  1. I was pumped when they signed him to a minor league deal - I'm surprised he didn't get a shot at the big league club in spring training. Smith has never been a highly regarded prospect but he's put up solid numbers, especially in relief. I fully expect to see him given a shot in Milwaukee sometime this year. If the Brewers want to send a message that walks aren't ok for pitchers, this might be the poster boy for some more command in the pen. DeFelice I see your DeFelice and raise you a Smeth.
  2. The basic OBP formula is (H+BB+HBP)/(AB+BB+HBP+SF) - however, I've seen more elaborate versions of OBP. An old Bill James article I used to have calculated OBP as something like (H+BB+HPB)/(AB+BB+IBB+HBP+SF+CI). I think the logic behind not crediting OBP on an intentional walk is that it takes no effort on the batter's part to reach base on an IBB... even with a HBP, you have to get hit in the body with a ball.
  3. You're assuming that if we're in a position to pick up Looper's option, he's going to make it mutual. Even with Looper, I only have us at around $84 mil. With a successful season, we'd have room for Cameron.
  4. Pedro Lambertus gets demoted while Liam Ohlmann and his Manzanillo-esque walk rate gets to stay in Wisconsin? Hmm. I'd like to know what pictures Brett Whiteside has of Reid Nichols. If Santo Manzanillo had those pictures, he'd be in Nashville by now. I'd be all for Kevin Melillo's promotion to AAA, if it didn't mean Heether getting that many fewer AB's. Heether is getting seriously screwed. Mat Gamel is sick, and so is Chris Smith. I helped start the Gamel bandwagon when he was drafted, and I'm getting the Smith bandwagon rolling right now. New DiFelice, same as the old DiFelice.
  5. The performance of that OF would swing on Hart's play in CF. Gillespie is a good left fielder, and Braun has the skills to be a good right fielder. Hart's effort in the field has been lacking at some points, and I'd rather not have a lacking performance in the middle of the outfield. So, I'd rather have Cain healthy than trust Hart in center, all things being equal. Short of that, I'd just assume sign Cameron for another year if he's amenable.
  6. Mark DiFelice is an all-star... seriously, put him in the rotation and call up Chris Smith to take his place in the pen.
  7. Jeff Suppan's gross pay at the end of the day: ~$1,297,814 Yovani Gallardo's gross pay at the end of the day: ~$42,984 Hmm.
  8. Funny, funny episode. My favorite part was the Korean woman getting into the van after they realized they were broke... Pam's reaction to it was spot on. Pam has been great all season actually.
  9. I used to like Amy Poehler, especially on Weekend Update. Evidently it's quite possible to get too much Amy Poehler. This is it. There have been funny spots, but these would be three weak Office episodes.
  10. If he performs well in AA, they might promote him as a reward. But he's going to be limited to around 130 innings this year, so there's no rush to promote him if he doesn't really deserve it.
  11. Being discussed in the minor league transaction thread here.
  12. Chris Narveson is a talented pitcher. He could make a good bullpen addition to the big club if he takes to full time relief. I hope they don't mess around with him and move him back to the rotation. Kevin Melillo has a career .370 OBP and 840 OPS. He's not yet 27... if he can play good defense (I have no idea), he might be valuable. He has enough power to be useful, certainly. I wish Logan Schafer would walk a little more. Zelous Wheeler is off to one of the best starts in the system. If memory recalls, he got off to a hot start last year also, before gradually fading to an ok final line. Evan Anundsen is a horse and Brandon Rapoza is a reliever to watch.
  13. How about Carlos Corporan getting in the top 50 for once? I am proud to say I put him at #43 on my personal Power 50. Not quite enough to get him in the official one... He's a great defensive worker. If his bat can hold up, he might have a career as a backup. Then again, that's true of about 20 AAA catchers. Poor Dennis... off again. I'm with Battlekow, I kind of like Wheeler as well. Dennis didn't make the Appleton roster... that's a letdown. He's only 20. It's not the end of the world. I think he'll see some time in Appleton this year. Depending on the development of Arias, Garcia, Abreu, McPherson and Barrini (plus whoever is drafted), they might have to push him to Appleton just to clear some room. Koshansky is like brendan katin, but a much, much better hitter... Koshansky has had mostly borderline MLEs and he'll be 27 by the end of May. He walks some, but not at a rate where it would translate really well to MLB. He's good AAA depth, but I wouldn't call him a prospect at this point. Maybe if he tears up the PCL whilst his home park is in Nashville. Moving Almonte to A+ ball at age 22 is simply putting him where he needs to be. I think part of it is fascination with the (mostly) unknown. The guy puts up remarkable stats out of nowhere last year, and is promoted suddenly to Brevard. Skipping two levels to class A+ rarely happens. I'm struggling to think of the last time that it did at the beginning of the season. While he may be there at the right age, the experience wouldn't necessarily warrent the promotion.
  14. Swindle played in the minor leagues for Philly in 2007 and 2008, and pitched briefly for Philly in the majors last year.
  15. It is up. Joe Koshansky ftw?
  16. It'll be up by 3 pm CDT, if not a little earlier. I had to take a break to have lunch with my fiance. Until then, here are numbers 51-55: 51. Rigo Almonte 52. Nick Tyson 53. Brock Kjeldgaard 54. Hitaniel Arias 55. Zelous Wheeler
  17. Brett Lawrie hit for the cycle in his first four career hits.
  18. The first Power 50 of the 2009 season will go online a little after noon tomorrow, 4/15. Where will Joe Koshansky debut?
  19. I hate to say it again, but that Huntsville lineup makes me want to avert my eyes. How do Fermaint and Perez go from sucking in Brevard last year to starting in Huntsville this year?
  20. They might have him in extended spring training working on things until the weather gets warmer in Appleton, or just working on things until Helena starts up. I like a slower pace with high school pitchers, so I'm a fan of leaving Odorizzi, Lintz, Lasker, Billings, Krestalude and Wawrzasek in Arizona. If anyone out of that group does get called up to Wisconsin before Helena begins, I imagine it would be Odorizzi or Wawrzasek first.
  21. Koyie Hill, expect a letter from the commissioner's office. What a temper tantrum... Weeks was safe and it wasn't even close.
  22. Have to say, that's one of the worst AA squads the Brewers have fielded in quite some time. With Cain, Aguilar and Periard on the DL, it is Jeffress, Lucroy and not much else top end talent.
  23. I'm cautiously optimistic about 13-14 wins, but I'll say 12-10.
