  1. StatCorner has Maldonado as decent pitch framer FWIW. It appears he has slipped some this year. He's also generally been slightly above average in throwing out runners. The Brewers' TV booth oversells his defense quite a bit, though.
  2. That's kind of a random cutoff. He has a .308 OBP on the whole. He also has a 1.3 WAR in about half a season worth of PAs. He's done plenty well this year. He's also only 25. It's not unreasonable to see him being a 2-4 WAR player over a whole year, in the next few seasons.
  3. Baby Brewers game against the Padritos has been cancelled due to rain. The teams don't play again this year, so the game won't be made up. Only 4 more AZL games left.
  4. http://www.thecubreporter.com/book/export/html/3521 This sounds accurate. So the 10-day rule still applies until the Sky Sox' (or whichever team the player is assigned to) season is over. The Sky Sox' last game this year is on the 9/5.
  5. Final: Great Falls 4, Helena 1 Brewers Offense Silenced Again Helena Brewers GREAT FALLS, MT - The Helena Brewers struggles at Centene Stadium continued on Tuesday night. The team managed just four hits and fell to the Great Falls Voyagers by a final score of 4-1. The Voyagers have now won four of five to begin this series of eight straight games between the North Division rivals. Great Falls scored a single run in each of the first four innings off Brewers starter Emerson Gibbs (0-2), and despite leaving seven men on base had all the offense they would need. The Brewers got on the board in the top of the seventh when Ronnie Gideon connected for his 13th home run of the season. The home run put the Brewers first baseman into a tie for the league lead, and it broke an 0-for-15 slump that went back to last Wednesday night. Aaron Myers pitched the final four innings for Helena, scattering three hits and striking out four. The duo of Gibbs and Myers did not walk a single batter. Helena returns to Great Falls for one final game at Centene Stadium on Wednesday night. Nattino Diplan will get the start for the Brewers opposite Aron McRee for the Voyagers. First pitch is scheduled for 7:00. Helena Box Score Did not realize Gideon was in a slump. He had been so hot that his overall numbers are still great, except for somewhat worrisome walk and strikeout totals. A rare night not getting on base for Wes Wilson. Aaron Myers has to be next in line for a bump to Wisconsin, right? http://helena.brewers.milb.com/assets/images/6/3/6/197335636/cuts/Myers480_dk419y7m_2sipnwgb.jpg Helena Game Log
  6. Still holding out a small glimmer of hope for Toledo or even less likely, Lehigh Valley. Though looking at the map, didn't realize Toledo was so close to Detroit.
  7. Claimed by the Marlins. Brewers apparently passed on making a claim. Long live Andy Wilkins.
  8. Given his arm problems this year, it may well be he's not 100%. Agreed if he's healthy he should be playing. If he's still feeling discomfort, that's another story.
  9. Dalton Brown was promoted from Maryvale to Helena back on the 13th. I don't think we've chronicled it until now. Sorry, Dalton.
  10. Lucroy had been placed on the Wisconsin DL on 8/12. Great news about Brinson. May see him in Milwaukee yet this year.
  11. He was mostly missing the corners with his fastball, IIRC. Like wichmae said, he was getting squeezed. He might have missed with a changeup once or twice as well, though I do not specifically remember that. Two points about his slider: First, it's not something he should be throwing for strikes too often. It's a good pitch that's only going to be a swing and miss pitch if he can spot his fastball and change up (much like Wily Peralta can't). The occasional backdoor slider on the corner is fine, but if he's leaving that pitch in the zone it'll be trouble. That's true for almost anyone who throws a slider. Second, as Hammer already mentioned, he should not be throwing that pitch more than necessary. Besides the injury risk, fastball command always has to come first. You can throw slider after slider until the cows come home, but if you're not putting your fastball (or change) where you want it, no one's going to swing at it. Except the bad ones. I'd even argue he should be throwing more change-ups than sliders at this point. His slider is already pretty good. Mastering the change will push him that next step forward.
  12. Zambrano's first few years in MLB, he was a 7-8 K/9 guy. IMO that's feasible for Ortiz. Agreed that he might not push the 9 K/9 Zambrano hit a few times. In terms of stuff and body type, I do think they are pretty similar.
  13. Watched a few innings of Luis Ortiz last night. He would pretty consistently blow a fastball right by someone, and then proceed to try and fail hitting the corner with a few pitches. It's possible the organization is having him throw extra sliders to have him work on something, but if they're not, he's throwing too many. I'm not a big fan of comps, but one of the Shuckars' broadcasters thought Ortiz reminded him of Carlos Zambrano and off hand that seems pretty fair.
  14. At this point, the earliest he could be a FA is 2023, so through the 2022 season. If he's never sent back down, it will be close for Super 2. By my math, he'll have about 130 days service time this year, plus 14 from last year. The cutoff can be on either side of 140 for Super 2.
  15. Countless pitchers with similar stuff to Jamie Moyer have done squat.
  16. This is what sold me on the idea originally. Matuella has almost as much upside as any pitcher in the minor leagues, Brewers' system, Rangers' system or otherwise. The injury risk is definitely there, and the inability to downplay that risk is what might make Matuella available. It's important to remember that taking on risk is not the same as being foolish, as long as the risk is justifiable and well thought out. Given what the Brewers already got from the Rangers, why not take on some risk and take a shot at increasing the return beyond what you'd otherwise be able to get? Mendez has had injury issues of his own, FWIW, if he's even available.
  17. Clancy wins. And Suter will be the first LHP to start a game for the Brewers in almost 3 full calendar years. This is how it turned out. Going to guess Scahill gets the ax from the active roster/40-man but no move announced just yet.
  18. You just did.
  19. For every Scott Podsednik, there are probably 10 Tony Gwynn Jrs, if not more. And I'm just talking at the plate. TGJ is/was a much better defender than Wren.
  20. Brennan Price didn't sign. Braden Webb is the only person from the draft class who hasn't played yet.
  21. Andy Wilkins has been optioned back to AAA, which brings the roster back down to 25 and leaves the number of pitchers at 13 again.
  22. If Susac is out for the rest of the year with his oblique injury, wonder if they'll bring up Pinto (if they weren't going to already). He's barely played catcher lately, though he did actually do pretty well in throwing out runners earlier in the year. The other option for a third catcher in Susac's absence is McKenry, but he's 4 years older than Pinto and is very much WYSIWYG at this point. Also think they might give Cecchini a look after the AAA season is over. He's not flourished in AAA, though his OPS is 140 points higher than it was last year and he's still just 25. He's teetering on the edge of a 40-man spot this winter, so maybe they give him a look see. Assuming Hader is healthy, I bet he'll be up after the AAA season. Brinson too if his hamstring injury isn't serious. I'm not sure what to think about Kyle Wren - he's not a great CF and his Tony Gwynn Jr.-esque power does not translate to a corner OF role. But he's had prolonged success in his AAA stint. Probably a few bullpen arms too, again after the AAA season is over. Maybe see if they have anything in Rowan, and try out Wang/Suter.
  23. It's not enforced, it's an official scoring decision based on the whim of the person making the decision. Same as an error. Difference being, there's some natural subjectivity in an error/hit ruling. A stolen base, on the other hand, is easily defined, and the defensive indifference scoring just serves to muddle it up. Typing in capital letters don't make absolutisms true. There's always risk. You can't just walk to the next base. If you could, why not just have the defense issue an Intentional Stolen Base and take the theatre out of it?
