  1. The whole confidence, and pitching with conviction idea with Arnett is probably set back for the rest of the season now. What would Arnett have to do to get back to WI this year? Buy a plane ticket would be my guess. This is very discouraging for a guy who was supposed to be on the fast track.
  2. Maybe it's time to move him to another organziation for a player in a similar situation. I just don't see Angel manning an OF corner for us in the future. He goes from being a better than average catching prospect to a pretty average outfield prospect at best. It remains to be seen how his defense will develop in the outfield. Might be best for everyone to give him a fresh start elsewhere.
  3. I don't think I've ever advocated about selling high. Simply because you never know your selling high until after the fact. Hindsight is easy. Reality isn't. Trading McGehee last year would have been a huge mistake. That being said the only players I'd consider selling high on are guys that have demonstrated that they are huge injury risks and have had major injuries in the past. It becomes a fine line for a GM to determine if they are likely to get hurt again in the near future or if that player has maybe started to train better and keep themselves in better health than before lowering the risk of injury and if were past injuries bad luck (got run over on the basepaths for example). In other words I'd have to take serious looks at Parra and Weeks and make some decisions having more facts in front of me than a devoted fan does.
  4. At the rate prospects turn out it isn't realistic to trade either Braun or Yo for prospects. Every player has a price but it isn't realistic to consider trading either of these guys. If we move Prince at some point for just prospects I'd be very upset.
  5. It's a sad day in Brewer land when people are jumping up and down with joy that we let a player go in a move that will cost the team around 10 million. I'm not suggesting the move shouldn't have been done rather that i don't get the hatred for him. He didn't do drugs, get caught with another woman , or get arrested after a police chase. Suppan simply looks like he's done. The release itself is fine. Why be mad because he signed a contract? Wouldn't you have done the same? At least he didn't pull an Eric Byrnes and ride off into the sunset on his bicycle. Best of luck to him in the future. edit-- took out filtered word--pl
  6. Bush, Parra, Suppan, Narveson. What's the difference? If one of them was our fifth starter I would have no issue with things. The problem is we have 4 mediocre pitchers all taking turns starting this year. I expect to see a few changes over the course of the year with guys going to and from the pen. It's not like we have any replacements ready.
  7. Good luck to Heether. Hopefully he can carve out some sort of career for himself. I can't quite figure out why everyone wants Suppan off the roster so badly but I don't see anyone screaming for Hoffman to be gone? I'm not suggesting Suppan has done anything that supports him being kept but what's the rush to get rid of him? He seldomly pitches anymore. I'm sure if Melvin can upgrade he will do so. Things like Budget and availability come into play though. As for Heether I think it's a good move for him. He wasn't going to get much playing time here and I wonder if Doug was doing him a favour by putting him on waivers. There are going to be more roster moves coming soon and it's a little hard to criticize the GM now before you see how everything shakes out over the next couple of weeks.
  8. Hopefully Capuano had to leave early to catch a plane.
  9. What a thrill this must be for him. No pressure but the Brewers could use a starter or two or three. Make sure he waves off the catcher a time or two.
  10. If he keeps pitching like he has we won't need to worry about the out clause. He will be called up. I think in this case both the team and Capuano realzie that he can't be rushed. He needs to be patient and sure he is ready to come up. I rather see him make another start or two in the minors and come up and have success than rush and be done for good.
  11. This is how veterans lose their job's sometimes. I hope Lucroy can call a great game at the pro level. If he can do that and hit ok he could be up to stay. If not he get's some valuable experience and goes back to AAA for a bit. Either way it's a win win situation for the Brewers as they get to see if Lucroy is ready yet and Lucroy gets valuable experience. I'm a lot less concerned about his hitting than his ability to call the game at this level. Catching is the one position that is all about Defense and having the ability to keep your pitchers settled down and comfortable. Hitting is just a bonus.
  12. I am anxious to see how he does this time around. I could see him getting a chance to close later in the year depending on the circumstances.
  13. This is likely going to stress Jeffress out. Well at least we know he has coping techniques to help him deal with his stress. Not sure why anyone considers him a prospect anymore. Sure he has the velocity and always has but he never really harnessed it and self destructed himself along the way. Brewers should have cut ties with him a while back and saved some money.
  14. The bull pen will shake itself out over the rest of the year. I'm not worried. Having a surplus in the minors isn't a bad thing. Injuries will happen and middle releivers command a premium every year at the trade deadline. If we are injury free one or more could get moved towards the deadline to fill other holes or for prospects and that's all good.
  15. Wow after that debut the Cubs look like geniouses. I gotta say I was impressed even if he is a Cub. Maybe he wants out already as he knows he can never win with the Cubs and is trying to get to free agency as quickly as he can.
  16. If every move Melvin made turned to Gold he wouldn't be a GM. The fact is he's been the best GM this team has had in a generation now. Does everything he try work? No but name a GM in baseball that's been more consistent with a mediocre payroll? It's not like we are the Yankees and Red Sox and can throw whatever it takes at the wall to sign a player. I don't think there is a better GM in baseball at pulling players off the scrap heap that everyone else has given up on. He's hired well, look around the big leagues and you see quite a few ex-Brewer management types in prominent roles in other organzations as they got hired away and promoted. That's as good a sign of a great organization as on field results sometimes. The only real flaw that I see is the pitcher development. In my mind Melvin has failed to get the right people in place to develop pitchers. No one is perfect. But if we replace him I think it would be a downgrade.
  17. Lewis is a valuable kind of guy and I'd think someone would swing a deal for him prior to him being released. He's dropping down the depth chart quite a bit in San Fran so you never know but if Melvin can get him I'd rather have him than Edmonds.
  18. I'd actually give the 5th spot to Narveson, put Suppan in the bullpen with Villaneuava and send Parra either away in a trade or to AAA. To me Parra is just a younger version of what Suppan has become. Unreliable. He needs time to dominate in AAA if he has any chance to succeed for very long in the majors. That's why I suggest trade as I think you could get more than his current value back. I think Suppan should be the mop up guy in blowouts. he's good for the innings and we don't have to blow up the bullpen so half of them aren't available for several days. Macha could even abuse him a little in those games, who really cares. Suppan could also spot start when needed on short notice. We're paying him either way so we might as well use him in these types of situations. Plus if we stick Parra in the bullpen and don't use him regularly he won't have any chance at progressing. Narveson is the only pitcher of the bunch here that I won't just see as an automatic loss every 5th day (unless we are playing Pittsburgh or Houston as anyone has a chance those games)
  19. Did anyone seriously think we were going to miss Cole Gillespie this much? Looking at Arizona's depth chart maybe we could get him back. I would hope that Melvin is watching the waiver wire and looking at guys out of options around the league who are bubble guys in the OF. I'd much rather have a guy still in his 20's than Edmonds as my 5th outfielder.
  20. Nice move. Each player gets a fresh start with a new organization. Lofgren is a starter so to me he has more upside. It's much easier to make someone a reliever down the road than to convert them to a starter. Plus if Lofgren had been kept in the majors all year it would have likely derailed his career. Pitching on occasion and then having to build up your innings again next year in AAA would likely just lead an arm injury.
  21. Really. Derrick Turnbow would like a call. That's a pretty debatable statement. You either have it or you don't. Raw skills only take you so far. While I'm sure you can teach techniques and such to help players keep mentally sharp it's one of those things you kind of have to develop on your own.
  22. Nope Lofgren ain't Parra. He hasn't posted a 6.36 ERA with a 1.829 WHIP at the major league level yet. I hope Parra can turn it around a become a servicable pitcher but I just don't understand everyone knocking Suppan around when he wasn't even close to being our worst pitcher last year. Suppan at least had a career.
  23. We are probably better set up at 3b better than any other postion than catcher for now and the future. McGehee can cover 3b for the next couple of years and then make way for Gamel's bat. I'm a lot more comfortable with 3b than 2b. What happens when the inevitable happens and Rickie goes down for the year? I love having Craig Counsell on the team but not as my starting 2nd baseman.
  24. Babe Ruth didn't really look like a ball player either. I mean really what is a ball player supposed to look like? I couldn't care less as long as he plays well.
  25. Nick Neugebauer. I really thought the guy would become a #1 starter and that the sky would be the limit for him. Then before you could blink he was gone never to be heard of again.
