  1. Torres maybe isn't the best example. Remember he was done with Pittsburg as they had reneg'd on a verbal deal in his contract to use his baseball schools or something to that effect wherever it is he is from. He even was still considering retirment after we got him or at least I remember seeing rumours to that effect.
  2. If we can move Hall without having to pay most of his contract you take whatever the other team will give you and re-invest the money from his contract elsewhere. He just has too many holes in his game. Hardy could be moved but only if we can get a quality starting pitcher back. Otherwise you wait until nearer the trade deadline and move him then. There is always someone desperate for a middle infielder at that time and it would give Escobar more time to get ready at AAA. It's one position we have the luxury of an almost or already ready player to take over who might even have more upside than the current starter. Weeks. I'm not even sure you qualify him an offer. Isn't he arby eligible? Just walk away if you can't trade him. I don't see him as an every day major leaguer and we are going to have to pay him like one. If I'm an opposing GM I'm not giving up a decent prospect for him either. I don't think moving him would be a deal the team would regret down the road no matter what we got back. He is destined to be a major dissapointment wherever he goes. If he can't take the pressure in Milwaukee what's going to happen to him in a major centre. As for the rest of the team you stand pat on the starters. Bring in some new blood for backups relatively on the cheap. I'd also like to see the team try to resign CC at whatever the cost although I doubt it will happen. As for Sheets, thanks for the memories but I don't see him back. I for one would not be against trading Parra for the right player or package either. I'm not saying give him away and not because I don't like him but because I just don't see his arm holding up for long. I think we'd be pleasantly surprised with what we could get back.
  3. Maybe Hardy straight up for Cain but unless they are talking Lincecum there is no way we do a deal like this. They would need to throw in a Schierholtz with Cain to even consider Fielder. And I'm a guy that thinks we overvalue our players on this board a lot. The Giants are way overvaluing their players in this deal. Maybe that's why they are so terrible.
  4. And there is a manager out there that hasn't made a few mistakes. Come on. Melvin is likely to get a one year extension. He deserves it.
  5. Does anyone actually think Weeks will be back next year? I just don' see it.
  6. Well something had to be done but this smacks of desperation. I hope I'm wrong but I doubt it will work. The real problem stems from the bullpen. We didn't do what we needed to do back in July and get a reliever or two to help the pen at whatever the cost. Not defending Yost here but it's not his fault he had a bunch of retreads like Riske, Gagne and Mota who just can't get it done consistently anymore. One of those 3 you can live with and work around but all 3. You'd need to be a magician.
  7. This was one of the best trades in Brewers history from a Brewers prospective whether we make the playoffs or not. The Linebrink trade was another. You don't get players for nothing unless your dealing with Washington. What both the Linebrink deal last year and especially the Sabathia trades showed is we have an owner that isn't afraid to do whatever it takes to win. It also shows Milwaukee has a winning attitude. Trades don't always work out and that's what we have to remember. Think back ten years when we all wondered what we'd get in return for dealing off our best players. Those days are hopefully over for the most part. Small market or not we have shown enough to become a much more attractive market to free agents. We also have the minor league depth and a great drafting history for the most part recently and can do trades like these.
  8. I think the bullpen has to become the 5th starter. If Villaneuva and Mclung can go 3 or so each that would be all we need to get through to the end of the year. Shut Parra down for a couple of weeks and let him pitch again once prior to the playoffs to see if he makes the post season roster or not. It's not like the bullpen is short of pitchers right now.
  9. The easy answer to the question is neither. If Hardy is not able to slide over to allow Escobar to play I think we need to target whatever happens to be available on the trade market. Then if it's possible we trade Weeks although I don't think there will be much of a market for him. I hope I'm wrong but if we move Weeks there will likely be outrage on this board for how little we actually get back for him. But I'm not sure what other choice we have.
  10. This is the only question you have to ask yourself. Is Sherrill better than Mota and Gagne and the answer is yes. I could see a package of Pena, Stetter doing it or one of those two with Nelson and a West Virginia player with a lower ceiling getting it done. We can't go into the playoffs with what we have. If we have to overpay a little who really cares if we make the playoffs and can make a little noise. The playoff revenue will offset the loss of a decent prospect. This team only has a window of a couple of years at most. This year is the year. It's not realistic to think we will have a battery to match Sheets and CC for another 20 years or so. If a prospect isn't going to help us this year or next at this point they are expendable. Next year might even be too late.
  11. Here's the thing. Stetter is just a phone call away and no matter how bad Mota has been if we can't make a deal for a relief pitcher and a pitcher in the bullpen goes down between now and the trade deadline is there a better option? I'm not so sure there is. If Melvin pulls off a deal for a quality reliever between now and the trade deadline then Mota can pack his bags. Why don't we just trade him to Kansas City like all the other pitching dissapointments.
  12. What a steal for arizona. Bonifacio projects as nothing more than an average player if he ever makes it. He's as likely to become the next Hernan Irribaren as an every day player. You have to wonder if Arizona has pictures of Jim Bowden or something. This is like us offering up Brad Nelson to Oakland for Street.
  13. After everyone sees what it's going to cost us to get Huston Street (Please happen) they'll know why we had to settle on Durham who is a definate upgrade over Dillon by the way.
  14. If I'm the A's I'm insisting that either Gamel or Escobar are the centre piece of the offer.
  15. I'm glad he's in the organization and think he has a decent chance at making it with the Brewers eventually but what makes anyone think he'd be successful in the majors right now? I haven't seen him pitch in person but all the information I've read on him and the stats show he has a hard time with control at times. I don't think that would translate well in a promotion at this time. The other factor is the Brewers have publicly stated they are going for it this year. That was made quite clear with the Sabathia acquisition. Why would they then address their bullpen woes with a large question mark which is what Pena is at this time. They'd be more likely to move Pena and other prospect (s) for a decent reliever already in the majors.
  16. He still has an agent? What's he promoting now? Soap on a rope/file in a cake? It would be a public relations nightmare to sign this guy. When was the last time federal agents arrested a guy when the count was 3-2? Sign Bonds and you might actually get to see it. No one will touch him.
  17. This would be a great acquisition and well worth a Salome or similar type player. George is a workhorse. He's one of those guys who slipped through the cracks and developed some bad habits along the way like showing up in independant ball out of shape and a several pack a day smoking habit. After his pitching coach in Winnipeg sat him down and told him to shape up or he was going to be cut but at the same time that he was one of the most talented guys in the league he began an amazing transformation and was in the Majors relatively quickly after that. Lets face reality. Our Achilles heel is our bullpen and it needs a fairly extensive overall in order to make it anywhere in the postseason.
  18. Lawrie has a pretty decent shot to yet be named to the Canadian Olympic team so don't expect to see him playing any type of organized ball in the Brewers system this year. That won't prevent him from signing though.
  19. All he needs is a good greasy steak to get him going. Wouldn't it be something if he switched back to eating red meat on a regular basis and started hitting home runs again. I wonder if there is somewhere you could bet on this? I'd make that bet. Vegetarianism is just not a natural thing. You can go back to the start of mankind and there is one consistent. We eat meat.
  20. Josh Hamilton is a very rare exception to the rule. More often than not these guys end up like Max St. Pierre(think that's his name). The guy we tried to turn into a pitcher. It looks like he may have turned his life around but it's very unlikely he'll ever play in the big leagues. If he could have stayed sober, who knows.
  21. My how quickly some forget the drug suspension and the fact he tested positive a 2nd time which he was lucky to not get suspended further for. Jeffress may have a high ceiling but he hasn't even been drug test free for a year. He's an extreme long shot at best to hold it together long enough for him to get to the show. Given the K total someone will take him. It would be best to wash our hands of him and let him become someone else's headache if we can get a solid player in return.
  22. I wonder if this is going to make it tough to sign some of these guys in high school or with college eligibility left. I'm speaking of the pitchers. That's a lot of competition. I wouldn't want to make a bad start in Helena this year. There could be 20 guys lined up behind you waiting for an opening.
  23. It was that or a straight release as he couldn't get into Canada because of his criminal record. At least they got some publicity out of this one. This is the same team that plans to sign Theoren Fleury for a game too. No one goes to the games there so they need to try something.
  24. Been there. Done that. No thanks. We don't really need to go down this road again. He's a K machine in the majors and what has happened to change that?
  25. Reed Johnson = Cubs MVP Who else is going to help the Cubs cause more this year? He put our #1 pitcher out for the year. No one else on that team is going to do more this year to hurt the Brewers chances at the post season. As for Edmonds at least Lou has someone else he can relate to. They can tell each other tales about the horse and buggy days from when they were kids.
