  1. Link. I admit to watching more than my fair share of Days of Our Lives in my younger days and even when I was watching it at my grandma's when I was 6 or 7 years old, Alice Horton seemed old. When I started watching again in high school, I was shocked to see she was still there, and was equally surprised when I caught a few episodes a few years ago. There's something to be said for acting in to your 90's. While I'm sure her death won't be widely mourned, she was an important part of the acting community if just for her longevity alone.
  2. Early 70's Italian progressive rock: http://www.hollowearth.org/italian_prog/pfm.jpg Premiata Forneria Marconi: "Storia di un minuto" which translates into AWESOME ITALIAN PROGRESSIVE ROCK FROM 1972. Permesso, prego!
  3. Sorry to resurrect this thread, but 3.5 months later, the Dow closed at just about 10,000 after a 2.6% selloff today and with jobs data coming tomorrow along with more bad economic news from Europe, it could end up under 10,000 very soon. Still good for those that made significant investments last spring/summer, and the market even continued its roll in to the new year but overall it's been sideways since fall. Ah, the hazards of investing.
  4. Except that the greater plan is to run a high speed train from the Twins Cities to Milwaukee and it would be kind of silly not to stop in Madison on the way.
  5. I don't think elevated susceptibility to something makes it pre-existing.
  6. Anything that you've been diagnosed with could eventually be considered a pre-existing condition. Without making this political, I'd wait a few months to see how the health care bill plays out before making long-term plans about insurance, if possible.
  7. Mat Gamel is going to have a gigantic year. Some combination of Weeks/McGehee injuries will allow Mat to get 450 ABs and he'll post a .290/.365/.500 line.
  8. I detest Jim Edmonds, but I hope he helps the Brewers. I have three takeaways from this: -A quote from this TH blog on the signing from Melvin: "I talked to someone who saw Edmonds recently and said he's in great shape." Did Melvin also confirm Edmonds still has four limbs? I find it interesting that Melvin apparently never talked to Edmonds about this, and in followup stories, I haven't seen any quotes from Edmonds either. Is he reclusive, on vacation, or just not quite happy enough to get a paycheck from Milwaukee to talk about it? -As it relates to my distaste of Jim Edmonds, I take great humor in the fact that Luis Cruz has a 40-man spot and Edmonds does not. -While Edmonds' defense in CF is likely subpar, I wouldn't mind seeing Gomez start the year and take a few months in AAA. Edmonds' defense 4-5 days a week wouldn't sink the Brewers' chances for the playoffs. Gomez should probably be given a shot this year at some point, though.
  9. I knew something was up with the new Office when over Micheal's shoulder the ground outside was green grass and trees in full bloom. They're usually pretty good with keeping up the the Scranton weather. They apparently just did not care with this one. Kudos on wasting 22 minutes of my life. "Sing" by Travis is a good song, though.
  10. While the Brewers needed the depth, you can and should really only sign so many middle of the road guys. Doug Davis was signed to replace innings from Suppan and/or potential innings from Burns/Villanueva/etc. If the Brewers were to sign another Davisish pitcher right now, like Garland, Garland would either be replacing Parra's or Bush's innings, which is not good bang from the buck. There's little or no marginal gain there, assuming either Parra or Bush bounces back. I don't think the Brewers would go out of their way to move from a Wolf/Gallardo/Davis/Bush/Parra-Suppan rotation to a Wolf/Gallardo/Davis/Garland/Parra-Bush-Suppan rotation. Now, if for some reason Garland (or Washburn) shows up on Melvin's doorstep and wants to play for the league minimum, yah, you sign him.
  11. He likes it to be an even number other than zero. Then why is his uniform number 60?
  12. With Narveson and Parra out of options and one or two of Narveson/Suppan/Bush probably ending up in the bullpen, I'd like to see Villanueva sent to AAA and stretched out as a starter. They'll need a 8th starter at some point this season, and Villanueva wouldn't be a bad option, assuming he'd been starting all along in AAA, imo.
  13. I agree with Casey. WHIP means more to me at the extremes. WHIPs between say 1.1-1.6 seem pretty nebulous to me. If you tell me a guy has a 1.25 WHIP or a 1.43 WHIP, that doesn't mean much unless it has context with other information. Even then, it's more of a secondary than primary stat. Now if you tell me a guy has a 0.8 WHIP or a 2.0 WHIP (and a decent sample of innings), I pretty much know what kind of pitcher he is. Davis has survived with a high WHIP, and has had success with a high WHIP. There's probably some detailed reason as to why this is, but in just looking at his statistical record, I'm confident that he'll continue to both have a higher than is normally viewed as good WHIP and decent results.
  14. Davis isn't a world beater, but he's going to make the Brewers' rotation better and barring major injury will more than likely outperform his contract over the next two years. It's a good deal, and depth the Brewers needed.
  15. FWIW. the Twins and JJ Hardy have agreed on a 1 year/$5 mil contract.
  16. Jody Gerut gets his own thread, Gomez might as well get his own thread. Per McCalvy, he avoids arby with a contract unknown, but I'm sure we'll hear contract details later on. My guess is $750K. Edit: Added terms to title --cc
  17. I wouldn't be surprised at all to see the Brewers sign Byrnes to a minimum-salary or minor league deal. It would seem to fit into their Gerut/Kapler type pattern of aquisitions. Byrnes fits in nicely as a backup with Gerut. Byrnes will likely have a handful of cheap make-good deals to choose from, so he'll decide where he wants to go.
  18. Looks like Colby Lewis will sign a 2-year deal with the Rangers.
  19. 100% of battlekow's salary is deferred to sometime in the mid next century.
  20. Schafer is by most accounts a solid to above average defender in center field, with a solid arm. His defense is a lot like his offense... nothing he does blows you away, but he does a lot of things well. 2010 will be a big year for him. My biggest question about Schafer is, will he start taking more walks so he can become a top of the order guy? His AB:BB has regularly been below the desired 10:1 ratio. That needs to improve without sacrificing a lot of power.
  21. The Brewers are sitting down with Mulder and his agent today. I'd expect a signing in the next couple of days. Rick Peterson already went out of his way to praise Mulder, saying he's healthy and just has to get his mechanics back in order. As for Bedard, I know no one is going to give him $8-10 mil guaranteed, but I'd bet someone would be willing to give him at least $1-2 mil more than what the Brewers could offer.
  22. According to McCalvy, the deal includes an invite to spring training.
  23. Already mentioned in the minor league forum.
  24. The only way the Brewers get Bedard is if he a)really, really wants to sign here because b)he'd have to settle for a low base salary ($2-4 mil), with a lot of incentives based on innings pitched, the payment of some of which might have to be deferred to 2011. Or, sign a deal that doesn't pay a lot this year, but includes a lucrative 2011 option that vests based on innings pitched. I'm all for signing Bedard. Any innings you get out of him will most likely be very good innings. I just don't think the Brewers are in a position to give him much money up front because who knows how many innings he'll actually give you.
  25. Scarpetta will get 4 option years, so he goes into spring with 3 options left. It's like they added him this year. If he pitches well in Brevard, he'll finish the year in at least AA - he's still well on track, and won't have to be rushed.
