  1. He called Biggio one of the top 5 second basemen ever. Hardly a backhanded compliment. I don't think James is out of line pointing out that Biggio should have hung them up earlier. Other people have been pointing that out for over two years now. Team goals should not take a back seat to individual goals. James is correct about that too. You are way off base.
  2. Perhaps we should send the new guy the link for BFnet to get him up to speed on the team.
  3. The guys we gave up were not going to get Santana or Cabrera. I don't know about Bedard, but I really don't think we need more starting pitching regardless. We need better defense and a solid bullpen. I think we got the bullpen and hopefully the defense will improve with Braun in LF and Cameron in CF.
  4. You don't think the organization has come to term with the reality that Sheets is somewhat frail? How many starting pitchers would you expect them to carry if they came to terms with that fact? 12? Because by my count we've got 7-8 major league starters, due in some part b/c we expect Sheets to not make all his starts. I don't think the organziation is sticking their heads in the sand at all about Sheets' health. They are doing their due diligence. Had they tried to sign Sheets to an extension this winter like some had suggested, that would be being in denial about Sheets' injury history. (cleaned up code --1992)
  5. Are you basing that on the 6 innings he pitched in the majors in september last year? He had a 4.48 ERA in AAA, that's not that impressive. I don't know why we need a 2cnd LOOGY. I'm not confident Yost would get him in the best matchups anyway. We should just go with the best 12 pitchers we have without caring about what side they throw the ball from. (excluding something like keeping Parra in AAA to keep him stretched out as obviously he is one of our 12 best but it's better long term to keep him in AAA.)
  6. Stetter or Choate? Puke. Is it in the teams rules somewhere that we have to have a bad 12th pitcher on our staff?
  7. Because our window is only open for a limited time and we don't have 3-4 years to find out if Yost is a good manager or not, and the evidence appears to be that while he may be a good manager for teams that are trying to rebuild, he may not be the guy that can get you over the hump.
  8. I'd say yes to this being Yost's last shot. No to Simmons being the manager in 2008. He's had offers like that in the past and didn't want them, plus doesn't he have a bad ticker? I bet he doesn't mind being in the dugout, but he doesn't want the stress of being the man who has to answer all the questions. Perhaps this should be a different topic/post, but I'm slightly concerned that several posters think that Melvin's butt might be on the line in 2008 too. If he were to be fired after the 2008 season, I would think there would be quite a few teams interested in his services. Heck if I was Pittsburg, I'd fire the new GM I just hired and get Melvin. He'd probably raid the Brewers organization of all the unpolished diamonds, just like he did with Texas.
  9. Injuries happen, that's why you have a DL. Honestly, I bet if you asked the starters, they would all like to play 150 games. A lot of those guys had to split time or ride the pine when they first came up like Hart and Hall, they want the full time job. They've spent their time on the pine, now it's time to play. You have to let your bench play if you've got 4 or 5 guys sitting on it that aren't getting regular PT. If you only hae 3-4 guys on it, they should all be getting regular AB's between PH and spot starts. Last year every Sunday we trotted out the B-team and I don't recall us doing too well on those Sunday games. 13 pitchers would give Yost one less reason to give all our best players the day off at the same time.
  10. Stetter is 27 years old and had a 4.49 era in AAA last year and has all of 5 major league innings in which he showed zero control. Color me unimpressed. He'll be 29 in 2009, lord help us if we're actually counting on him to be a big part of our 2009 bullpen. I'll say again, losing him is not a big deal. "Mench was left in the game, not subbed. Jenkins was on our deep bench, ready to help his team win, but according to Ned wasn't in the "flow of the game." Good call, Ned. Besides, even if Yost had subbed Mench for Jenks, would that be the fault of the depth, or a crappy managerial move? " That's exactly my point. I'd rather have a deep bullpen that a bench that's left to rot on the pine or be missuesd. Somebody said we need a bench for double switches. Why? You really want to bring in craig counsel or gabe gross and take out potentially Hall or Hart or Hardy or weeks or Braun or Prince just so the pitcher's spot doesn't come up for a few more batters? That seems shortsighted to me. Set the lineup and let them play. The fewer moving parts the better for Yost.
  11. You have a guy like Craig Counsel. He can play all 3 if positions; he can give the guys a break once a week. Same with Gross in the OF. The bench guys stay sharper since they are seeing more ABs. 40 year old guys have a tendency to get hurt. Graffy was fine, but the time for him has passed. The fact is that I like our bullpen, but it has an inordinate number of older pitchers or guys that probably need to be coddled a little bit, and that's why we should really go with a 13 man staff. Gagne wore down after Boston acquired him and overused him. Torres was horribly overused in Pittsburg and is coming off an injury. We all know T-bow pitches better when he's not going back to back days. Shouse is 40 years old. The bullpen wore down last year because they Yost kept throwing out the same guys in critical situacions because he didn't want to pitch spurling or some other puke. Now we don't have to do that because we have 13 major league pitchers. We had a deep bench last year and what did it get us? Kevin Mench batting in the 9th inning against a right handed cubs reliever. The fewer subpar chess pieces you give Yost the better. All we heard about last year was how great it was to have a deep bench, but I don't remember Yost using that bench that well, or us winning that many games because of it. But I do remember losing quite a few games because Spurling or Balfour or some other scrub reliever couldn't throw strikes or keep the ball in the ball park. Keep the best 25 players. If 13 of those guys happen to be pitchers, so be it.
  12. Why not keep 13 pitchers? We don't need that many position players. Most of our positions guys are young guys that don't need to be platooned. Gross is a solid 4th OF. Better to keep the arms fresh in the bullpen than have a guy like Tony Graffanino around. Why do we need a deep bench? Who on the team other than maybe Kendal do you want Yost to pinch hit for? Prince? Hart? Braun? Hall? Hardy? Weeks? You want to pinch hit Craig Counsel for any of those guys? I don't.
  13. 1 Sheets 2 Gallardo 3 Villanueva 4 Suppan 5 Capuano 6 Bush long man 7 Vargas Long man 8 Riske 7th 9 Torres 8th 10 Gagne closer 11 Moto 7th 12 Shouse LOOGY 13 Turnbow 8th 6 Parra Minors to start the year. 15 Choate Cut 16 McClung traded or cut 13 Stetter minors, he's got one option left doesn't he? If not, no big loss. You don't pay the kind of coin the brewers did this year for Cameron, Kendall, Gagne, Riske etc to worry about or keep Randy Choate or Seth McClung. That's why you pay for actual major league pitchers, so you don't need those guys.
  14. Well, he did suffer a pretty horrific ankle injury that easily could have effected his range. Combine that with him bulking up a bit, could have severly impacted his range one just one year to the next. Certainly one year is not enough to know for certain if his range is limited, but given the circumstances it's possible. Anecdotally, I can't remember Weeks or Hardy making any diving stops and throwing somebody out. They just don't seem to make those webjem type plays. At least not last year. They both seem to play a little stiff.
  15. We're not just the general public, though we're customers. If I was a customer of a business and a key employee was let go, that I felt the employee was important to the services I received from the business I would want to know why. And it's not out of line to ask why. It certainly is the perogative of the brewers to explain as little as they want, but to just say it's none of your business, now hand over your money, is not good policy IMO.
  16. Maybe if the Brewers won and made the playoffs, you'd die in some freak playoff related accident. So maybe you should just go to church every Sunday and thank god he kept you alive instead of asking what he owes you.
  17. He K's a lot because he sees a lot of pitches in most at bats. He's going to strike out a fair amount of time because of that. I don't have a problem with that since he's OBP is high. The big probelm with our IF defense is the range. Prince, Rickie and Braun are all below average in range and Hardy is average at best. Frankly, I don't think we should waste time with Braun at 3rd. Put Hall at 3rd and move Braun to LF or RF. Hart plays a decent CF. He could possibly get much better given full time duty there.
  18. Some people don't get nuance or symbolism I guess. The wierd thing is that they say baraboo, but on the back of the tag it says they were made in India. Is there a big import/export business in Baraboo I don't know about?
  19. Were they too cheap to slap on a 10 cent logo or something? Nothing like seeing 40K brewer fans waving white flags the night we were eliminated. Just another sign the brewers don't get it I guess.
  20. Are the A's really a possible destination? I didn't think they had the cash to pony up for Bond's contract. Bonds is making $15 million this year. I can't see his ego letting him play for less than $10. Eric Chavez is the highest paid player on the A's and he only makes 9.5 million. Besides Cust is having a heck of a year, 930 OPS, and is so much younger and cheaper.
  21. The great thing is that the Brewers are going to come back and win the NL Central. Then they are going to win the NL penant. Then they are going to get to the 7th game of the world series. At that point the game will be tied in the 8th inning and Yost will call upon Wise or Spurling or Aquino to pitch since the game will be on the road and Coco will be sitting in the bullpen while one of our lesser relievers loses the series for us. Book it.
  22. Don't the Padres count as a decent team?
  23. And that was a professional at bat by mench too let me tell you. Nothing like swinging at the first pitch after he walked in a run. Way to make him work mench.
  24. But if they were going to take him out, why not let Bush or Suppan bat? Guys that are good with the bat that have gotten regular batting practice the entire season, and have actually faced a major league pitcher in the last month. I don't know if it's a good idea to take parra out or not, but letting him hit and then taking him out was stupid. That was a missed opportunity.
  25. Its a hard trade to judge since Jennings got hurt. I still think he's the best player in that list when healthy. Yeah, but his health is part of the equation. Plus they weren't able to sign him, so they traded away some decent young cheap players for 1 year of Jennings and maybe some draft picks. That doesn't sound like a good deal to me. Also Hirsh could be just as good as Jennings.
