  1. We had a company replace our garage door opener on Monday. In the middle of the job there is a loud knock on our door. I rush to the door to find the guy that is doing the job standing their with a very bloody arm looking at me in distress. I rush to go get a beach towel to wrap around his arm and he tells me that he needs me to take him to the hospital. So, I drop everything I'm doing (I was working from home) and rush to get my keys, wallet, phone, and lock the doors. I take him in my car (that has a light interior) to the hospital and after I get there I call the company to let them know whats going on and to tell them that they should A) probably send someone to the hospital and B) send someone to my house to finish the job and take care of the van that's sitting in my driveway with the back doors open. About 30-45 minutes after I get home from the hospital two guys arrive in a car, one guy to finish the job and the other to just basically says to me "thanks for taking care of my guy, he's a bleeder" before he gets back in the car and takes off (I assumed he was going to the hospital). When the "new guy" finishes the job he pulls out the invoice to get payment. I ask him if they are charging me "full price" and he says yes. I tell him that, considering the circumstances, I think I should get some sort of discount. He tells me that someone in the office will have to handle that and that he will have them call me. About an hour later I get a call. They offer me $20. I think this is pretty low but I just say ok (I have blood stains all over my garage floor and a little in my car, I'm out a beach towel, I was interrupted from my work, and I saved them the cost of an ambulance). When I tell this story to people they can't believe that the company only offered me $20. So, I'm wondering what other people think. Am I being callus and trying to make a "financial gain" out of someone else's misfortune (by the way, the guys is fine, he needed 8 stitches) because I'm expecting more of a discount or is it just good customer service to offer a better discount in this situation?
  2. Sorry..kind of off topic, but C. Headley made me think of another SD 3rd baseman who shined bright for a brief period of time and then faded rapidly, Phil Nevin. Had to look up Nevin's stats. In 2001 he hit .306 with 41 HRs and 126 RBIs and finished 21st in the MVP balloting!! Tells you a little something about that era of baseball. Headley finished 5th in the MVP balloting a couple of years ago with stats that were a notch or 2 below Nevin's 2001 stats.
  3. Hey Hammer, just wondering how the summer turned out for your son and baseball. Also, wanted to tack on that if you have kids playing sports enjoy every minute of it now. On Friday, my son finished his first year on varsity baseball. Even though he has two years left it was sad, I can't even imagine how it will be when he plays his last game as a senior. He enjoys it so much and it's so much fun for my wife and I to watch him play. The season goes so quickly!! At least there is fall baseball - but not nearly the same excitement.
  4. I always enjoy being able to watch live golf at 6am in the morning while I'm eating breakfast before going to work.
  5. Gravity Watched this last night on HBO. Meh. When it was done my only thought was if Sandra Bullock and George Clooney were not in it, would it have received all the accolades that it received? It's not like they had to put on the performance of their lives to pull off these roles, especially Clooney. In fact, I wonder what he was paid for that film...what a sweet gig that was for him. Sometimes I feel that there are certain films that Hollywood likes to pat themselves on the back about for no real good reason other than maybe the actors that are in the film. This seemed like one of those films to me.
  6. This (listen to the recorded conversation at the end of the article): https://www.yahoo.com/tech/this-may-be-the-worst-customer-service-call-in-history-91851980684.html Wow.this guys ability to keep his composure throughout this insane pressure sales pitch is astounding. Kudos to him. I would have absolutely blown my top...I was getting enraged just listening to the conversation. The way he handled it was perfect.
  7. True. But it also produced Fielder, Braun, Hart, Hardy, Yo, and probably someone else I'm forgetting. I guess I would take 6 years of that level of talent for Gomez and Zach Duke. And...where did all those guys get us and how many of those guys are still on the team? I don't get the logic. To me it's like saying I have a decent chance of having a million dollars at the end of this year, but I could give up that chance to have a possibility of having a million dollars in some future year. Why would you do that? I understand your point is that you are giving up the chance this year so that you will have multiple opportunities in the future. However, no matter who you get, the future is a complete unknown. I know one thing for certain right now, the Brewers are in first place.
  8. Got to agree with the other responses so far. Don't know how many times the Brewers have been in first place at the All-Star break, but it has not been many. So, I would have trouble understanding any thoughts of being sellers. Having a bunch of great prospects is no guarantee of a long run of future success. I think it was 7-10 years ago that the Brewers had arguably the best farm system in baseball (I believe they were ranked #1 at least one year by Baseball America?). So far that crop of talent has yielded 2 playoff appearances and no World Series. Strike while the iron is hot because you don't know when the next opportunity is going to come along.
  9. Ok, well then their taxes would be close to $0 after the personal deduction (unless they were married and had a spouse that worked and filed jointly, or they have an off season job that put's there wages farther above the personal deduction, but even then the taxes would be minimal). I'm not saying that it's great amount of money at all (it clearly is not), but the $200 a month to live on statement does not compute and seems to be a bit of an overstatement (or understatement?), unless there is another $400 - $600 in monthly fees that they have to pay that is not explained in the article.
  10. Bump...was just in the in-game thread and was basically told to leave if I was going to attempt to be optimistic. The Brewers are in first on July 11th!! Not many times in Brewer history that you can say that. Get off the ledge people!
  11. So you would rather be in last place and play for nothing than be in first place and go through a tough patch? Not even close to what I said. They've blown it, they are done. They had a chance to have a great year and have absolutely imploded. That was never the case after 92. I hope I'm wrong and you can throw it in my face all you want, but this is a wreck like few other Brewers seasons, ever. Really? Then please explain what you said.
  12. Is the in-game thread not the place to vent during the game? I'm sorry, but losses are a lot harder to take when the team you root for has something to play for. Can you stop with the whole "stop complaining, the team is in 1st" act. Let people vent in the in-game thread, that's what it's here for. Ok..then people should stop venting!!
  13. Not necessarily. Those teams had very little chance be competitive. This team showed that they could compete but now are just playing terribly. I was at loss 100 back in 2002 (as part of my 20-game pack at the time) and this team is more disappointing as of late because they actually had a chance. I've been 20 game season ticket holder since the early 90's (actually was 13 or 15 games back in county stadium) and this is far from being anything close to being a disaster. Most of the season back in the 90's/ early 00's were over by now. I'm going to the game tomorrow and I"m happy that it's a game that has some meaning.
  14. So you would rather be in last place and play for nothing than be in first place and go through a tough patch?
  15. They lost 88 games and were 23 games out of 1st place at the end of last year. They are in first place with the best record in the National league so far this year. Seriously...you people are going to complain that the sky is falling? Try talking to the Cubs or the Diamondback fans.
  16. Wow..some of you clearly did not live through the vast wasteland of Brewer seasons between the mid 90s and mid 00's. This season is far from being a "train wreck"
  17. Is "Rock" and idiot? "One reason he may bunt is to stay out of the force out"?? How about just to move the guy to scoring position?
  18. Thanks for sharing that splitter, that is a great read! I am a bit confused about the pay though. How does $1100/month net to $400? I doubt that someone making that kind of money is paying those kind of taxes (that's a 63% tax rate and I don't believe there are state income taxes in Florida). If it's two paychecks a month of $400 then that makes a little more sense..however, then the statement that they have $200 a month to live on (after the hotel fee) is not true (it would be $600). Either way, not a lot of money to live on, but the math as described in the article does not make sense. Also is it $1100 per month for 12 months or just during the season? If it's 12 months then the annual pay would be $13,200. After the standard deduction the taxable income would be about $7,000. That's the 10% tax bracket. So, net pay of $12,500 ($13,200 - $700), or about $1,000 net a month before the hotel deduction.
  19. The Brewers needed his roster spot many times before this. Yes, beginning March 31st and pretty much every day after that.
  20. I'd much rather have people "fly onto" the highway than do the opposite, which is what I see much more frequently. Traffic on the freeway is going 70+ and people trying to enter the freeway doing 45...not a good combination. I think there is a way to "fly onto" the freeway safely...it's not so much about how fast you are going, but it's about assessing the traffic and picking a spot to merge that would cause the least interference with the traffic flow (in other words, don't wait until the on ramp is coming to an end to decide how or where you are going to merge). Same goes with switching lanes. I sometimes feel like people have no idea that they can change the speed of their cars by either pressing down or letting up on the gas peddle. People just tend to put on their blinker on and expect other cars to slow down and let them in. If there is a big open space 1 or two cars ahead of you in the next lane and you want to get into that lane, how about just stepping on the gas a little more and sliding in that big open space instead of trying to squeeze in between the two cars that are driving next to you (or slowing down and sliding in behind the cars next to you if there is a big open space behind them)?
  21. Agreed. To each their own I guess, but to me it's literally like burning your money.
  22. You might want to look at the complete game stats that use to be posted by starting pitchers prior to the late 80's/early 90's. Also look at how many times closers pitched 2 or 3 innings during that same time period. If anything, pitchers are more "babied" now than at any time in MLB history.
