Feel positive after reading some of the comments earlier in the thread about Civale's peripheral stats and comparing his performance in Cleveland vs. Tampa Bay. (Maybe something in Tampa caused the negative spike?)
More importantly, the need for starting pitchers to pick up the slack on innings pitched is urgent now, not just in August/September after the trade deadline. If Civale can be a competent, competitive starter, that will mean getting innings out of him for four weeks prior to the trade deadline. That should pay off bigger dividends later in the season, as there seems to be serious concern about overtaxing the bullpen with how the rotation currently stands.
Additionally, getting a pitcher with another season of team control helps to bridge the gaps created with the injuries to starters in 2024 that will extend into 2025. You basically have to count on Gasser giving nothing next season; Woodruff is a complete wild card; no clue if Miley actually makes the comeback instead of just retiring. So adding a potential piece for next season is another good bit of work by Arnold.
