  1. They looked beaten-down yesterday, so he's got his work cut out for him. 2 out of 3 this weekend is a must, I think.
  2. I totally agree. Wainwright had a couple of really short innings (10 pitches or less?) because of the Estrada-like hacking. At one point, when Billy came up in the 6th or 7th inning, I turned to my friends and said, "I bet you five bucks he'll swing at the first pitch." Bingo -- smashed it to Rolen, who knocked it down and threw him out. There were just a bunch of horrible at-bats, generally. It seemed as though guys were constantly swinging at balls in the dirt. Even Braun looked bad. (I don't know whether to credit Wainwright, or blame the Brewers.) I'm not a Turnbow-basher, and I think he's been ok most of the season. But, man, the guy is a head case. After the ninth inning started with the K with runner advancing to first on the wild pitch, he just utterly lost his composure. He must have thrown 15 straight pitches that were too high before eventually grooving that ball to Eckstein. Bush deserved better. He couldn't figure out Molina, apparently, but otherwise he was really pretty good. Too bad the team wasted a rare good start. And, finally: why waste an inning from CoCo at the tail end of a blow-out? (I know that there is nothing profound or original here. I'm mainly just mad that I wasted a nice afternoon watching that debacle.)
  3. I went to the game today, and it basically felt like a Cards home game. It felt like there were about as many StL fans as Brewer fans (probably not actually the case, but it sort of seemed that way), and they definitely were more vocal. And are the Brewers running a pool to see who can swing at the most first pitches?
  4. I dunno -- I guess someone has to bat first. Might as well be Gross. Could we run a "Guess the Lineup" pool?
  5. Seriously -- he should pull a Derek Lee. Maybe he wouldn't have to serve it until 2008.
  6. Amen to that. I know there's a trip to the DL thrown in there, but he hasn't hit a HR since June 23. If he doesn't get on his horse, he will wind up tied with Graffy (for crying out loud!) with 9 HR.
  7. I have a book coming out next month -- but on law and religion. (Not nearly as compelling as the Brewers, of course.)
  8. He lit up Houston pretty well, if we can judge over a few games. I think it's worth sticking with. The key is really Rickie, I suppose. If he can get on base from the #1 spot, then Corey can be #2, and JJ can slide to eighth.
  9. J.J. had healthy series at the plate, topped off with the HR.
  10. This came up in the IGT last night, when Bush surrendered a gopher ball to Luke Scott in the fifth inning right after a visit to the mound from Maddux (or was it Ned?). Several of us remarked that this seems to be a disturbing trend this year. My questions would be: 1.) Has this really happened more often than normal this year? I seem to remember it happening at least a half-dozen times, but it's possible that my memory is distorting things. 2.) Given that mound visits often happen in tight situations (runners on base, pitcher tiring, etc.), could it be possible that that we might naturally expect them to be followed by game-changing results? 3.) Could it be that Maddux/Ned are proffering bad advice in these situations?
  11. I'm pat him on the back and say, "Nice job with the four walks. It takes Johnny Estrada several months to get that many."
  12. Jay Witasick torqued his elbow throwing out the garbage. Bruce Bochy said afterward: "He was taking some bags of trash out. They were heavy, had some watermelon in them, apparently. He tossed them into the Dumpster and strained his elbow."
  13. I think many of us -- based less on rabid loyalty and more on a relatively dispassionate analysis of how the roster stacked up against the rest of the teams in the NL Central -- expected the team to finish over .500 and seriously contend for the division title. When the dust settles in October and I can step back from the season, that's the expectation I'm going to judge the team against.
  14. 32 HR's in 389 AB's at AAA is a pretty good clip.
  15. Third place and 82-80 wouldn't be a bad progression from where we've been, would it? I think this would get Ned fired all the same. I don't think that blowing an 8.5 game lead, playing 12 games under .500 over the last 120-something games, and playing embarrassing ball on the road for the duration of the season would be perceived as acceptable progress. I am not saying that it's just, in an absolute sense; I'm just saying that Ned would probably take the fall for it.
  16. I was in Oostburg last week on vacation, and I saw this dude riding a moped with a little kid propped up on his lap. Neither were wearing helmets. My six-year old saw it and explained to my two-year old what a bad idea it was.
  17. He's profiled in today's Journal Sentinel, and I'm curious about what people thought of him (pro and con). http://www.jsonline.com/story/index.aspx?id=644104
  18. W/L is probably the worst way you could judge them. I understand your point, but I think W/L has to figure in, at some point. There has to be some kind of bottom line. (I agree, though, that W/L can't be the be-all, end-all.)
  19. Powell commenting on how lackluster the bottom part of the order has been. Sad but true.
  20. Make sure you tell Mayor Dave of Madison how great Portland's light rail system is. I have a hard time buying into the Mayor's plan when one of his stated reasons for it is that it's "cool."
  21. Much like my dissertation defense. One of the dudes on my committee went off like that.
  22. If memory serves, the JS ran a "notes" piece last week indicating that he was able to soft-toss, but not much more. (Or did I imagine that? I was on vacation, and my brain wasn't functioning too well.)
  23. For me, that 5/14 loss to the Phillies (when Turnbow collapsed) might have been the biggest single turning point in the season. It was sort of like when the spell was broken from that great early-season run.
  24. I would boo, say, Sheffield, or some other clear malcontent, but heckling your garden-variety player who was traded or released has always seemed kind of lame to me.
