  1. There's no question the Brewers have improved their club this offseason. However, have they improved their club enough to become favorites to get into the postseason? Note: The last option does not imply the Brewers are not legitimate playoff contenders.
  2. Mercedes was in AA all of '10. Stats.
  3. Well, the Brewers have three of them on their roster: Gomez, Dickerson and Boggs. I'd also take Hart in CF over Damon, I think.
  4. The new Power 50 ballots have been tabulated. Comments should be done around New Year's, give or take a week. Eight new guys on the list, and of course, four new guys in the top 10. Also on the list: Jesus Sanchez.
  5. I say he looks like a sumo wrestler. http://www.sponichi.co.jp/sports/news/2010/12/18/images/KFullNormal20101218174_l.jpg (Thanks to UeckerPowell.)
  6. Easily the most underrated prospect in the system, IMO, is Erik Komatsu. Guy had as rock-solid and consistent a year as you're going to see out of a CF in the FSL. Sweet LH swing, good plate discipline, enough power not to get the bat knocked out of his hands, smart, if not fast, baserunner. The "CF" part of his resume is what a lot of people seem to gloss over - he's probably not going to win a Gold Glove out there, but he's more than competent there (or in the corners). A year ago, we were wondering if Cain or Schafer would emerge as the CF of the future. Now it's going to be between Schafer and Komatsu.
  7. Rogers was damn impressive last year.
  8. I vote one wears "13-K" and the other wears "13-H."
  9. If that was the one thing that jumped out to at least two people here, I don't think it is "minutiae." If he had talked to scouts, he should have said as much. Actually would have been fewer keystrokes. Regardless of who told Haudricourt that, they were blowing smoke. Betancourt and Hardy are on different defensive worlds.
  10. Except that "those who watch him" doesn't necessarily mean "baseball people"/scouts, front office guys. I just watched him. I wasn't impressed. If he wanted to reference the collected opinions of some scouts, he should have said "But scouts who watched him regularly say..." Precision is a pretty useful journalism tool.
  11. I'd tend to think they wouldn't go with 4 OF and Mat Gamel, but that works too.
  12. From here: http://images.yuku.com/image/jpeg/88d255a49793ade09af2499efe4d0f6b027303e.jpg It's real!
  13. If they think his arm is good enough for SS, absolutely. But then, wouldn't they have already tried?
  14. Are we sure that the Seattle subsidy money follows Betancourt? Or could the Royals be pocketing it? Almost 100% sure we get it. The money is usually tied to the player, not the team. I don't think that it is a coincidence that the two million we are getting from the Royals equals the two million that they are getting from Seattle. The $2M figure almost assuredly has to do with the $2M buyout of Betancourt's contract at the end of the year.
  15. Yes, I would be surprised if they open the season with a 13-man staff. Counsell and Cruz both have jobs right now if Gamel doesn't make the team.
  16. Thanks, didn't notice that. Seattle would just pay Milwaukee directly, I assume.
  17. I don't think the Brewers would look at it that way. Regardless of how they account for buyouts, I don't think that as of right now from a business standpoint they would be right in assuming a buyout of Betancourt. It's feasible that he could stick around for 2012.
  18. First 25 random songs you get when you hit the shuffle button on your favorite music player... GO 1. Grateful Dead - And We Bid You Goodnight [Live] 2. Moby - Natural Blues 3. 19. Luis Cruz is ineligible due to MLB ABs. Mike Fiers is closer to the top 10 than I'm comfortable with. FWIW, I will have Rogers as #1 on my ballot. Unless he's traded.
  20. Obviously a moot point now, but thanks to everyone for voting. I like these polls - we'll probably put up some more of these on a regular basis.
  21. Updating this, again excluding all $4M of buyouts from last season as well as any deferred money owed to Wolf: +Fielder: $16M (est.) +Greinke: $13.5M +Wolf: $9.5M +Hart: $6.833M +Betancourt: $4.375M +Braun: $4.287M +Hawkins: $4.25M +Weeks: $7M (est.) +Gallardo: $3.5M +Gomez: $1.5M +Marcum: $5M (est.) +Nieves: $775K +Loe: $2M (est.) +Parra: $1M (est.) +McGehee/Dickerson/Boggs/Narveson/Axford/Braddock/Lucroy/Cruz/Egan/McClendon/Gamel: $450K avg +$3M for callups (this number is a little low, usually closer to $5M, IIRC) -$2M from Royals (as part of Greinke trade) -$1M from Mariners (to partially pay Betancourt's salary) =$84,470,000 We're probably about at the limit, maybe saving room for Cappy/Counsell.
  22. Betancourt shouldn't be allowed to play defense. He's almost in the neighborhood of Ryan Braun at 3B bad. His only skill is the ability to hit for occasional power. Punto, OTOH, is one of the better defensive players in the league and also, unlike Betancourt, can take a walk.
  23. There will be a new Power 50 at some point before Baseball America releases their Brewers top 10 on 1/10.
  24. Punto would be a dramatic upgrade over Betancourt. Would fully endorse that move.
  25. I have my dartboard set up and raring to go.
