  1. Scott emailed me today, to say hi, and to wish everyone here good luck for the 2009 season. -Todd
  2. I sure didn't see this coming. I have no problem with is, depth is good, and if he flops in the spring, he's gone anyway.
  3. This is a wise move, the team just simply did not have enough starting pitchers to begin the season with. The team has no right to expect 200 IP this season from Gallardo, or Parra, and it would have seemed quite foolish to me to simply pen McClung in and assume he could be a 200 IP guy. Looper's not great, but he is solid, and he has been durable....you never know, any pitcher could get hurt, but Looper seems like a good bet to eat up some innings, and give the team a chance to win more often than not. I like having McClung in the bullpen, and then available for the rotation if someone goes down, and I definitely prefer Looper to McClung for the rotation. Waiting was the right move, guys like Garland and Wolf really don't impress me any more than Looper does.
  4. Happy Birthday, Mr Aaron - you will always be loved in Wisconsin! http://sports.espn.go.com/mlb/news/story?id=3888107
  5. I just came back from a nice walk outside. I was perfectly comfortable out there, and I see plenty of ice melting today.
  6. Congrats on the win!
  7. Good luck in Atlanta, Jim, it's truly a shame to lose you - but who could blame anyone for going back home? I'm glad you enjoyed the site while you were here, and I hope you'll continue to drop by. I was lucky enough to meet Chipper Jones a couple of weeks ago - I told him how fortunate the Braves would be if you chose to join them...and then you did. Would you mind having, say, 2500 house guests until winter is over? -Todd
  8. Recently, I met a retired pitcher who was in the Brewers' farm system from 2003-2005. We struck up a conversation, and when he found out I am affiliated with Brewerfan, he reacted immediately, saying: "Wow, you know about Brewerfan? When I was in the Brewers' organization, 90% of my teammates watched that site on a daily basis during the season!" First of all, I took that as a major compliment, but beyond that, it's also a Grade A reminder of why we pay attention to attitude, civility, etc on this site...you never know who's out there reading the things you type!
  9. I like Prince, and I'm glad he's here. Yes, I wish he would get his weight back down, and yes, I certainly wish he'd signed the big deal last spring - but he's still an outstanding ballplayer.
  10. Here's Kent's Hall of Fame Trial, I'm sure he'll get in sooner or later. This is where the voting process shows its flaws....Kent is not universally well-liked, if he was, he may be elected on his first ballot, as it is, the same player with the same numbers will probably get in after 3-5 votes. http://www.brewerfan.net/...wArticle.do?articleId=260
  11. I did a Hall of Fame Trial for Raines in '05. Prior to that, I had never considered him a Hall of Fame caliber player, but after I compared him to his peers who are in, I changed to a yes vote. First off, when trying to build a control group of Hall of Famers to compare him to, I realized there are very few leadoff types in the Hall from the Post World War II era. To get it done, I had to include Rickey, even though he wasn't in yet, and I had to include Ozzie Smith, based purely on the fact that stolen bases are central to Raines' candidacy, and Smith is among the top HOF base stealers from recent generations. I knew Ozzie's offensive numbers would pull the averages down, but I also knew the positively freakish numbers Rickey put up would offset Ozzie's impact. Here's what I found.... S=seasons, again, 162 games played=1 season S Runs Hits 2B 3B HR RBI SB AVG OPS 15.4 102 169 28 7 11 63 52 .294 .810 Raines 16.7 101 171 29 5 11 62 48 .282 .774 Group The control group is Henderson, Molitor, Brock, Joe Morgan, and Ozzie...Raines is right on them in every category, except for batting average and OPS, where he has a comfortable lead. Among leadoff guys and dominant base stealers....Raines certainly looks like a Hall of Famer to me.
  12. George Scott won a string of gold gloves with the Brewers, and led the AL in both home runs and RBI in 1975, I think he should be there.
  13. I've spent a lot of time on this subject over the years, and like always, I have to say, this year's voting is impossible to explain. FWIW, Rickey was obvious - I would not have voted for Jim Rice. I have no idea why Blyleven isn't in, he's the most obvious of the holdover candidates for me, and I'd vote for Raines as well.
  14. I'm away at a trade show (Indianapolis is lovely this time of year). I just heard this news, and I'm very happy about it. It's not a horrible contract, and this man can still pitch. Don't expect the Hoffman of ten years ago, but this is clearly an upgrade over the Gagne signing.
  15. Ice. Ice, is bugging me. My wife is dealing with a concussion....safe to say it's bugging her too. ----- Continued from: viewtopic.php?p=472580#p472580 Original Lead: viewtopic.php?f=67&t=2392
  16. Saito suffered a partially torn elbow ligament last July. This is typically when "Tommy John" surgery is performed, but Saito instead had an experimental stem cell injection. He did pitch again in September, but was not on the Dodgers' roster for the NLCS vs the Phillies.
  17. I'm not interested in Saito at all, until somebody sees him throw...and not just once. I think his elbow is done.
  18. Diamond earrings for my wife, nearly every DVD ever produced, and a stack of gift cards for the boys.
  19. Parity - equality, as in amount, status, or character. Parody - a humorous or satirical imitation of a serious piece of literature or writing. Maybe it isn't really bugging me, because it's pretty funny to read....but misusing these two words probably isn't the best plan.
  20. I wish the Brewers were getting first round pick - of course, but I'm not as bothered by that as some are. If you could convince me that the 9th pick in the draft always turns out to be a better player than the 17th pick, etc, I'm sure I'd be much more upset. I don't like it, but that's about it. What I really don't like is the ridiculous system that will now send a first round pick to the Angels, a very wealthy team in a huge market. It's a good move by the Angels, they got to take their shot with Teixeira, and now they'll get the higher pick - and it's a good move by the Yankees, if the system allows it, they might as well spend to win. Time to fix the system - again, still - the issue in the end is not about draft picks, it is about teams in a "league" having an equal opportunity to compete. Whatever top dollar is - that's fine - but only if every team has the ability to offer it.
  21. I was just trying to work out the possibilities. (It seems unlikely to me that DM would sign Kotsay if he was going to keep Cameron, but I could be wrong; it wouldn't be the first time.) It makes sense to me, I think they're trying to line up a lefty bat for the bench, because they'll be starting three rightys in the outfield again.
  22. Exactly. Read that closely, Doug Melvin did not say Jones will never pitch in Milwaukee, that was Haudricort's own opinion. Tom says Doug told him things might be different if Jones and Rogers hadn't gotten hurt, then Tom says Jones won't pitch in Milwaukee, and Rogers might not either.
  23. George King, of the New York Post, reports the following overnight.... The Yankees and Brewers continue to haggle over how much of the $12 million due to Kei Igawa for the next three seasons the Yankees will swallow in order to complete the swap of Mike Cameron for Melky Cabrera. Mel The Brewers are moving Cameron and his $10 million salary in order to restock their pitching staff that lost Sabathia and likely will lose Ben Sheets. So, the Brewers don't want to pay Igawa $4 million of the $10 million they are saving by dealing Cameron. Because the Yankees have told the Brewers they cannot have any of pitchers on their 40-man roster, Igawa is the best the Brewers can do. Brewers asked for Phil Coke, Jose Veras and Mark Melancon and quickly were told no. Each side expects the deal to get done eventually. http://www.nypost.com/sev...rives_tomorrow_144123.htm
