  1. I know it's easy to have a visceral reaction to the no-hitter (especially since it was Z, of all people!), but if the 'Stros hadn't lost that game, they would be even with the Brewers in the loss column. So the day could have been worse.....
  2. Just as a total side note, I had to explain this reference to my American religion class this week.
  3. Apologies if this has been resolved already, but couldn't CC have pitched the final game of the series if the Brewers had agreed to move the make-up game to Monday? Or was it some hard-and-fast players' union thing?
  4. Well, Ned, whatever you do, never take out Jason Kendall. Ever. Not even at the tail end of a hopelessly lost DH in mid-Sept.
  5. You could even be more specific -- that 3-2 pitch to Rollins early in the game, with the Phils already up to 2-0. I said to myself, "This could pretty much be the whole season right here." I hope that's not the case, but . . . this was just a major implosion. It's like watching them blow up the Kingdome.
  6. Resisting the temptation to simply say, "Stick a fork in this team," I'm wondering if we might look at the possible outcomes over the next 12 games. Which team has the advantage over the final 4 series of the season? I guess it has to be the Phillies. They have 9 games against the Braves (who they have beaten like a drum all year) and the Nats, and 3 against the Fish. I can easily see them going maybe 8-4, or at least 7-5. The Brewers have 6 with the Cubs, and 3 each with the Reds and Pirates. I can't imagine 8-4, but 7-5 seems within the realm of possibility (provided that they actually start to, you know, play baseball). That could work out this way: 2-4 against the Cubs 2-1 against the Reds 3-0 Pirates I am in no way, shape, or form predicting or expecting any of these outcomes. But does anyone else want to predict how it will shake out?
  7. I see your point. If you take away two glaring overperformances -- CC overall, and the Brewers' ability to massacre the Pirates -- this team is probably hovering near .500. (Unfair to do that, I know, but I am in an unfair mood.)
  8. My big fear now is missing the playoffs but getting stuck with him for '09 because the team "improved." That would be the worst of all possible of worlds. You can't dump all of the blame on Yost for the team's recent slump; he's not the one out there failing to get hits, etc. I get that concept. But I don't understand why the team even has a manager if we're not supposed to expect him to have some positive impact on the team. And I just don't see Yost demonstrating that ability now, when it matters most.
  9. Assuming a split on Sunday, I am wondering who gets the advantage over the final 4 series. I guess it has to be the Phillies, right? They have 9 games against the Braves (who they have beaten like a drum all year) and the Nats, and 3 against the Fish. I can easily see them going maybe 8-4. The Brewers have 6 with the Cubs, and 3 each with the Reds and Pirates. I think 6-6 would be optimistic (2-4 with the Cubs, 2-1 Reds, 2-1 Pirates -- law of averages suggests that they should take at least one). Just guessing, obviously.....
  10. A good day tomorrow and it's back to a 4 game lead.
  11. Also: Just have to take one game at a time, that's the approach we've taken all season, blah, blah, blah....
  12. I prefer "reign of error," in this context.
  13. Does Kendall not present a target with runners on base? It looks like he's just fiddling with his glove.
  14. The fact that Ken Rosenthal suggests that Ned is on the hot seat makes me think he'll definitely be back next year, no matter what.
  15. I am trying hard not to imagine what it might be like watching him manage in the playoffs. (I mean, I want to imagine the playoffs, but I don't want to think about those games depending on Ned's acumen as a manager.)
  16. I'm not defending booing, but I don't understand the rhetoric from Corey. Professional athletes almost never admit that booing/crowd noise on the road impacts their play; they generally claim that they shut it out, focus on the game, etc. But he seems to be suggesting that isolated booing at home affects the team. I don't get it. I thought they were impervious to booing.
  17. I groaned when I saw Kendall up there in the last AB, that is for sure.
  18. Bizarro stat of the year. Maybe Prince needs to choke up, lose the batting gloves, and weirdly waggle his fingers.
  19. If CC loses today, I think I might edge toward the panic camp.
  20. I'm a little bit worried about the law of averages with the Pirates. I know they are horrible, but can the Brewers really wind up 14-1 against them for the season series, by sweeping that last 3-game set? But I guess the Phils' record against the Braves is comparable.
  21. It's spooky to think of having a 3 game lead over Philly, and having to face them for 4 games there over next weekend (with CC apparently not pitching any of the four?).
  22. So if the Phils sweep today, the WC lead could be down to 3 -- is that right?
  23. I'm dumbfounded as well. Utterly ridiculous, even for Ned.
  24. There's been much discussion lately about the Brewers' apparent struggles against quality teams (Mets, Cubs, etc.). Just out of curiosity, I looked at the team's record against individual opponents, just to see how they got to 20 games over .500 (80-60). One of the things that struck me was how much of that margin is the result of their record against three awful teams: Pirates: 11-1 Giants: 6-0 Nats: 6-2 The Brewers are a combined 23-3 against those teams -- and .500 against everyone else. I guess this isn't incredibly shocking; it stands to reason that you're going to fare better against lousy teams. (The Cubs are 16 games over .500 against the Pirates and Braves, etc.) I guess I was just struck by how much of the Brewers' overall success has been based on basically annihilating those three also-rans.
  25. CC just needs to go out and show how it's done, basically. I think that will break this mini-funk.
