  1. Is there something particular about this week specifically that makes you say that? Just the that the winter meetings are happening? Not to speak for others’ rationale, but it does seem like getting a Hader deal done earlier rather than later allows to team to factor in the return as they construct the roster, and thus adds clarity to the rest of the offseason plan. As such, it makes a lot of sense to do it now, and the meetings are the logical place for that to happen.
  2. First off, you said "profits," not 'the business side of things’, so please don't move the target. Second, if I recall, you've previously railed on the Titledown District here, with the admission that you haven't been there recently. Is that still the case? They're doing literally the same thing that the Cubs have done with Wrigleyville, which is a large part of the Cubs recent resurgence and success. There's nothing that can possibly viewed as negative, IMO, regarding the intention of making Lambeau a destination and revenue earning facility beyond 10 game days a year. How in the world can the Packers' situation on the field be HURT by their investments around/at the stadium? Third, The NFL has a salary cap. The Packers, both this year and in the past, are within a couple of million dollars of the $200 million salary cap. What are they supposed to do to be more 'focused on winning?' Spend MORE money than allowed by the cap on players? They're likely going to spend virtually every penny of their cap room next year. Perhaps I'd buy your argument if they were routinely spending tens of millions of dollars less than the cap, but that is factually untrue.
  3. What in the world is this based on? I don’t think I’ve EVER heard the organization discuss “making profits.” Implying that the organization is focused more on profits rather than on winning is borderline outrageous. I guess because they're the only team that releases financial data to the public? Not sure. [sarcasm]Maybe it’s the millions they’re expecting to make on those AJ Dillon jerseys?[/sarcasm]

  5. I think there are a lot of people that don’t understand or don’t agree with how the Packers draft and equate that to ‘not prioritizing winning’ or whatever that means. Not acknowledging, of course, that the reason the Packers have had nearly three decades of high-level sustained success is that they’re playing chess while some teams staple their head to the game table.
  6. There's a some of legacy twisting going on with Knebel: 2015: Above Average Reliever 2016: Below Average Reliever 2017: Elite Reliever 2018: Above Average Reliever 2020: Poor Reliever The Dodgers have the luxury of trying to see if Knebel can come back from an injury and be elite again as he was three seasons ago. But, if he's just 'above average' as he was for most of his career before the injury, that's easy for the Brewers to replace and paying Knebel $5 million to do it would be a poor use of their financial resources.
  7. That ball is three yards out of bounds.... how do you call PI there?
  8. The offensive game plan isn’t real great. Hopefully Chryst takes the play calling back for Iowa.
  9. Mertz has been horrible the last two games. Not the savior we thought, at least at this point, apparently.
  10. Feels like you need to answer with a TD on this drive to have a chance.
  11. I think he started.... But yeah, name not called at all.
  12. Watching their coach today for the first time, he’s got a bit of PJ Fleck’s ‘look at me’ personality on the sidelines....
  13. That’s two super weird/ bad penalties on successive kickoff plays....
  14. Mertz had that ball after the fumble. I can’t believe they overturned the umpire that was literally right on top of that.
  15. If they’re going to call PI when their QB continually underthrows those corner routes, it’ll be a long day.
  16. Coan is dressed today, just for the record.
  17. At least it was outside the 40 this time....
  18. Are we going to be forced to watch the remainder of this MSU/OSU disaster before we kickoff?
  19. I know their QB is hurt, but seeing Wisconsin as a nearly two TD favorite seems odd with how well Indiana has played.
  20. Yes. Certainly not a significant free agent. I predict our payroll will be below $100 million to start the season. Possibly closer to $85-90 million. That's basically the assumption that has been made since day one of the offseason, so I don't think there's anything that should be surprising about that number. But, to reach $90million, they'd have between $7-17 million to spend to reach that amount depending on how deferred money is factored, and more if they trade Hader. They're really not in a salary crunch at this point now that the arby stuff is mostly settled.
  21. I'm a big, big fan of signing Santana to a modest deal.
  22. Interesting profile. Absolutely miserable in his brief time in Cincy last year, but acceptable defensively in all 3 OF spots with LAA historically, and a fairly nice bat.
  23. I guess that's the benefit of having the DH, in that as long as you have a more viable bat to hit vs. LHP (ala Ryan Braun), you literally can play to his strengths and avoid his weaknesses. As previously pointed out, if you can get 1.5-2 WAR out of him as a DH vs. RHP only, that's pretty good comparatively. If, however, they're re-signing him with the intention of him seeing extended time at 1B, then I probably shift to your camp.
  24. I hear what you're saying, but I just can't justify basing the difference between 3.5 WAR in 2017 and 0.4 WAR in 2018 just on HR/FB rate. Like adam, I remember the Knebel that finished strong at the end of 2018, but was so bad at one point that he was demoted to the minors a month before that.
  25. I mean, he wasn't. As you note, lots of potential explanations. But he wasn't. And he wasn't anything beyond slightly above average in 2018 either, before the TJ surgery. Just pointing out the statistical facts. You can interpret them however you'd like, obviously. I think what you're choosing to focus on is the loss of a guy that used to be good because of financial constraints, while not acknowledging that A)it is VERY possible that Knebel won't be worth close to $5 million next year, and B)that there's also a good possibility that, though you are correct that the loss of his talent has made the bullpen less talented overall at this moment in time, the off season isn't over and they made be able to replace or exceed said talent level in a more cost-effective way.
