  1. Why would the hometown team need to offer that much more if the player could not get better than the average of the top 5? You'd need to give up something big to get the player's association to agree to that, like quicker free agency or something like that. I doubt they'd go for even then. You'd have a hard time convincing people that baseball has a comptetive balance problem. Yanks haven't won it in 8 years. Boston's won it twice, but no one else has won it more than once.
  2. He's got an out in 3 years, so I really doubt he will regret it. He'll make some really nice coin for 3 years and if he doesn't like it, he can always opt out and go someplace else for probably the same money, if not more. Is there really a Yankee premium, or are the Yankees just so terrified of not getting the guy they want that they pay more? It seems like they bid against themselves for CC.
  3. Dave Bush had a whip of 1.14. I don't know what that tells you other than they are control pitchers that don't walk a lot of guys and might have been slightly hit lucky. He K'd more than a guy per inning last year, but that was the first time since 2003 that he k'd more than a guy per inning and that might be due to he fact that he only threw 45 innings last year and his arm was nice and fresh. In 2007 his K/9 was 6.91. The year before that it was 7.14. Which number are you going to believe is the fluke? The sub 8 k/9 numbers or last year's number in 45 innings? He only blew 4 saves, but he also had 6 losses, so the save percentage might also be a bit misleading.
  4. The only problem with Dunn is he hates Milwaukee/Miller Park. So I doubt he'd want to come here unless we wanted to overpay him. Even then he might not sign.
  5. He's not dominant, he had a 3.77 era last year. That's barely better than Mota. Hoffman gave up 8! HR in only 45 innings pitched and he was pitching in one of the best pitchers parks ever built. I don't see the dominance last year and the year prior he blew two chances to get the padres to the post season. Why do you think he is affordable? At his age I would imagine he'd rather retire than pitch for peanuts in Milwaukee. He made $7.5 million last year.
  6. Phil Rizzuto 1994. Don't know if that's recent enough for you. Goose Gossage?
  7. Let the brewers hitters play in the WBC, but the pitchers stay home.
  8. The problem TH has and a lot of other writers have is that they always over vaule the intangibles. I would have no problem with CC being 3rd or so in the MVP balloting, despite pitching for only half a season in the NL. He completely dominated while he was with the brewers AND he pretty much carried them the to the pennant the last two weeks of the season by pitching on short rest. Winning a penant should count for something. If too players are even or close the tie breaker should be I think does the team make the playoffs. TH doesn't realized that Howard and Prince did not come close to what Pujolos did this season so a playoff birth should not move those two guys over Albert. Are you surprised at all that TH didn't say something like, "upon reflection of my vote and the rest of the baseball writers, it appears I voted pujolos too low" I mean if I was out of line by that much from the other 500+ professionals in my field I don't think my first reaction would be to defend my vote. I think my first reaction would be, how was my thinking so far out of line with what everyone else came up with. Not that we want to be conformist in our thinking, but if you respect the other baseball writers opinions I would think that your first move would be to reassess your criteria or methodolgy or weights or whatever. But I guess it's just hard for some people, or a lot of people to admit they might have made a mistake.
  9. You don't need to keep your tax records for 7 years. The statute of limitations for tax records runs out 3 years after you file your tax return as long as their is no tax fraud or severe underpayment involved. So if you have a very simple tax return, a W-2, some interest and capital gains, you can shred the tax documents 3 years after you file the return. If you have a more complicated return involving lots of documentations of business expenses and other deducttions you might want to hold onto them for 6 years after you file the return. If you want to read up on it yourself, go here: http://www.irs.gov/busine...ticle/0,,id=98513,00.html
  10. I would say no, no, a thousand times no to Jim Tracy. First thing he did in Pittsburg was look at Zake Duke who was coming off like a 10-1 rookie campaign and decide along with his pitching coach, hey, Zackr mechanics aren't any good let's change them. Since then Duke has absolutely sucked. Now maybe that 10-1 rookie season was a fluke but I want no part of him around Yo or Manny. Strategically, I think I like Macha, who I understand doesn't sac bunt or play other small ball but the player issues worry me. From what I understand he's very blunt/truthful in the media and that might cause the players to revolt especially coming from circle the wagons ned.
  11. http://entertainment.msn....QoZIUaPJrcX&GT1=42003 SNL's take on the last presidential debate. The part cub haters will like is around the 6:00 mark. Enjoy.
  12. Who cares if they get a new scoreboard? They never show replays anyway. What's the point? I really don't need to see the contestants in the between inning entertainment in HD.
  13. They were the suckiest bunch of sucks that ever sucked.
  14. Really, you want to sign Gagne b/c of 11 innings of 1 run ball vs. his 6+ ERA for the rest of the year? Good luck to Mr. Gagne, but we can and should do better.
  15. Do people on this board apply that term that much to Suppan? I think it's more of the mainstream media that does that then anyone here.
  16. Personally, I don't like the thundersticks, b/c they tend to obstruct the view from time to time. But I thought they made Miller Park much louder before the game on Sunday that the crowd Saturday ever got. Right before the game and early on they made so much racket you could hardly hear the starting lineups being announced. On Saturday you could clearly hear them being annouced. So I think the Thundersticks did their job, it's just Suppan didn't give people much reason to use them after the 3rd. Overall I would say that I was somewhat disappointed in the crowd. Saturday was pretty good, except for the one drunk in our section that was trying to start the wave for half the game. But Sunday, there were IMO way to many fans that left after the 8th inning. I know the boys are down 4 with one inning to go, but good grief, it's a playoff game. I'm not going to complain if someone wants to leave early for a regular season game with that score, but we don't get playoff games that often around here, people need to drink them up.
  17. So maybe the term itself isn't bad, it just gets misused or overapplied. It really should be only applied to aces like CC, and not to journeymen like Suppan who just happen to win a few big games in their careers.
  18. I'd like Hank Aaron. But that's just me.
  19. I was in the upper deck today right behind home plate with 3 other friends, and we all said the same thing about Corey, he looks like he is opening up his hips way to0 early, almost like he's trying to pull everything. It seems to be somewhat similar to Bill Hall, when Bill gets in a bad funk, of opening his hips too early and trying to pull everything. I think both those guys have really good opposite power so they don't need to try and pull everything, but for some reason they seem to go through periods when they do that. Corey looked like a top today with the bases loaded. Corey really needs a few days off. Perhaps, these couple days before game 1 will get him back in the groove.
  20. I assume Wes and all the fish are going to get a standing O when they come to town next year.
  21. Maybe Dale is a genius and he knows the pirates offense is anemic and that the Brewers only need 2-3 a game to win. So he plays small ball against the pirates a ton, hoping that the cubs and future playoff opponents will see this and overreact to it, pitch out more bring the corner infielders in, and then Dale lets the big boys bomb away. At least I hope that is what is going on. If we play small ball like we did against the pirates when we play the cubs we're not going to make the playoffs.
  22. If only to drive up his price on whoever does eventually sign him.
  23. I agree that a fan has ever right to boo a team, but I cannot understand why any Brewer fan would show up tomorrow night and boo the brewers. Yeah, they've blown a huge lead in September, but they're only one game out of the WC with 6 to play. I've given up on them a bunch of times this month, but I'll be up in the terrace reserve tomorrow night rooting them on as hard as I can.
  24. I saw BrewCityUnit only gets to stay if the Brewers make the playoffs. Kind of like a governor's pardon. Longshot but still a chance. Not that my vote counts for anything.
  25. So what are you going to do with all your free time?
