  1. I have always been confused about birds migrating. Around this time of year, we start seeing Canadian Geese flying in formation and what I have heard all my life is that they are flying south for the Winter. However, I still see geese around in the Winter. Are the geese we see in the Winter from farther north or have they just decided to tough it out? Also, why does everyone always notice the first robin they see in Spring, but never seem to notice their disappearance around this time of year. All of sudden, they are just gone.
  2. This is one of those subjects that comes up all the time in various threads. This is the first time I have seen a thread completely dedicated to bad announcing. I guess I'm always surprised at how people get worked up about this topic. I honestly can not think of a sports announcer that annoys me to the point that I would list them on this thread. I either just don't notice it or I don't care. Or, in the case of someone like Ron Santo, I find it ammusing and I enjoy listening to it. I guess the only time I ever get somewhat annoyed by an announcer is when I'm listening on the radio and I'm not sure what is going on or what the score is. Uecker is guilty of this on many occasions, but I still love him. Class Ueckerism's: -"There's a fly ball. This one's going to end up in the left field seats" - usually this is a foul ball, but you would not necessarily know that if you didn't listen to Ueck on a regular basis. -"Hey get up, get up, get off that wall......caught" - Uuuughhh! -"There's a line drive to right, that will bring in two runs" - and then he does not give the updated score. -"There's a line drive to right and that will bring up Dunn" - Ok, was that a hit or was it caught? Now if we were talking about habits of bad drivers (and there was a thread about that a while ago), I could go on and on.
  3. Link Why is that a funny chat response? Because it was repetitive? Sometimes I think people hate or like someone so much that no matter what they say or do they can do no wrong or right in that person's eyes.
  4. DHonks mentioned him in post #7. Atrocity averted.
  5. Ever listen to a Cubs radio broadcast? Ron Santo is the king of doing that. I find it very ammusing.
  6. I guess I just will always be sceptical about stats that try to predict (although, I'm somewhat coming around to the whole babip thing). Things happen in sports that can not be quantified. They happen every year, every week, every day. I know that the argument is that these stats have been pretty accurate in predicting wins. Not so. From what I understand, in proving the "predictibility" of these stats they take each players stats at the end of the year and compare to year end wins. That's not predictive. Tampa Bay's stats at the end of last year probably was in line with the number of games they won, but I'm guessing that no statistion or saber metrics could have predicted before the 08' season started that they would win 97 games.
  7. I realize it's the Onion, but I think the national media has been reporting this story as an event that happened at the Wisconsin State Fair (Also phxMILWfan's post suggested this as well). It didn't. It happened as the Mayor was walking to his car, which was apparently parked on the street a couple of blocks from the fair grounds.
  8. I don't know that I'll ever understand how wins per player is computed. However, if Prince is worth 3 wins, I would assume Braun would be about the same. Then, lets say the rest of the 25 man roster would be worth an average of 1.5 wins a piece (being generous). So, that would leave the Brewers with about 40 wins on the season. I'm guessing that all wins can not be attributable to one player, but still, it seems like a silly stat to me. How can you possibly compute such a number unless you completely disregard intangibles, which I think is a mistake.
  9. I read in Saturday's Waukesha Freeman that they will be burrying Les Paul in Waukesha. They talked about how a lot of Rock celebrities could possibly attend and how it could possibly end up being a "pilgrimage place" going forward. I'm surprised that there has not been more local coverage regarding this. Has anyone heard anything further about this?
  10. If you are a Brewer Fan I will never understand how you can bash Selig. Be dissapointed with how he ran the team at times?..maybe. Selig brought baseball back to Milwaukee under impossible circumstances. He got a State of the Art stadium built in a hostile political climate full of people who have no vision of the future for Milwaukee. Without the new stadium, I'm convinced there is no MLB team (again, a team that he made possibe) in Milwaukee right now. Did he make a lot of money on the sale of the team because of Miller Park. Yes. So what? If you spend $100K a year in the 5 county area (which few people do), you are paying $100 a year for the opportunity to have a MLB team in your community. Mos people spend much less than that. Not a bad trade off, even if you are not a baseball fan, unless of course you prefer to live in a place similar Omaha or Des Moines. People that live in Milwaukee should be very grateful for some of the "bigger city" stuff we have in this town. Selig is very much responsible for part of that. My avatar is Selig because he is my all time favorite Brewer. Without him, I would not be going to the game tonight with my son.
  11. No particular order *Reggie Jackson - I actually have come to appreciate him now. But when I was a kid going to Brewer Games in the late 70's and early 80's, Reggie and the Yankees were very similar to today's Zambrano and the Cubs. I remember many "Reggie *has vacuum like qualities*" banners. *Steff - Pretty in Pink *Johnny Lawrence - Karate Kid - played by Willam Zabka who also played the villain in "Back to School" -Chas *Roy Stalin - Better Off Dead *Walter Peck - Ghostbusters - played by William Atherton who was a villain in other movies including "Real Genius" *Darth Vader - Star Wars *Eddie Haskle - Leave it to Beaver - ok bit of a stretch, but he was always trying to get Wally in to trouble *While E. Coyote - The Road Runner Show *Leonard Smalls - Raising Arizona *Gaear Grimsrud - Fargo I'm sure there are more that I can't think of right now. edit. another one - Colonel Flag - M*A*S*H
  12. I have not been able to get into most Coldplay songs, but Viva la Vida has become one of my favorite songs of all time. Also, I was just using the bands I mentioned as examples. I'm sure I could list a lot more if I thought about it - The Who, Led Zeppelin, Elton John, etc. There are also some British bands that I can think of that tend to keep their accent (or it's more noticible) at least for some songs - The Kinks, some of the punk bands (i.e. The Clash, Sex Pistols). Squeeze did some songs in a British accent (i.e. Cool for Cats, Up the Junction) and others they didn't ( i.e. Tempted, Coffee in Bed), I'm guessing that depends on who was doing the lead vocals.
  13. I have always wondered why most bands from the U.K. (Beatles, Rolling Stones, U2, Coldplay, etc) generally sing songs in an American accent.
  14. I love "Field of Dreams". One of my favorite movies of all time. Why all the hate? FTJ, no need to answer. You have made your hate of Kevin Costner and the Eagles (band, not football team) well known. I guess there is no accounting for taste.
  15. Do you think he would ever say he's "motivated to move" someone? If he did would that mean that he's probably not going to trade that person? I would bet that just about every GM has traded players that they stated they would probably not trade and no GM is going to admit to thoughts about trading someone 3 or 4 months before they are actually going to do it.
  16. Lame. That is all. It's been a while since I have been there, but I know sometimes people have the exact phrasing of the "password" wrong. There is one word in there that catches people some times.
  17. I'm not sure if I'm more amazed with the sour toe cocktail story or the fact that one Brewerfan member is going to Dawson City in about a year and another has been there just 3 weeks ago. You guys are much more adventurous than I am. I'm sure it's a beautiful area and all, but being a Wisconsinite, when I think of places to vacation, I think tropical, beach, sun, golf, etc....Yukon Territories is a bit farther down my list.
  18. Wait a second....let me get this straight...you woke up with a mouse on your head!...and you were not phased!? You sir are a man. I would have screamed like a little school girl and probably required several months of therapy before I could ever re-establish any type of normal sleep pattern.
  19. Thanks for clarifying. I guess this also answers the question as to why it was necessary to get drunk at wedding receptions in the 80's with bad DJs.
  20. Thousands of movie scenes (i.e. the father/son catch scene in 'Field of Dreams') and hundreds of sappy songs (i.e. 'Cats in the cradle').
  21. Ok, I'm going to totally admit my ignorance and show my ancient age here. DJs use to be guys that played vinyl records. People would walk up and request songs and they were necessary because of the physical act of changing records. Again, this is not meant as an insult, it's complete ignorance on my part, but I don't really understand why DJs are needed now, and I'm sure someone will be happy to explain it to me. Couldn't the bar tender just plug in an ipod or make a CD mix with a bunch of songs, rather than spend money on a DJ? Yet given this, DJs seem to be more popular than ever. There is even a DJ shop near my house in Waukesha that I'm always tempted to go to because I can't even imagine what is in there. Obviously there is a ton more to being a DJ than I am even remotely aware of.
  22. I have XM and very rarely listen to local radio, with the exception of Brewer games. The one they always play during the games that I find very annoying is the Jockey commercial with where they keep saying "Mesh".
  23. Not that I'm responding to my own post, but a couple hours after I posted this, I read Macha's comments about Suzuki in the Journal/Sentinel: http://www.jsonline.com/sports/brewers/50588317.html According to Macha, he wouldn't have to change his swing at all. I'm not sure I understand that since Suzuki is not really a HR hitter with his current swing. Perhaps Macha is saying "same swing, only harder, would produce more HRs"?
  24. I could possibly see the argument that he should only be allowed 3rd base (but that doesn't seem correct either). Unless he went back to 2nd and occupied the base at the same time the guy from 1st was, then I would have to say the ruling the umpire made was correct. Regardless of whether it's a force play situation, you can run back and forth as much as you want, as long as you stay in the base line and don't pass (or get passed) by another runner.
