  1. There really has not been any hand-wringing in this thread, -- any trade is going to have its detractors. And oddly, some of the same posters seem to be the detractors in each trade. It certainly can suggest disagreeing just to be contrary or to try and stir up trouble in some cases.
  2. he may struggle like Brad Nelson to be anything but a PH And you expect more than that out of Gillespie? I just don't see it. I fail to see how a team ranked usually fairly high the past few years in farm system rankings can give up a player a year ago that almost cracked the top 5 prospect list and has had the injury bug gave up a 'bad prospect'. No one said "bad prospect", that's a completely blatant exaggeration. And even though his stock was higher a couple of years ago, prospects do fade. Brad Nelson was #2 on the Power 50 a few years ago. Just because a guy was a solid prospect then doesn't mean he remains one now while in the midst of a poor season in AAA and is getting older. I would've thought we could've gotten Davis for Cole, but that must tell you what we'd have to give up to get him. ....or tells you how much value Gillespie really had.
  3. Katin will never see a Brewer uniform, IMHO. I think he'll be in Milwaukee yet this year, so to each his own, I guess.
  4. imagine if he was actually hitting? I think that sums things up pretty well.
  5. Katin is putting up good numbers, but take a look at his on base and such...it's pretty bad. Gillespie's is only 17 points above Katin's. Gillespie's having a pretty bad overall year at AAA- .242/.332/.424, while Katin is at .270/.315/.564. Katin has some upside if his recent plate discipline is for real.
  6. Also, due to his plate discipline, Gillespie was a much safer (and arguably better) prospect than Katin. While fair re: his plate discipline, Gillespie is really without a legitimate position due to his horrible arm as well.
  7. since there was talk around here within the past year or so that Gillespie would be starting in Milwaukee next year IIRC. Over Braun or Hart? You're sure you're not thinking of the chatter about Katin (a much better OF prospect)? If people have been confusing Gillespie with Katin, that certainly makes the negativity about the trade make more sense...
  8. I know you mods have to stick together I assure you that this isn't the case. He, like myself, is probably just stunned by all the hand-wringing over getting a useful player (who's level of usefulness is certainly up for debate) and a possible sandwich pick for next to nothing.
  9. I can't see especially with Macha being concerned about Casey's defense because of the knee why Heether doesn't get called up and let Casey take a rest to heal. If Gamel was here and not getting enough playing time, why should we expect Heether to be called up for the first time and be put in the lineup regularly?
  10. Weeks, Hardy, Escobar, Gamel, McGehee, Hall. Possibly Iribarren and Heether. No room at the Inn next year. Allow me to go on the record as guaranteeing that at least one of those mentioned will not be in the organization come February, and very possibly two of them.
  11. It is not a foregone conclusion that Lopez will be offered Arby. Doug Melvin apparently disagrees with you, and I'll take his feelings on that subject over yours, if that's ok.
  12. Apparently Melvin is stretching like the rest of us because in TH's blog Melvin mentioned to TH that Lopez would be get a sandwich pick in return. Yeah, sure doesn't seem like the team is debating offering him arby at this point.
  13. C'mon, is this really necessary? You can do better than this. And posting "False." as a one word response when someone posts something is Pulitzer-worthy? No, that's actually just talking down to our newer posters. And yes, it is your opinion, not fact. You can do a lot better than "Eh, Lopez still sorta sucks." Where exactly is YOUR actual rationale? I've already posted mine, but apparently you glossed over that. He's posted a .700+ OPS 5 of the last 6 years, and has been very good over his last 500 AB's (since leaving that ballpark in Washington), suggesting it's possible that he's taken a step forward in his career. All of that 'refuting' is already found in this thread.
  14. Well what about Gamel, Heether, the Hurricane? Lopez isn't that great when there are options in-house. Gamel is probably the better option, but for whatever reason, the Brewers aren't convinced that he's ready. If that's the case, he should be playing everyday in AAA, as you have advocated many times here on this very forum. The other two can't really be counted on- yes, they are potential options, but we don't have much of an idea as to how they'll actually perform. With Lopez, you have a pretty good idea of a baseline.
  15. Eh, Lopez still sorta sucks. False. He's probably good for a .730-ish OPS, and there's a possibility that his last 500AB's represent a step forward. Not too bad for a versatile middle infielder that we got for very little, and probably a sandwich pick in return as well.
  16. Lopez will sign a 4 million $ deal to ride pine. His ceiling is not that high -- he is almost 30 -- he's probably not going to ever have a huge payday. Your opinion, not fact. I find it very, very hard to believe he won't decline arby to test the market. He can always get a 1 year deal for roughly that amount of money from pretty much any team at that point.
  17. For 4-5 Mil per year? Yeah, I think they'd take that salary if they decide to trade Hardy. That's not too expensive an insurance policy to have if our middle infielders next year aren't ready. I'm pretty sure Heether could put up a .730 OPS The point is, that's speculation. Lopez is at least proven. Heether could well be the next Chris Barnwell- who knows?
  18. This team isn't losing because of 2B and 3B. No, but it's in serious danger there because of the injuries to McGehee and Counsell that seem to be lingering. And Craig simply can't play this much and be expected to be useful later in the season.
  19. He is not very good at baseball, and we presumably have a healthy Weeks coming back. He's probably going to get a bump -- I'd wouldn't want him back at all. If he's due to get a bump, he'll be trying his hand at free agency and won't accept. Even if Weeks comes back and Lopez accepts for some reason, the Brewers still need versatile utility players, which Lopez is. And, he's posted .700+ OPS 5 of the last 6 seasons.
  20. I don't know why we would offer Lopez Arby's. Why in the world wouldn't they? We don't have to offer him arby to get compensation for him. Yes, you have to offer a free agent arbitration to get comp picks.
  21. So I guess we can infer from this that the current asking price for Davis is too high, or he would have been packaged with Lopez. That seems to be correct. From Tom's blog: Melvin said he tried to expand the deal to include a Diamondbacks pitcher, most likely lefty Doug Davis, but said general manager Josh Byrnes did not seem anxious to deal one. http://www.jsonline.com/blogs/sports/51144512.html
  22. I can think of one. Yeah, Kat's in the process of sending out the invitations to his annual ESPY party as we speak....
  23. The problem is who comes up if Braun or Hart gets injured now? Sure Cat will play against RHP but who would platoon with him? 2B has to be the deepest part of the club with Heether and Iribarren in AAA. Gillespie isn't great shakes but the Brewers are thin in OF right now. Katin is most likely, and probably would have gotten the call over Gillespie anyway in that situation.
  24. I likd Cole Gillespie more than most---but this is peanuts for a good mlb player. Agreed. AND we get a first rounder next June? Sign me up.
  25. either way, we should get a pick for him at the end of the year Exactly. And since he'll likely be type B, that should be a near certainty. Grabbing a supplemental first will get us a prospect that will likely be better than Gillespie was. So the Brewers trade away outfield depth Except that Gillespie can only play LF, and when you consider that his arm strength is pathetic, he's really only an OF because there's no place else for him to be. And guys better than Gillespie can typically be found for a song if we really need OF depth (see Catalanotto, Frank).
