  1. Can someone please explain the "draft bonus money" and how that works, or point me to someplace that explains it? I've been hearing about this in different articles. Is this new? What happens...do teams get bonus money from MLB to use on draft picks?
  2. First of all, welcome to Brewerfan Rock hard Brouhard! I really agree with the baseball card thing. I don't understand why baseball cards are so expensive now. Are they that expensive to make and is the demand really that high to justify what they charge for them? I doubt it. I would also like to see them available in the candy isle at drug stores and grocer stores like they use to be. Bringing back a program like "the baseball bunch" sounds good in theory, but I think there are just too many other "distractions" now for kids...hundreds of TV channels, video games, etc. What would be great is baseball on network TV in prime time once a week.
  3. I like physical discs too but I can't complain about my 8 dollar per month Netflix subscription. Lets me find older movies I've never seen. I figure even if we only stream a couple movies per month with it, it's well worth it. Meh...I'm just not thrilled at all with the movie selection on Netflix (streaming). When I purchased it I instantly looked up 3 or 4 movies I have been wanting to see for a long time (Better Off Dead, Being There, Quick Change...there was another one, can't remember now). None of them were available. When I scrolled through all the available movies it seems like many of the ones that I would have any interest in are movies that they play on cable channels like TBS, TCM, or Comedy Central dozens of times a year anyways. I guess I could switch to the DVD rental service, but I really like ability to instantly access movies and not have to deal with returning anything. I will say that my wife and I are enjoying watching Breaking Bad on Netflix. I think for now that is mostly what we will be using Netflix for...watching TV series that we didn't watch when they were on TV. I just wish they had Northern Exposure!
  4. To tack on to what Dean Machine stated. If you are going as a baseball fan to enjoy a game, opening day in Milwaukee is probably the worst possible day to do that. If you are going as someone who likes to party and get drunk (and not pay a whole lot of attention to the game), it should be a great day for you.
  5. Signed up for Netflix streaming a little while ago and I have been less than thrilled with it. Unless maybe you also get the DVD rentals, there seems to be very little in the way of "new releases". Other than the TV shows you can watch, the movie selection is dated and limited. I was hoping for a lot more. I looked at the Blockbuster site and it looks like they have releases like Argo and Skyfall available on demand. Anyone have a Blockbuster account or any other streaming movie rental subscription that they can recommend?
  6. The Badger 5 commercial during radio broadcasts of sporting events on WTMJ. Wow...let's just say that the person in the ad is a little "over-exuberant".
  7. A co-worker and I had a discussion about this the other day. My argument is that what's more important from a fan standpoint..championships or team continuity? In my personal opinion it would be really hard to have warm, fuzzy feelings about a WS title if it was comprised mainly of a team of players that were on the team for a year or two and then gone.
  8. Still have not received ours yet either. Only reason I'm nervous about it is because no one is home during the day and no signiture is required. They just drop them off on the doorstep.
  9. Is there a precedent for this? Could a company be successful in a lawsuit going after a drug dealer that was targeting employees of their company? I agree with JimH that MLB needs to do everything in it's power to weed out every cheater. I wonder how many on this board would feel about this whole situation if was Yadiar Molina instead of Ryan Braun that was involved in all the issues of the past year and a half?
  10. Probably after NBC bought it I'd guess. I will admit I did click on the "abandoned amusement parks" pictures. It was actually pretty interesting (and creepy). I had no idea that an amusement park was set to open next to Chernobyl less than a week after the plant's "accident". It actually opened for a few hours the day after the accident and then was shut down when everyone was told to evacuate. It obviously never opened again.
  11. Last night I was listening to WTMJ 620 on the way home from work and they said something about a storm on Sunday/Monday. It would go south of us but still give us 2-3 inches. Then they said models also showed another storm system around opening day. However, none of the long term forecast that I see on weather sites are showing this. Also, when did weather.com become a site for viewing odd stories and pictures that mostly have nothing to do with weather?
  12. We (me, my wife, and my son) watch it every Sunday (you stated last night in your post...I'm assuming you had recorded it). It's one of those guilty pleasures or ours but it's the only reality show we watch. If there is any justice, Penn will win it all. To me, he is by far the smartest and most creative player on either team. However, if one of his ideas is adopted and does not work out as planned, then he will probably get fired. I do wish they would go back to having non-celebrities and award an actual "apprenticeship" to the winner.
  13. To be honest, I'm not sure what to believe any more. The article states "a source close to the investigation". Sounds familiar. Like "a source close to Braun", "a source close to Bosch", "a source close to the players union". A lot of these "A source close to" pieces have been garbage. I'm going to have a hard time believing that MLB will ask players to "rat out" other players until I see better evidence of this or an actual statement coming directly from MLB or the player's union.
  14. Wow..this looks like it could get pretty ugly.
  15. Watched all of his 11.2 innings (one run, and it was tainted by a poor defensive decision by his teammate last night). Honestly, I think I'm in love. Dude was polished, mixed in all his pitches, hit his spots, knew when he could sneak one up in the zone. It was such a different vibe than watching Thornburg, for instance (nothing against Tyler and his heat). There was no gun for the broadcast, and it's clear Hiram won't light it up, but my favorite part was when Bob Costas was opining about how Puerto Rico should have started Burgos. In my eyes, he is so the 6th starter right now, and I get the sense the Brewers wouldn't hesitate in the least to drop him as needed. There was no gun? I could swear that I was watching yesterday and after he gave up the run (which could have been avoided had the 2nd basemen made a better decision to get the lead runner on the previous play), the next batter he faced he threw a high fastball on the first pitch to the next batter (after the run scoring double) and I thought that it looked like a frustration pitch (just throwing as hard as he could), but then I saw the radar and it said 86. So, maybe I was wrong and it wasn't a fastball (sure looked like one), but I do think there was a gun in yesterday's game.
  16. That theory seems to have legs to it if you look at this year WBC. However, how do you explain Japan winning the previous 2 classics (and getting to the semi's in this one)? Their players don't generally play winter ball, do they?
  17. I hope the next thing the talk about is allowing teams to trade draft picks.
  18. Dominican pitchers probably had to celebrate every called strike. Yes, that was VERY annoying to say the least. Meh..I don't know. While I'm generally a person who doesn't like it when a player poses in the batters box after smashing a long HR (just put your head down and circle the bases), this is a bit of a different environment. I think the announcers were kind of comparing it to a Carribean World Series type atmosphere and stated something like while normally those types of theatrics would be "unacceptable" in a MLB regular season game, in this situation with different counties and cultures, the normal MLB "rules of engagement" do not apply. I guess I look at it as how is it different than someone like Donald Driver signaling a first down every time he caught a pass for a first down, or a defensive player's theatrics when making a big tackle or sack? I am what I guess you would call "old school" and I appreciate the unwritten rules in baseball about not showing the other team up. In a MLB game I would be a little more annoyed, but I think the WBC kind of needs this type of stuff in order to appeal to the casual "football and basketball orientated" fan.
  19. I have a problem in general with what many MLB players make. If you can get to your arby years and have a pulse you are guaranteed $1 mil. Why have a problem with what players make given all of the money flooding into the coffers of the owners? Have you not seen all of the new national and cable TV deals signed by both MLB and individual teams? The sport overall has never seen financial times as is the case currently. Not only is the TV money huge, attendance has never been higher. If the players weren't getting what they are, all of that extra money would just go into the pockets of extremely wealthy owners instead. By that logic the Brewers payroll should have gone up this year not down. The Brewers did not sign a new multi-billion dollar TV contract. They only get a marginal benefit from that new "MLB revenue". If there was real revenue sharing in MLB and no guaranteed contracts I'd be a little less negative. If all teams could realistically get into the bidding for FAs like Pujols, Fielder, & Grienke... then what you are saying would make a little more sense to me. A $24mil guaranteed contract is a lot more risky and expensive to teams like the Brewers and Pirates than for teams like the Dodgers and Yankees

  21. Yeah...I'm not getting all the enthusiasm over this. His resume is really not that stellar Not for $8mil/yr
  22. I always keep my phone plugged in when I'm driving
  23. Geez...you really don't have to do a whole lot to get a guaranteed multi-million dollar pay day in baseball.
  24. I think we are paying for last year. March 2012 March 2013
