  1. For what we'd have to give, major pass. We already have a CF'er who can't stay healthy. There will be far better options I'd be willing to trade value for....this team needs to always balance short term gain with long term gain.
  2. He should be quietly shopped no doubt. If the deal is there he should be moved, it's what small market teams must do. But, the deal has to be there. I realize it won't be rockets to the moon kind of deal, but one that does make real short and long term sense.
  3. I believe if either year was a fluke, it was the earlier one. I hope I'm wrong and he'll get opportunity. I just don't see it. He looked lost at the plate most of last year with a brief good stint. we have to improve at the plate at that position by leaps and bounds and I do not think he is the answer short or long term.
  4. I do not believe Ortiz will ever be more at the plate than what we have seen. On a deep team he is a defensive replacement. It may be hard to add a quality vet at SS with none on our farm clubs ready. It may be much easier to add a vet at 2nd or 3rd and move Turang to short.
  5. My only hope is that the negotiations are not only about money. We need more parity in MLB or they will begin to lose more fans over time. The fat daddy big market teams like their monopoly though and the players union is all about the big money contracts. I have great doubts any inroads are made there and the game will remain rigged.
  6. Think the world of Woody, but I hope he declines. That is a lot of dough for a real risk. We did him a favor with the last contract knowing he would not pitch 1/2 of it. It would make more sense to work on an extension with Freddy, but more than likely that won't happen either. We may need to fill both those holes (if Freddy traded) and we'll do it.
  7. Makes sense. I too think Contreras will be traded at that time. The tough thing is convincing Contreras to play behind the plate less, he's a bulldog. If Quero is up with us he needs to play a fair amount. Pine isn't going to do him any good.
  8. I think a guy at his development stage needs to play near every day. I hope they at least start him at Triple A and bring in a Haase type affordable vet who is competent enough. Maybe Haase himself.
  9. Well deserved. We have a great manager, great field staff, great front office, and as good an owner any team has. What we don't have is a fair playing field.
  10. Without a true cap largely increased revenue sharing would have to be part of the package so that the small market teams could compete far better than now in order to retain and bring in outside talent. Carrot and stick, stick being penalties. But no doubt an NFL cap is the way to go. Big market teams and the players union will never allow it.
  11. Makes sense if this is what Rickie wants to do. Plenty of good heads in the dug out. Imperative that we keep Hook.
  12. This out of balance MLB is beyond perverse, There are a number of ways to address it the best being a similar cap situation like the NFL has. The big market teams teaming with the players union will never allow that to happen. The next best way would be to address revenue sharing in a big way along with penalties for teams going over certain thresh holds. Losing international money, losing draft picks, whatever it takes. You could also provide additional high picks to the smaller market teams. Some kind of cumulative affect, but I think without a cap you need both carrot and stick. Reward and penalty.
  13. Sign one of the Nippon guys to play 3rd (preferably Murakami) and move Durbin to 2nd. Could trade Ortiz if a deal is there otherwise he'd fit in good on the bench. Cheaper than trying to bring in two new bats, one in and one outfield. And let's get an extension done with Turang.
  14. What would Perk be worth? I don't see any stand alone value, maybe be added as a secondary piece with someone like Peralta. We need to add at least one bona fide bat. More likely it will be with the infield abut both would be nice.
  15. Ortiz isn't worth much as a stand alone but he is as a defensive replacement. We hopefully add an infield bat no doubt and it can be 3rd, SS, or 2nd with the versatility we have. We could sure throw in Seigler or Black or Mitchell in with a trade but none are stand alone draws. Might add one with a Peralta trade or something like that. No way would I move Priester with the years of control we have with him. He hasn't even peaked yet. He is who you build around. I'd only bring Woody back with a team friendly deal with a team out. He owes us that much and I wouldn't risk anymore.
  16. We need a veteran presence and it is somewhat likely Peralta is traded. Woody would be a nice return but I'd tread with caution here. Yes he needs a new contract but he needs to give this team a friendly deal to make that happen. Very friendly with a team out clause....
  17. They need a bat and bad. They can't afford the top SS's. They don't necessarily need to if they can afford a top hitting 2nd baseman or 3rd baseman. Turang would gold glove it there too. They likely can't afford that either. They had better be working on an extension for Turang even though we have several more years locked up. Jefferson Q needs another year before we trade Contreras so we don't have much to offer on the trade market. Peralta is about it. Don't trade our very top prospects.
  18. Arnold has done a superb job with limited resources. Very well deserved.
  19. You are right on Contreras, I was just hoping. We have a top catching prospect nearly ready, he is one to watch this year. We will need to trade Contreras as soon as he is if the fat deal is available.
  20. Beyond the obvious moves they need to make before the start of next year the team has to determine what they intend to do long term with players like Turang and Contreras. These two are examples of players the team really needs long term. I don't know if there is any chance in getting reasonable long term extensions now. I think our coaches and the front office has done a superb job. I don't blame the owner a bit for his approach, this is a business first. No owner would approach this team in a reckless manner business wise. The big market teams in today's system have a huge advantage.
  21. There is no player a team shouldn't listen to offers for. You can always say thanks and hang up. For Freddy he's not the ace on many teams, 2 or 3 guy. Will we be able to sign him to an extension is the question the team must ask itself. If likely no then you've got to be proactive. We don't need to trade him before the season, but if a fat deal is there I wouldn't hesitate. Value plus. As implied that value is going to have to be pretty good but maybe not quite what some think.
  22. I hadn't heard that to that extent. It is exactly what MLB needs. Now you have to convince the big market teams and the players union to jump on board.
  23. Absolutely spot on and would love to see all of that happen. My comments were strictly about player payroll.
