for 120+ homers a season. Yes, his defense sucks and he strikes out a lot, but so do most of the Brewers lineup right now. The more I think about this, the more I can't see why it can't get done. If they need salary relief, they could trade Cameron to the Yankees for a bag of balls, and the salary would be a wash. I suspect maybe Melvin already talked with Dunn's agent, and they told him Dunn just wasn't interested in coming to Milwaukee or something.
  7. Would be fine with me. Amusing interview McClung did on 1250 this afternoon....they asked him about the "platoon" situation he had been in this past season, and asked him if he foresaw anything like that again this season. He simply said, "No. Just 'no', and that's about the most diplomatic way I can answer that."
  8. This will certainly make some of the idiots on the JSonline blog eat crow.
  9. Yeah, and finally reach the magical 60 win mark, too. Definitely glad those days are gone, too.
  10. I was too. I heard it announced on 540 AM this afternoon, and they said it was the second highest requested number, second only to Ryan Howard at $18 million (!). I was half expecting them to say Boras had asked for $11 or 12 million, or something insane like that. Really, there isn't any good reason that they shouldn't be able to settle somewhere in between...worst case, paying $8 million to a hitter of Fielder's caliber sounds fairly reasonable to me. I just think it would be best for all parties involved if they don't have to go to arbitration, obviously. I would hope even Scott Boras would agree, and settle even on the upper end of the difference, like say around $7.5 million or something.
  11. If other teams aren't jumping through hoops to "make Ben feel wanted", why should Melvin at this point? Look, I'd like to see Sheets come back for a reasonable contract too...I just think if that was going to happen, it would have by now.
  12. Yeah, but then if all those guys basically had to play for the US, the US team would probably win handily, and the same people would complain that the thing is a pointless joke because of lack of competition. Can't have it both ways. I'd rather see the US and other countries that actually have baseball talent have multiple teams (maybe an east and west team - kinda like they do in Little League). This would be better than forcing some sort of fake team from Italy or Germany or wherever. Now that actually seems like a reasonable idea...maybe the four "biggest" baseball countries could each bring two teams, and the other "smaller" nations each bring one...assuming the US East and West team (or however they were decided) have similar talent, and one isn't clearly the "A level" and one the "B level." That could also leave room to expand the brackets and invite more countries down the line without weakening the overall pool too much.
  13. Yeah...he's a much better fit for Atlanta or some team in rebuilding mode that can afford to give him a chance at a starting spot. That is not going to happen in Milwaukee.

  15. Right...I mean, how many teams even make it to the All Star break with their same starting five from the season opener intact? My bet would be virtually none, at least in recent baseball history. My big concern is that one of the starters scuffles badly or gets injured, and then they have to put Villanueva or someone in the rotation, which is just going to weaken the bullpen significantly. Yeah, Capuano might be available mid-summer, but you can't really bank on that.
  16. I think some money is there (even assuming conservative single game purchases). But they are keeping that untouched so that it is available in case we are in the race and there is a specific hole that opens up from injury or poor play. And if we aren't in the race, those funds won't be spent, but held for the next year. At least that is what I would do as a limited payroll baseball team.I get what you're saying, but I think it's a big gamble. I would think it would be less risky to spend that extra money on a player now, and better your chances at the start of the season, than to go in with a skeleton crew starting rotation and hope everything falls into place so that the team is still competing mid-summer...and then also assume that key component to get the team over the hump will actually be available, like Sabathia was last year. Let's face the reality...the "honeymoon" effect from the playoff run is likely going to be brief...if the team is out of it by the All Star break, sales throughout the rest of the year will be down, and then in turn ticket renewals will likely be down next off-season. I really hope that the Brewers don't think winning one playoff game is going to endear the fans to them for several years. Knowing local sports fans, it really won't.
  17. That is kind of annoying more than anything. While I realize Torres was never an elite superstar closer on the level of Trevor Hoffman, Billy Wagner, or Eric Gagne or something, it's not like he was some obscure player who was only around for a couple years, either.
  18. Yeah, but then if all those guys basically had to play for the US, the US team would probably win handily, and the same people would complain that the thing is a pointless joke because of lack of competition. Can't have it both ways.
  19. I think you guys are really underrating how popular this thing could be internationally. Yes, US fans might not care, but then again most US sports fans don't care about things like World Cup Soccer, and whole countries shut down for that.
  20. Gord Ash was on the D-List earlier this morning, and acknowledged that they have basically no pitching depth at the moment...so it wouldn't surprise me if they sign somebody to possibly compete for a rotation spot, at least.
  21. I still don't think he'll be traded at this point...I think the Padres will hold onto him and maybe trade him before the trade deadline. They might actually be able to get a better haul at that point for him.
  22. Well, it's just that between this story and the story that was up a few weeks back about how well season ticket renewals and sponsorship renewals were going (plus the new deal with Potawatomi), it doesn't sound like they are going to exactly be in a pinch this year. Yes, walk up sales might eventually be down, but if they end up selling more tickets outright before the start of the year, it might not make much of a difference in the long run.
  23. It just makes me wonder more and more why the payroll can't be boosted just a bit. Everything you hear on the Brewers' financials these days makes it sound like the economy is really not affecting them at all right now. Can the Brewers really not afford to spend 1$0 million or so on one more guy at this rate?
  24. The Orioles are slowly turning themselves back into a respectable team. Would be nice to see them being a factor again in the AL East, instead of just a complete after thought.
  25. Yes, I too would love to see Milwaukee sign Sheets for that deal, but I still think there's no way he's coming back at this point.
