Cubs remain a longshot for Bregman. That means the two-time All Star's list is likely down to just three American League franchises: the Boston Red Sox, Detroit Tigers and Toronto Blue Jays.
Houston met with free-agent infielder Jorge Polanco in recent days, according to the New York Post's Jon Heyman, marking the first reported non-Bregman meeting for the Astros in the current free-agent cycle.
A switch-hitting third and second baseman by trade, Polanco disapointed in 2024 with an OPS+ seven-percent below league average and just 1.3 Wins Above Replacement across 118 games. A larger sample suggests Polanco can be a versatile impact bat near the top of Houston's lineup. Polanco smacked 134 extra-base hits across three seasons in Minnesota from 2021-23, producing an OPS+ 20 percent above league average. Perhaps most notably, a change of scenery could do wonders for Polanco at the plate, as The Athletic's Eno Sarris noted rather insightfully last month.
Polanco isn't a Bregman-level player. He's also still a starting-caliber piece, one who should check in at no more than a one-to-two-year deal around $10 million per season. The Astros will pursue Bregman as far as owner Jim Crane's wallet allows. Don't expect a retaliatory spending spree if the franchise's leader walks. Houston, frankly, has one path to a winning offseason. If Bregman leaves, signing Polanco is a worthwhile (and sensible) start at picking up the pieces.
