  1. I really hope they choose to bring back Lopez and just move on from Weeks. There comes a time when a team just has to quit investing in a dead horse and Weeks is a dead horse. Some will say he was just starting to show the true potential he had but the fact is he got hurt again. I'm sure there is some team who would give up a decent pitcher for Weeks and I hope Doug spends the winter seeking that team out.
  2. McGehee has made Gamel expendable. And that isn't a bad thing. It gives us a lot of versatility and more trade options. It also allows us to send Gamel back to AAA to start next year and see if McGehee is more than just a one year wonder which I'm beginning to believe he is. If Gamel can start off hot in AAA he could be the centre piece of a trade to get a pitcher mid season.
  3. I'm not suggesting neither will be protected but neither Green nor Cain are locks. I seriously doubt anyone would carry Green for a year and I doubt any team would want to carry Cain for a year either even as a 5th outfielder. I don't think he is even close to being MLB ready. I'm much more happy if the Brewers choose to protect pitchers instead.
  4. Why would Atlanta do that? Jurjens is one of the top young pitchers in the game. We would have to give up more than just Hart and Gamel to get him. I think Kris Medlen and Vazquez would be better players to try to pry loose.
  5. Melvin isn't going anywhere, nor should he. I would be very surprised if Macha wasn't given a 2nd chance. As for Sheets I'm not sure why anyone would want a pitcher who has been off for a full year. If he comes back he'll need to sign a short term cheap contract but I'd rather take my chances on someone else. We have the basis of a decent rotation next year with Gallardo, Bush, Suppan and Looper. I wouldn't be surprised if we move Gamel or Escobar for a top flight pitcher.
  6. Doug just proves he's smarter all the time. JJ plays terrible all year. The team should have sent him down a month or more before they did but they wait to the last second to give JJ a chance to snap out of things. He doesn't do it so they send him down and in the process he manages to drive back up JJ's trade value which was getting close to nil by adding the extra year on. JJ has always been one of my favourite brewers but when i see crybaby athletes I think they need a good slap across the face to wake them up to the reality of the world. None of these guys have a clue what life is really like. They all live in a fantasy world. They don't work shiftwork, don't have to worry about making the next mortgage payment, or wonder how they are going to replace the fridge that just conked out. Give me a break. You are lucky. You are a gifted athlete. Don't pout. Perform. Or else you'll find yourself playing in some back water town in Taiwan or Mexico somewhere. Because there is always a kid waiting to take your job. And it just happened. So you'd better deal with it JJ without acting like my 6 year old does when she doesn't get what she wants.
  7. Nolasco is a great buy low candidate. I also like Kris Medlen, Tim Hudson, Kawakami or Vasquez from the Braves. The Braves are 6 or 7 deep in starters next year so are a good team to target.
  8. But then there is the reality of it. We tried to sign CC and couldn't compete. Strike off the first 2-3 free agents again on this years list for the same reason. Do we really want another Jeff Suppan type contract. Then there isn't a lot left. Melvin is bang on with his comments. You can't just trade for an elite pitcher whenever you want. The same people who cry for his head now would be screaming for his head if the likes of Gamel, our top pitching in the minors, Escobar, etc were traded 3-5 in a package for a decent #1 or #2 type starter. I'm sure Melvin will try to trade for a top flight pitcher but the reality available to us is to trade for or sign a pitcher or 3 who have had down years and hope at least one of them has a major bounce back. Other teams don't want our crap. I think that was supported with the DFA of Bill Hall. JJ won't bring much in return as he is coming off a down year. We trade Prince and there goes the offense. The only one who might still have decent trade value is Weeks. Even though he's been hurt yet again someone might be willing to take a chance on him. Melvin tried hard last year to get a starter. Lowe, Johnson and CC all said thanks but no thanks. Lets be a little realistic here. Melvin knows what we need. But the reality of it is this isn't a fantasy baseball league where trades get made every week.
  9. I never understand why guys like Bradley are even signed by major league teams at his stage of his career. He is a cancer and not worth the effort. Sure he has talent but it's not like he's had just one meltdown over his career. This would be a terrible move. He'd be whining and disrupting the team within a week.
  10. There is no leash. Given the contract he has he is on the team to start the year. The reality of it is he is still a fine option for a 5th starter. Look around the league there are a lot worse. The problem we have is after Gallardo there is no one to fill in the #2-#4 roles. I have no faith in Parra, Bush, Looper, Villaneuva, Mlclung or anyone else we currently have in the system. The reality of it is we might get one starter to fill in the #4 role from the rest of the guys we are currently roling out there but we need to sign or trade for a true #2 and #3 starter. It wouldn't hurt to sign a 3rd starter as well. While that isn't likely to happen this team won't win anything next year unless it does. There are a lot of Parra and Bush supporters out there but I'm not one of them. Neither has shown any consistency or that they really deserve to be starters in the majors over their careers. This is going to prove to be an interesting offseason.
  11. I'm hoping we resign Lopez but as for the rest of them if the return is good by all means move them at this point.
  12. Really what makes anyone think Parra is set? He's been hyped on this site a lot but has yet to deliver any type of consistency. On quite a few teams he wouldn't even be in the majors right now. If he is set I hate to think of the type of year we are going to have next year.
  13. Well right now we have a #1 pitcher in Yo and 4 #5 type starters. Bush makes a solid #3 when healthy but as for the rest they are all viable #5 guys. You could get away with giving Parra one more chance as your #4 but I'm beginning to think his ceiling is a lot lower than a lot of us originally thought. Consistency is a problem. So with the free agent list being what it is a trade is the only option to bring in a #2. I'm not sure a package of Weeks and Hardy would get a #2 but I'd try that first. Realistically Salome, Gamel or Lucroy might need to be moved though in a package to get what we need. And that doesn't address any of our pitching depth issues either. At least we have what I think are some decent middle releivers moving up through the system. We shouldn't have to sign or trade for any of those the next several years.
  14. And instead of disciplining him the Mets pinch hit him tonight. No one is bigger than the team. A suspension without pay for disrupting the team would have been more appropriate and let him grieve away at it.
  15. Melvin did good to get some of the salary paid by Seatlle. Hall looks to be pretty much done as a major leaguer even though he can play multiple positions. Not sure why anyone would be concerned about how the Brewers handled his recent Triple A stint. Even if he'd stayed down all month and smacked the cover off the ball I doubt it would have affected his value much. Thoughts of getting Harang for him were just delusional. As for Arroyo why would we want Manny Parra's clone when he already have one pitcher who is lights out one night and lit up the next. Plus you have to question Arroyo's sanity given his recent comments.
  16. Doug Melvin is the best GM in the past 20 years for the Brewers. Why would anyone want to get rid of him. It's easy to sit in your armchair and question moves. It's a lot harder to actually do them. When you look at his trades he's won the majority of them. The team has drafted much better under him and yes he's done a few bad trades but who hasn't? If everything worked out every time we would all be GM's. The guy has shown he will do what it takes to get a player in the past with Linebrink and CC. That he didn't get a starter this year suggests there just wasn't one to have. Would anyone have been happy if we'd traded Escobar, Gamel, Salome and one of our best A ball pitchers for Cliff Lee or Halliday? That was basically the price looking at the Lee deal.
  17. I'm not sure why anyone thinks this hurts Hardy's trade value? A guy hitting in the .220's doesn't have much to begin with regardless of his defensive skills. If he goes down and works hard for the rest of the month at AAA he might be able to create some trade value for the winter if he comes back in September and performs. Why would anyone thinks he's going to suddenly come out of a year long hitting skid in mid August if we leave him in the majors?
  18. It was bound to happen. Hopefully we can still trade him and get something back in return or at least have the other team pick up some of the remaining contract. When a guy doesn't produce over an extended period of time there isn't a lot of other options. Hopefully Hall can catch on in the AL and carve out some sort of career as a utility guy. As for those hoping we do the same to Suppan think about it for a minute. Suppan is still a better option than the majority of other 5th starters as when he is healthy he can eat innings. A lot of 5th starters around the league don't go deep enough in games to keep their bullpens from being overworked regularly.
  19. Nice Move. He should be an important part of our bullpen for the rest of this and next year. It's important to have a veteran prescense like Weathers and who knows if Hoffman will resign.
  20. I still think Manny Parra has a decent ceiling as well but any day I can move minor leaguers and Manny for Roy Holladay I do it without hesitation. It's like comparing apples to oranges. They both pitch but that is about where the comparison ends. Doc could win the Brewers a World Series this year or next. Manny might help them limp into the playoffs. If we could win a world series in the next two years I couldn't care less about dropping under .500 for a couple of years after that while we rebuild. Living in Canada I get to see a lot more of Holladay on TV than you guys as basically every Jays game is on TV country wide. I'm a lot closer to Milwaukee than Toronto so no I don't go to any games in Toronto but I will say this. Most of the posters on this board don't realize just how good he is. And that's not suggesting most of the posters on this board don't know baseball, in fact it's just the opposite. This guy is one of the top 2 or 3 pitchers in baseball right now and in his prime.
  21. But the only way the Jays would be interested in Hall is if we agreed to pay at least 80% of the remaining salary on his contract and give up a Matt Gamel or Brett Lawrie with him. Otherwise someone else will be willing to pay a top prospect or maybe even two for him. It really amazes me why so many on this board think other teams will take what we either don't want or 2nd or 3rd tier prospects with low ceilings for players who are in demand around the league. I would suggest Rolen is in demand given his current stats. It's up to the Jays to decide whether they want to move him or not. JP is going to be fired this off season no matter what. The public has demanded it and if the Jays want to sell any tickets next year they will fire him. So given the circumstances I'm not sure what JP will do. I still think there will be a firesale there in the last couple of days before the deadline.
  22. If it's just a dumb mistake than you'd have to assume the kid has no IQ what so ever after all the Jeffress stuff. These kids make insane amounts of money coming out of high school and college when they sign. With the amount of money that is on the line there is no such thing as an honest or dumb mistake. That's why these guys have agents and the team to help them out with these types of things. They don't even have to do it all themselves when they are picking out what to take and not to take.
  23. Now my Mercedes Helena game worn jersey is useless. Oh well never had great expectations for him anyways. Great move by Doug trading spare parts for a solid player. Hopefully he can get Doug Davis back before the deadline as well.
  24. No thanks. Not with his contract. If Lorenzo Cain pans out that's great otherwise if Cameron is gone I'm sure we'll find a cheap replacement through free agency or trade. I'm not convinced that Cameron won't resign for a year or two when all is said and done.
  25. The home run king is one of the top offensive players in the game right now. Since Mark A took over he's shown every intention of trying to put a winning team on the field and he's held nothing back at accomplishing this. The better question would be why would you trade Prince? From a Brewers perspective it would make zero sense. If you move him you get a lot of prospects. High end ones for sure but for every high end prospect that makes it there is one that either completely flops or turns into an average player at best. Teams that deal the superior player lose the deal as often or more than they win it.
