  1. Heether was going to be a minor league free agent, but when a player is added to the 40-man they immediately come under major league free agency guidelines, and Heether is obviously still well short of six years of big league service. He now has three option years, so he can stay in the minors through at least 2012.
  2. Braddock was scheduled to pitch yesterday... if we were on the roster, he wouldn't be available to pitch.
  3. This isn't exactly true... we saved whatever Hardy would have made in arbitration minus whatever Gomez will make in arbitration. The decision on Cameron is at least a partially separate issue. Having Gomez on the roster does not by itself preclude Cameron from being on the roster also. I know Melvin said they wouldn't pursue Cameron this offseason, but it wouldn't be the biggest waste of resources to have Cameron back and let Gomez work on things in AAA for a year.
  4. Link. Not too surprising... he wasn't that great down the stretch for the Brewers. What is everyone's favorite David Weathers memory?
  5. I assume this also means we won't offer Cam arby, unless there's a handshake agreement to decline it.
  6. I'm not taking a personal shot at Hermida (or as you say, diss him), I just think he's a defensive liability. It's ok that I have that opinion. You can have a different opinion. No need to get worked up. I consider someone to be a liability when they are below average at a skill. Hermida's average UZR/150 from 2006-2009, which basically encompases 4 full seasons, is -7.0. Fangraphs also has his arm an average 1.8 runs below average during that same time period. Tangotiger's 2008 Fan Scouting Reports has him as below average - that's based on the eyeballs of a bunch of casual baseball fans who watched Hermida. I did a google search for Hermida's defense and most things I found pegged Hermida at somewhere between average and below average. The Red Sox themselves say he's average. Though I only looked at about 12 different blurbs, I failed to find one mention of "above average" defense. And yes, fielding percentage isn't a good stat all by itself. In my opinion, he's below average. Hermida should benefit from playing half his games at Fenway, but then again, who doesn't? It's a fine low risk move by the Red Sox who can easily absorb Hermida's salary. I guess I would have been ok with the Brewers getting him, but only contingent on Hart being traded for pitching. The Brewers could not have easily afforded Hermida's contract on the bench.
  7. Would it surprise you to know that Tim Lincecum is IN Jeremy Jeffress' posse?
  8. I don't think this is any great coup by the Red Sox. There was a lot of speculation that Hermida was going to be non-tendered given his price tag and lack of production at the plate and his liability on the defensive end. The Sox didn't give up much, but considering they might have been able to get him for nothing in about a month, that's about all they should have given up.
  9. I agree, trwi... the pool of teams that don't have to give up a pick to sign him increased from 1 (the Brewers) to 30. The Brewers get slightly hosed on compensation again with Lopez slipping from A to B. But... he's probably worth the money if he comes back so I'd be a little surprised if they didn't offer him arby, especially now.
  10. RIP the 2009 baseball season. May 2010 not end the same way.
  11. Might as well keep this thread going: Bosio hired as advance scout. The Brewers must have been one of the few teams without an advance scout the past few years. I realize it's kind of an archaic position what with video scouting, but I it's still nice to lend the human touch.
  12. An old album, but new to me: http://www.classicrockmagazine.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/10/wishbone-ash-argus-remastered-revisited.jpg Groovin'. Somewhere between Crosby Stills & Nash, Lynyrd Skynyrd and Jethro Tull (sans flute).
  13. Ridding the roster of Suppan in favor of inserting Matthews on to it provides flexibility? It's swapping out a boondoggle contract for an even longer boondoggle contract. If the Angels offered to pay nearly all of the $8.5 million difference, sure, but if not... why would we pay that much for Gary Matthews? And why would they pay that much for Jeff Suppan? I'd rather have the extra pitcher than the extra outfielder anyway. As for his production, it would be modest (maybe even with a capital M), and once again... his defense isn't what it used to be.
  14. Matthews' average UZR for the previous three seasons is -13.1... he used to be a good defender, but it seems that age and injury have significantly erroded his skills. And speaking of injury and errosion of skill, Matthews has had a nearly linear drop in ABs per year from 2006-2009: 620, 516, 426, 316. Matthews had a decent year at age 27, and then a couple years of decent production and one year of very good production playing half his games in Arlington. He might be ok as a backup, but I would trust neither his bat or defense, nor his ability to stay on the field, in a starting role.
  15. This has already been said, but trading Suppan for Matthews would be like trading Suppan for the hitting version of Suppan and extending his contract for a year. No thank you.
  16. I would not doubt that Chuck is Scott Kazmir, trying to draw more attention to himself.
  17. Washburn hasn't seen 200 innings since 2003 and has posted a FIP below 4.50 once since 2002. He's slightly better at pitching than Suppan. If we get him cheap and plug him in to the #4 or #5 spot, that's ok. If he's the best starter we get the offseason, Melvin isn't trying hard enough. If Melvin gives him much more than $5 or 6 million per year and more than 2 years, Melvin needs to have his head examined.
  18. He'll be eligible for the Rule 5 draft unless the Brewers add him to the 40-man roster.
  19. Lucroy nails another would-be base stealer. It's to the point where there should be a reason why Wooten hasn't pitched. I wonder if an intrepid beat reporter would care to delve in to the issue?
  20. "We will meet in January in Phoenix with all of our pitching coaches and medical personnel in what I will call a pitching symposium to review and possibly amend our pitching program for 2010." I kind of wonder why they are waiting until January... that's well in to the free agency period, past the winter meetings, past the time the new Dominican camp opens, and not much more than a month before spring training opens. This seems like kind of important thing - why not get it taken care of once you have your staff together?
  21. Jones' signing has already been mentioned in the newly christened Offseason Transaction Thread. Closing this thread in lieu of that one.
  22. More praise for D'Vontrey Richardson at the tail end of the chat... seems his name pops up whenever anyone asks about standout player. Richardson is going to have a lot of work to do in 2010 to live up to all the Bucci-esque praise he's been getting.
  23. I've been watching the Angels-Yankees game for about 2 minutes and Tim McCarver has already unleashed these two statements, both about Rod Carew: "He's one of the few players to have his number retired by the Minnesota Twins and the Angels." "He used to steal home... from third."
  24. Green played third a few days ago.
