  1. Thanks for pointing that out, FTJ. I didn't really think there was any way Weeks was league average. Maybe league average for about 20 years ago, but not for 2008.
  2. The concensus seems to be that he is not.
  3. Melvin has worked with plenty of Boras clients before, so that really shouldn't be the issue. The big ones would be affordability and potential locker room disruptions. I don't think it would be a good fit at all, but boy, he'd look good in that lineup.
  4. Here's an article someone linked to on the JSOnline Brewers blog, that was generating some amusing discussion: http://fantasysportsexper...2/best-fit-for-manny.html "After looking at all thirty teams and their current situations I have found the team that would be the best fit for Manny. The Milwaukee Brewers" Of course it will never happen, but it's a fun idea to talk about, I think. The writer in the blog makes some questionable statements (like suggesting the Brewers should keep Cameron and trade Hart if they did acquire Manny), but there's some decent supporting arguments in there.
  5. Shouldn't it be more the responsibility of his team to take any action against him, and not the commissioner? It seems like an automatic knee jerk response from baseball fans to immediately point to Bud Selig when anything bad happens, when there are probably about a dozen other parties beneath him who should be looking at it first. I do think baseball should probably implement a policy about things like this, but you can't cherry pick which guys to punish just to "set an example".
  6. Well, the thing that frustrates me quite a bit, related to all this, is that we aren't even hearing the Brewers really mentioned in connection with any FAs or possible deals. Aside from Braden Looper, who we haven't even heard anything about for almost two weeks now. I'm sure when he ends up signing somewhere else, we'll hear how Melvin couldn't get his agent to return his calls or something, though.
  7. Well, something has to happen with the starting rotation especially. I just cannot fathom how much weight would be put on the shoulders of a 22 year old pitcher who has never pitched a full season in the majors right now, and just coming off major rehab. I think Yovani is going to be an outstanding MLB pitcher, but you can't expect him to carry the load, even if he and Parra go out and both have good seasons. Bush and Suppan will both probably be solid if unspectacular (well, I hope Suppan especially can just be average again), but that five spot is a huge question mark right now. If you put either Villy or Big Red there, you are just weakening the bullpen all the more. I've said it before, but it is dangerous to put too much stock into young players, no matter how high their potential supposedly is. We saw what happened in '06 when such high expectations were put on a very young offense (yes, there were key injuries and the Lee trade that year that were a huge factor, too). Really, if Melvin would just sign someone like Hoffman to be the closer, and get the Looper deal done, I would be feeling much more at ease going into next season. I wouldn't put our playoff chances very high, but at least I'd feel somewhat confident that we could at least contend. Right now I don't feel that way at all. My wife and I personally took the huge step of buying a 9 pack of tickets by ourselves this year (split it with someone last year), and I just hope the Brewers don't make me regret that decision. I realize that is a selfish way to look at things, but I'm sure a lot of other fans are in the same boat right now.
  8. I thought it would be amusing to bump this thread right now. So, how long before Mr. Melvin makes any kind of meaningful acquisition for the Brewers? I'm guessing another week or so, when he finally signs some kind of decent reliever to compete for the closer role. This has been a maddeningly quiet off season for the Brewers so far.
  9. Good for him. I hope he can make a comeback.
  10. Let's face it, Milwaukee just isn't a desirable free agent destination, especially if guys have a chance to play in a much nicer climate closer to home. The only way Melvin would have gotten a guy like Fuentes would be to ridiculously overpay.
  11. Too bad the odds of either one being a Brewer in 2009 seem to be extremely remote.
  12. Yeah, assuming he doesn't retire, I would assume Griffey would be best suited going to an AL team on a one year deal where he can DH a lot.
  13. Maybe the ESPN guys wanted to get an advance look at that Twins 1B they'll surely be covering extensively in the future.
  14. I had a friend who had one of those pennants as a kid (at least I'm pretty sure it was that one), and we'd get into arguments about whether the '82 Brewers won the World Series or not. His basis was that they did, because he had that pennant at home. Keep in mind this was long before you could just check this stuff on the internet.
  15. I too, would rather hang onto Hart right now. I think the only scenario where trading Hart makes sense is where the Brewers maybe sign someone like Adam Dunn, and they just have to make room in outfield. I think half of these ideas are just coming from the fact that the Brewers acquisition rumors have come to a complete standstill, which is rather frustrating as a fan.
  16. Sounds like ticket renewals are going quite well too, from the article. Hopefully this can quell some of the hand wringing going on about next season.
  17. Eh...I would have liked to have him on a one year deal, but the possibility of him coming to anywhere but the West Coast seemed remote at best. I just wish the Brewers could pick up any real pitching help, and soon.
  18. Yeah, I agree. Get her a nice ring, but don't go overboard and put yourself into serious debt early on in life.
  19. The other thing is that if Looper scuffles as a starter, they could easily move him to the bullpen where he is likely to be pretty serviceable.
  20. Crewin06, I get what you're saying. I obviously understand the connection between minor league talent being the future of the club. I'm just not going to fret that much if the AAA team is not that stocked right now. Eventually those AA guys will make their way to Nashville, and they will succeed or fail. Inman, Thatcher, and Garrison, while all nice young players, are three guys that will probably never be big impact guys at the MLB level. I'm just not going to be torn up about the fact that they're not with the Brewers organization anymore. That said, in retrospect, I do think I would have rather not done the Linebrink deal, simply because it didn't really have any positive effect on the big league club. Anyway, part of it is cyclical...for a couple years the Nashville club was probably overloaded with talent...eventually those guys made it to "the show" and it's going to take a while for the next crop to come up.
  21. I just got GH: World Tour for Wii yesterday from my sister and soon to be brother-in-law. I actually have never played any of these games before...which is funny because I play bass in real life. Just never had the chance to pick it up before. I played this morning, and boy, I'm not all that great, even on the easy level. I'm sure I'll get better with practice though. It's pretty fun.
  22. I know this is an unpopular opinion around here, but I will never care how well the AAA and AA teams are doing. They could be in last place for all I care. I've never been to a Nashville Sounds game, and possibly never will be to on. I've been to dozens, if not a couple hundred Brewers games over my past 20 years as a fan. Trading away minor league talent to improve the Brewers is the best thing they can do, IMHO.
  23. And the other problem with the way the Rays did it is that they still had bad crowds up until maybe two weeks before the end of the season.
  24. I hear Boston also has been eyeing Brett Lawrie, for when Cap'n Tek finally decides to hang it up around 2015.
  25. Yeah, our second rounder for CC sure isn't much compensation. If you're the Yankees, giving that up to get one of the best pitchers available is a no brainer. It really doesn't create much balance at all. The thing with the draft in baseball is that it's basically a crap shoot as far as who will turn into a quality MLB player, and also that they usually don't make it to the majors for 2-3 years minimum, since the gap between college baseball and the pros is huge. It's not like the NFL where a crappy team like the Raiders or Lions could draft the next superstar quarterback, who has the capability of leading them towards the playoffs the very next year.
