  1. Realistically, it's beginning to look like tread water until 2011 or 2012 when a lot of pitching could be ready. But that's not really realistic at all- Hardy and Fielder likely won't be with the team in 2011 or 2012- our window is now, not 2 or 3 years from now. Whenever the Brewers hit a rough patch we have threads like these. If they win 5 or 6 of their next 7 or 8, we'll be talking about being buyers again for sure.
  2. I read tonight that Votto's dad passed away a few days before he was placed on the DL and the team made up the ear infection deal in order to cover it up. Because there's a reason to cover up his dad passing away? That doesn't make much sense....
  3. That was an intelligent addition to the conversation... Not cool.
  4. 1) No it doesn't, not if you trade pitching for a rental, because it takes so long to develop pitchers... best case scenario any draft pick we'd get this season wouldn't be ready till 2013, we'd get picks no higher than 16 and it's rare for talent to moe through MiLB in 3 years or less, and there's no gaurantee what round the selections would be in, with the exception of the comp picks. But the point is that you're trying to make it sound as if the Brewers were trading away prospects and getting merely rental players in return- you simply HAVE to acknowledge that it's not the case, as they're replacing the prospects with additional talent in the system, though as you say it's at lower levels in development than what was traded away. 2) You're assuming they hit on the draft picks You're assuming the players they traded away continue to develop.....
  5. Didn't we already make a move for a rental last season? Didn't we dump prospects for Linebrink? Melvin has been making deals with prospects. I realize you don't care about the future as much as you want to win today, to each his own, but at some point it would be nice if you would at least acknowledge that buying rentals fills a hole today, but leaves a hole tomorrow.. But that hole is partially filled at worst by filling the system back up with 2 high draft picks for each of the players you mentioned the Brewers trading prospects for, which you should at least acknowledge as well.
  6. Yeah, I don't get why he would be shamed of having been a lovable TV character. I remember a late-night talk show appearance that Werner Klemperer (Col. Klink from Hogan's Heroes) did before he passed away a while back where he was asked something about whether he disliked being referred to as Klink by people on the street and such, and his response was something to the effect of 'I owe much of my success in my career to that character and role, so I would be doing an incredible disservice to myself and my fans if I didn't embrace it.' Now, I can certainly understand being a bit frustrated if you're an actor struggling to break the stereotypical roles/typecasting that a role brings about, but to be angry about it seems shallow as heck.
  7. Why not Bedard, unless his shoulder is jacked. Again, Seattle might not be motivated to trade him yet, since they're not really out of it yet.
  8. TheCrew07 wrote:Your arrogance is astounding, there's no better way to put it. Despite what you may think, there do exist opinions different than yours, opinions that are equally as valid as any that you have posited. Just because a poster hasn't pitched or coached baseball - which is an assumption that you've so benevolently seen fit to share with us - doesn't make their opinion any less valid. Frankly, if coaching baseball makes a person wiser, or playing baseball makes a person wiser, someone needs to tell Dusty Baker and Joe Morgan, because they missed the memo. This puts it very well. Arrogant or not, thecrew07, calling it such violates our rules against personal attacks.
  9. Is it just a coincidence that all these articles/postings stating how false the rumors are come out right after there's word that Peavy is going to the DL? Or Bedard being scratched as well......
  10. Peavy was plan A, Bedard was plan B, on to plan C?
  11. Just odd that Rivera was used over Hardy. Yeah. I think it would be completely coincidental if not for this.... it's extremely odd to use Rivera before JJ unless something is up.
  12. Just think, the Brewers built the team they have despite having just 2 picks in the top 3 rounds 3 times in the last 9 years. This year we have 3 times that, and all have big upside. I think that's the really exciting thing about this years' draft (and last years)- the major influx of talent from all the picks recently helps offset the guys have to trade to help make our runs very nicely. Should make whatever upgrade we go out and get in the next month or so easier to trade prospects for. And major props X for getting two of the first three picks- it was hard enough to project the Brewers' picks when they were picking in the top 5-10, let alone in the 20's.
  13. So what I've learned so far is that each one of these kids has a nice athletic frame and are clutch performers. Great kids that will fit great considering their teams' major league weaknesses. Gah, this coverage is horrible.
  14. The Suppan wins for bobble that actually looks like the player the best.
  15. When you constantly throw darts..... Isn't that kind of the point of being a good GM? Always exploring your options....
  16. They've had guys not on the All-Star team before in the derby, haven't they? I think only once- Howard was allowed in to defend his HR derby championship 2 years ago despite not being an All-Star. Don't think it's happened outside of that.
  17. Josie by The Outfield for a walk up song just made Kelly Johnson my favorite non-Brewer. Honestly, I couldn't believe that either.
  18. So you mean Tommy Hanson isn't instantly going to be the second coming of Cy Young? Who would have thought.....
  19. I just don't see how he will be an upgrade over Parra at this point. I disagree very much. Glavine wasn't great last year in fairly limited innings, but as Manny's psyche/mechanics/whatever continue to grow as an issue, I think there are a lot of options out there (including Glavine) that are probably an upgrade. The real question is how much more of an upgrade he would be over someone like Wright/McClung/Dillard that are already in-house.
  20. Seeing Russell in the All-Star game would be quite sweet. If only for the reason that he'd finally be able to put up an astounding show in the HR derby....
  21. The system in the NCAA is kind of backwards- the future athletes at the school are now punished with postseason bans for something that they had nothing to do with, while the people responsible (Calipari and Rose) will be long gone. Coaches will continue to abuse the system until they're held accountable as well. If the school faces postseason bans, apply that to the coaches as well. So if a coach like Calipari leaves, a post season ban follows him to where he goes next. Makes it tougher for them to bail and get a different job, and should at least make them think long and hard before they do some of this under-the-table crap.
  22. Now I'm no prophet but even I called for Bill Hall to be traded after his stand out season as it was an outlier at age 26. Hall actually had back-to-back stand out seasons in both 2005 and 2006, so there wasn't really an outlier.
  23. Hardy has had only one good season offensively. Which is one more than Escobar has had... Hardy has actually had two very good seasons offensively for a shortstop. If he continues to hit as he has in May, there's no doubt that he'll end this year with his third good season.
  24. Looper and Suppan are likely done after the Brewers and they shouldn't want Bush back given a normal market. That leaves the potential Lee and they likely couldn't afford him. So that means they'd be clearing something around 20-25 million off the payroll from the first three- I find it hard to believe that they couldn't either retain Lee or find a couple of solid starters for that money. Not to mention that at that point they'll have to make some decisions on Fielder and/or Hardy as well, so there's a strong possibility that they'd get some good arms back for them as well.
