  1. Well, Dad, thanks for inflicting me with the glorious disease that is baseball. The small one is already on his way; given a choice between some skull scraping inanity on Noggin and the Sox/Rays game last night, he cried for baseball. When the Rays won he tried to shower me with juice. He is 2 and a half. Tonight he asked "No baseball?" The first game I remember was a Reds game at old Riverfront. I was, 4? We sat in the upper deck and froze, but it was Reds jacket day. I just remember the hugeness of the place. Same stadium 23 years later in 2002, and I had a 10 minute conversation with Ray King over the right field wall before the game. Unlike the Cubs fans crushing their hats and swearing off baseball, I'm never walking away. Even in spite of the fact the Brewers playoff shirts I ordered 10 minutes after clinching for overnight delivery arrived...today. Eh, I have something to wear next year.
  2. I'll answer the question: Torres' request to sacrifice a live chicken should have been granted.
  3. I put my 2.5 year old in his baseball jammies for luck. He has been sick today. The poor kid; he ain't takin those jammies off again. I was 7 the last time. My Dad took me to a WS game and inflicted me with the unfortunate lifelong love of baseball. I love life today. Guess what, we did keep the seats warm, now lets go to Philly and take a couple of pounds of flesh!
  4. Well, they got him for less than CoCo money. Meethinks the wage for starters who don't blow off thier own foot will be going up and up and up. We're paying Suppan 10mil a year to basically not be a failure. Heck, we are paying Gagne 10 mil to BE one. Such is the insane market for pitching. I throw 68 miles an hour and my 2 year old can't hit my junk; that should be worth at least the minimum.
  5. This game wouldn't have been 2-2 in the 9th if Weeks hadn't had a total brain cramp in getting thrown out at 3rd. That said I can't say if CC was the determining factor. He had not a lot to do with the DP in the 8th and then created his own problem. We still won and that is all that counts. A Joe Winkelslas W counts the same as a CC W when you are adding up Ws at the end.
  6. I'm hoarse. Just totally hoarse. Exciting game to be at and if you were there, you understood everything that was going on. There was no way CC was coming out of that game until he had they win. As the 8th ended, nobody in the dugout talked to him. He ripped off his coat, wiped off his arms, and got back out there. There was a standing O as he came in, and it never really stopped. Miller Park moved. There was no sitting through most of the ninth. I didn't hear one thing about a certain person who plays a certain game 2 hours to the north all day.
  7. I've said it before, I'll say it again: Dale Sveum shot a man in Memphis just to watch him die.
  8. I voted 25 times ending at 735 CDT last night. I tried to vote tonight, but was barred. Frankly, the online vote is bovine leavings. If I manage to take an awl or curcuit tester into a game (sorry brewers, not hard) I can vote as many times as I like. As long as I get a paper ballot. I guesss it it is more important to bar my online malfeasance than poking out an eye...
  9. I live in Wauwatosa and I had trash blow past my house this morning in the wind. It happens. And speaking of not being able to handle traffic, ever been on 94 at rush hour here? Not exactly swift transport, at least in Chicago you have a few more options to get around. Chicago getting the games would be huge for the whole region. The Milwaukee 7 should be doing whatever it takes to work with Chicago's bid team. And say what you want about Daley, all that corruption does allow him to get things done from time to time. Nothing like having a semi-totalitarian leader for life running your bid. How do you think the Chinese got their act together so fast?
  10. I have to agree with RU, different situation. Sure, Tampa is battling for the top with the Sawx, and every game is important, but it is still June. Now is the time to retaliate, not clinging to a lead late in a game that you KNOW is a must win. For Tampa, if they lose out by one game, they can turn to look to this one if they so choose. Probably not though. My feeling is that Ned doesn't throw at guys enough. He takes a moral high road approach, but I think they guys want to be backed up. If Braun or Fielder start getting plunked a lot, I would like to see some payback.
  11. Wow, I feel out of it. Nobody told me Micah Owings was white. That is what I get for giving up BBTN.
  12. I am a non-tattooed "Office" watcher who has a 13 year old Saturn and 3 year old Impala. Even if everybody who bought a Highlander or Pilot had bought a Yukon or Suburban instead, the plant would still be hosed. Large SUVs will still have their place, but the days where they don't say "Park Ranger" or "Sheriff" on the side are over. At 4 bucks a gallon owning something that realistically gets 10 miles a gallon just don't fly (EPA estimates are fiction). As for Wal-Mart, no problem, but everything there is made in China. At least at Whole Foods (who doesn't exist; Go Outpost!) the occasional item is grown in this state.
  13. I have an Impala and I love it, even though like Melvin it was made in Canada. My neighbor has a Subaru made in Indiana and my folks have a Honda from Ohio. About 14 years ago, GM made a bet that gas prices would remain the same in the US more or less forever. They made large trucks (and some cars) that were not so fuel efficient. So now a plant that makes large trucks is getting closed because gas has risen and will probably never go down again. I don't gots an MBA or nuttin, but that seems to make sense. Where GM is really hosed is in its legacy costs. The folks who have been hired in the last 15 years or so don't have the deals their dads and granddads had. Its the past guaranteed benefits that are KILLING them (pensions, all expenses paid medical care for life, free legal representation, etc.) What has also been killing GM and the other domestics is being about 5 years behind every trend in cars that people want. Its a perfect storm now, and all hands on deck.
  14. Good to see Hawing bust out the Sharpie avatar again. I miss DD, especially since Carne Estrada didn't work out so well.
  15. I got a job, I'm off the dole. Its good to be useful.
  16. I've been divorced from ESPN for 3 years now, but I still peek in from time to time. You think Steven A is bad on the air, you should catch some of his radio show; he is the New York Post come to life. Berman is waaaay played out but, as was said earlier, he was there at the start with Ley and carried a lot of water for ESPN. Actually, I kinda miss the days when ESPN filled its programming with midget racing (the cars), rodeos and Australian Rules Football. Now, like many other journalistic outlets, they have to BE the story, not just report on it. It takes a lot of fake controversy to fill all that air. I hope they spin off a soccer channel and put Rob Stone in charge. No, I don't like Berman.
  17. How many years has a promising season, or some part thereof, gone down in flames in Pittsburgh? I think, karmically, we are due. I can't prove karma, nor can I make up a convoluted equation that supports what I am trying to say. All I know is that we need to sacrifice a live chicken. Now go Google non sequitur.
  18. I'm thinking this may be true for several reasons: 1. DM is in Nashville to "look" at guys (*cough* offer job to Kremblas/gaze longingly at Branyan). 2. Even though it is a post in JS blog, they must have some info they haven't confirmed yet and running the story under the cover of an outside blog is a good way to test the waters. 3. Mark A. is in the area. 4. We have an off day. 5. We're about to play 16 games in a row.
  19. They may have moved to NYC, but their hearts are still in Wisco. You write what you know.
  20. If Zambrano hates Edmonds, I will have to rethink my anti-Zambrano position. I hope this is like the inverse of the dugout handbags that sparked the Cubs last year; Edmonds sends them down the tubes. If they wanted a bitter me-firster who can't play the outfield anymore, at least they could have signed Bonds and shut the union up.
  21. I hated seeing Edmonds against the Brewers. At least I don't have to see that until July. If the Cubs get 3 titles in 3 years, does that mean they won't win again until 2311?
  22. That is the story JS has as well, that West came came and took the ball. It seems Mr. West likes creating these kind of situations.
  23. I am an efficient professional in my early 30s and nobody respects me. Yes, I am sure Gagne told Yost he was good to go, but Yost can't base his decision on naught but that. Sure the guy you are paying $10 million to and was facing being forcibly shorn if he showed his face in public is going to say he is fine. I was less concerned with his closing ability as I was for using the guy in his 30s with injury problems 2 nights in a row after he just threw 2 innings in a game for the first time since he was on drugs. Taking risks is fine. I prefer, managerially speaking, those risks only be taken when they have to.
  24. I gotta say I was fine with pulling Bush and CV when he did. All year those two had been melting down in the 5th or the 6th, so sending them out for the 7th would have been bad. Don't play with fire and turn things over to your pen which has been pretty good so far. If he leaves them in, I am sure he would be excoriated for doing so. As for putting Gagne in, well, I'm in the "don't fire Yost (for now)" camp, but I really thought he was huffing glue at that point. The guy begged of the closer role 2 DAYS AGO and he just threw 2 innings for the first time in a long time. Its like dousing yourself in gasoline and then jumping over a camp fire. Am I glad it worked? Sure, but I never want to see it again.
  25. I filed with TT, and mine is here. $300 into the 2 year old's EdVest account, new glasses for me so I don't look like a drunken brawler in interviews, some house plants and pots for Mrs. TheBwaz, got some routine maintenance done on the cars, went to dinner, and am sitting on the rest. I just stuffed it in my mattress because my savings account pays a whopping .1%
