  1. I want this to happen, I really, really do. If he were to get seriously hot, the offense could really click through the first five spots in the order. But Rickie's OBP since he came off the DL (June 22) is .307. He also has exactly one HR in that span. If anything, he's trending in the opposite direction.
  2. I totally see your point. I was looking at the box score this morning and thinking about the leadoff spot. I kept saying, "Not him . . . not him . . . not him . . ." all the way down the batting order. So maybe you go out and make a move for a Ray Durham? (I'm not necessarily advocating that, since Durham is old and injury-prone. But maybe there has to be someone else out there, no?) Also, since this is the Vent Thread: Did Cameron misplay that ball in Houston with the bases loaded, too? That's two games right there where his D has cost the team enormously. (I am not sure what you can do about losing a ball in the lights, but still -- bad timing.)
  3. So the question is, why is he batting lead-off, right? Given his potential (that word again), I can understand the club not wanting to give up on him just yet, but isn't it hurting the team to have its least productive hitter get the most AB's? It's just making a bad situation worse.
  4. Mother in law is visiting, and my wife imposes this no-FSN rule on such occasions. Complete injustice.
  5. Now there are Holliday-to-the-Mets rumors, which could really shake up the WC picture. I almost (but not fully?) think that could impact the Brewers as much as Harden going to Cubs -- it could really propel them forward over the second half. They could have a serious middle of the lineup. Edit: On second thought, I checked some trade scenarios, and they seem far-fetched at best. Ken Rosenthal strikes again!
  6. I am in Madison, but I would head SE on a weekend, definitely. (We might gauge interest and try to find a place that is generally equidistant from the prospective players? Just a thought.)
  7. FWIW, I am hearing that the Jays and the Phils are working on a Burnett deal. It's a calculated risk with all of these guys. The are aging, or injury-prone, or whatever. The GMs know it's a gamble. (I heard Hendry talk about this re: Harden, and he was very frank.)
  8. Yeah, it is going to be messed up. The Central will be close either way, and so will the East. There might be a five-team scramble, between those two divisions, for three playoff spots. The safest thing is always to just take care of business within your own division, and the Brewers will have a chance to do that with the Cubs at the end of the year.
  9. Ugh, the Mets. I was kind of hoping that they would implode, but they are looking better lately. So much for dreams of just duking it out with the Cards for the WC....
  10. Seriously, that picture of Marge Schott is the most frightening thing I've ever seen.
  11. It is kind of scary to think that Bush somehow has "figured it out." The rotation would just be sick if he continued dealing like this. Will he? History says . . . well, probably not. But I don't see any way you can relegate him to the pen at this point.
  12. It's not a big deal, but it just seems weird to me that he would pitch Mota (!) in a tight game and then Villy in laugher. As mentioned above, you'd think it would be the opposite.
  13. Gagne? Riske? Neither one of them pitched yesterday.
  14. Seriously -- why on earth do you send Villy out to mop up in an 11-1 game?
  15. Richie Sexson current OPS+: 90 Rickie Weeks current OPS+: 82 (Apples to oranges, I know, especially when you think of contract, corner IF, etc. But still...)
  16. OK, I'm sorry if I have bored everyone with this Whistling Straits story before, but . . . I was teaching in Madison a couple of years ago, and one of my students mentioned that he was from Sheboygan. I had just gone to the PGA at Whistling, and when I mentioned that, the student said he, in fact, worked there, and that if was "ever in the area" he could get me on -- for free. Totally coincidentally, about two weeks later my wife lined up a weeklong house rental on Lake Michigan -- in Cedar Grove, maybe 15-20 min. from Whistling. Long story short -- I played for free. Between greens fees, caddy, and caddy tip, I think it would have set me back maybe $450, easy. The past couple of summers, the student has been in Iraq with the Marines (sort of puts golf in perspective!), and when I have been in the area I have played the Jack Nicklaus course in Sheboygan Falls, The Bull. It's an excellent course -- #3 in the state (behind Whistling and Black Wolf Run, I believe). They have a twilight rate where you can get on at 4 p.m. midweek and play 18 for $50, including cart. It's a really good deal. Anyone in Madison looking for a game, by the way? I am usually up for it.....
  17. I'm really perplexed that the Brewers will be lucky to split with the Rockies' JV team -- at home, no less. As for Mota . . . what can you say? I started groaning as soon as I saw him start warming up.
  18. Seriously, I know. Good thing he's not a knuckleballer.
  19. Yeah, that's pretty much it, in a nutshell. I think way too much about the lag putts, instead of just smacking them.
  20. So I am a mediocre golfer -- maybe a 10 handicap. It's not like any one part of my game is great, but my putting is just rotten; I three-putt way too often, usually after leaving lag putts shorts. Searching for answers, I read this Golf magazine article about how it's actually more effective to line up your putt and then keep your eye on the hole throughout your entire stroke. It seems weird, but they tested amateurs and found that, on average, they put the ball 25% closer to the hole. I had intended to practice this technique a bit before actually trying it out on the course, but I didn't have time before my round today. So I figured I would give it a shot; I couldn't imagine that I would putt worse than I have been this year. The results were surprisingly good. With basically no practice at it, I had zero three-putts in nine holes. (I probably saved 3 strokes overall.) It felt extremely weird, and I was sure that I would whiff or knock the ball off the green, but nothing bad happened. I even sank several 4-5 footers. Just thought I would share the tip...
  21. I guess we should remember that the Brewers don't have to catch the Cubs. They really just have to finish one game ahead of the Cardinals.
  22. Wow, Harden has some scary numbers for the A's: 1.14 WHIP, 92 K's in 77 IP, and ERA+ of 162. Let's hope that frailty is the downfall here.
  23. I deal with a lot of Hmong students, and I have several Hmong professional colleagues -- one of whom is female and preparing to get married. I can't even begin to explain how complicated their marriage traditions are. You'll do fine with asking her father, and it's always nice to build up some political capital with the in-laws before you get married. (It will be depleted soon enough, believe me.)
  24. That's cool. I was working out some crude math in my head, but you broke it down far better.
