  1. I don't see how a 9 game series benefits baseball as a sport. I really don't. We'd probably see as many 5-4 game World Series wins as we do 4-3 ones now. I really think it would make people numb to the individual games, frankly. "Oh, they're only at game 3 and the Series is tied 1-1 now. I'll bother to tune in when they get to game 7." Then FOX would complain that the ratings are even lower.
  2. Well, if you buy a ticket, you're entitled to use it how you want (within reason, and assuming you're not scalping it). If people want to buy a ticket and leave in the third inning, it's their right. You may not agree with it, but so what? We have freedom of speech in this country, and if dissatisfied fans want to stage a walk out, that's their right too. You are correct that we used to hear the same talk here in Wisconsin about the Brewers, but it's been clear for at least the last three or four years that the Brewers management had a plan to win. The attendance numbers at Miller Park prove that people will come if the team is competitive. We're seeing a lot more Brewers talk and coverage in the local media this year. How often are you hearing a report on Brett Favre and the Packers lately? Not as much as last summer, I bet. You can argue part of that is because the Packers have been crummy lately, and probably will be again this year, but the Brewers are becoming more popular because they are winning. You really can't point to the Pirates moves over the same period, and claim that they have any kind of cohesive plan to field a competitive team. The Brewers have a plan, and are winning, so the fans are happy. The Pirates ownership, have shown they only care about making money, and have basically given the fans a big middle finger. They have a right to be angry.
  3. I think keep him for now. You at least have to bring him up to the MLB level to get him playing time. It would only increase his trade value. I do think your proposed rotation could be the one of the future, though I get the feeling Villanueva will get traded eventually, sooner than later, since Melvin has shown he's willing to trade relievers for needed pieces and replace them easily.
  4. Bingo. This really wouldn't benefit baseball as a sport, and I doubt it's something most fans would be really interested in. With pundits already complaining that a 7 game World Series gets low ratings, how the heck would a 9 game do? I could maybe see expanding the division series to 7 games, but that's it. A 7 game World Series is perfect as is.
  5. The fans have every right to speak up, especially given the new stadium, and the Pirates' earlier promises of fielding a competitive team. The idea that fans should just "shut up because they don't make the decisions" (to paraphrase) is really idiotic. People have the right to want a competitive team. The fans don't have many options, so organizing a walk out or something might be their only way of getting a message across to ownership.
  6. I've never been to Wrigley, and can't say I have a ton of interest in going (I hate driving in Chicago to begin with). I really can't believe they haven't replaced that dump by now. Maybe when the Tribune company finally sells, some changes will take place.
  7. Scott Boras has no place giving ideas on how to restructure the game, since he's already done so much damage to it himself.
  8. Any info on how good this guy is? I'm not familiar with him.
  9. Well, like I said earlier, I think eventually MLB will expand to 32 teams. I just hope by that point we see a true international draft develop.
  10. I'm surprised they're just giving him away for that little. I don't agree with the mentality of just giving a guy away, even if he is a problem in the locker room.
  11. Adding to what I said earlier, and I know this would never happen, but if the Marlins moved somewhere out west and joined the AL West, you could have the Pirates switch to the NL East, and it would balance things out perfectly. The Pirates would get the benefit of playing more road games in their own time zone, and you'd have 15 teams in each league, and each division having five teams.
  12. I'm guessing the Wikipedia entry is just someone who was messing around and made a wild statement that turned out to be true. I heard the same person also made an entry about Chavo Guerrero being a rapist or some such nonsense. They probably had heard that Benoit had went home due to a family emergency and decided to make a joke about it, which turned out to be horribly true.
  13. There we go...Hughes/A-Rod for Hall/Vargas. Make it happen Doug! (Yes, I'm joking).
  14. I could see it happening, honestly. Loretta would definitely be a nice upgrade over Graffy and would be a good option off the bench. We'd probably have to give the Astros cash, like you pointed out, though.
  15. The only problem with that, is that it does make some sense to have one AL and one NL team in the state of Texas. It matches what they've achieved in Chicago, New York, LA, Florida, the Bay Area, etc. I think we could see something if one of the Florida teams move, honestly. Maybe the Marlins move to Las Vegas and join the AL West or something.
  16. I think it's a given that MLB is probably going to expand to 32 teams eventually, much as I would hate that. I think only then are you going to see the leagues even again.
  17. It just means those players will be more expensive to resign. Yeesh, way to suck all the fun out of it.
  18. I was thinking he had, but I wasn't 100% sure.
  19. Yeah...Mench/Hall/Hart doesn't really cut it in the outfield at this point if you trade Jenkins. Maybe move Hall to left and call up Gwynn to play CF. You'd have to see if the Yankees would be willing to include an outfielder in any such trade as a replacement, otherwise.
  20. He's always been that size though, and he doesn't have the weird over inflated skull like some of these other guys.
  21. Yeah, I was listening to Fox News on XM the other day, after the press conference about this case, and they were going on about how he was probably hopped up on steroids, as well as alcohol (because he apparently had a DUI incident four years ago) when he killed them. Talk about drawing conclusions... The media is all about speculation and hype, that's it. It's ridiculous. They just will not get off the supposed "roid rage" aspect of this case, and they don't really have anything to back it up. As far as Chris Benoit...one last thing I'll say. I don't think anyone really has a right to pass judgement, because all the facts aren't out yet. I don't know, maybe I'm being naive, but based on everything I've read and heard from the man, I don't think he was just some cold blooded killer. I really think he may have been temporarily insane when he did this. I'm not saying that excuses it, but the human mind is more complex than some would say. Anyway, I know it's not my place to condemn him to hell. Leave that for someone else with that authority.
  22. If I didn't need a cell phone for business, I probably wouldn't have one. I admit, it's handy in case of an emergency (like your car gets stuck somewhere and you have to call for a tow, which has happened to me a couple times in the last six years), but beyond that, they annoy me a lot. I can't believe how many times I'm driving on the interstate and I see some moron with his/her phone glued to their ear, while they're obviously barely paying attention to their driving. Just so incredibly irritating and stupid. It's even worse when they're tailgating you. I used to work retail, and it was just as bad when someone was trying to talk to you, while at the same time blabbing on their phone. I usually just walked away until they were done. Either give me your attention or don't talk to me.
  23. A good performance on national television could definitely help, but I doubt Larussa is ignorant of Sheets at this point.
  24. Maybe he asked for that song, but meant the U2 version off "Rattle and Hum."
  25. Since Hart has only been coming on fairly recently (with his increased playing time), I just don't think he has the name recognition to make the All-Star team this year.
