  1. Macha really wasn't that terrible but his refusal to ever use his backup catcher was dumb I agree. Macha's worst flaw was a totally flat personality and complete inability to relate to any of his players. Roenicke was the opposite, he generally seemed respected but was a terrible manager. He didn't seem to have a clue. He just seemed to do whatever fit into Small Ball 101. I didn't think Yost was as bad as people made him out to be, heck the guy has a World Series now. Remember him being a pretty bad bullpen manager. It also drove me nuts that he would bat the pitcher 8th but then bat Tony Gwynn Jr. #2 and thus totally defeat the purpose of batting the pitcher 8th. None of the guys in the 15 years or so before that really ever had an ounce of talent to work with and are pretty tough to evaluate. I agree on Counsell being the best of the bunch. I liked Sveum and wish he had gotten the job in 2009 instead of Macha, but we'll never know how it would have worked out.
  2. Here we go again. Can't disagree with one thing without the dramatics of "you'd think we're below. 500" or "let's get behind him". "Whining" "Complaining" I never said Counsell wasn't doing great. I think he's a great manager, it does mean he is exempt from ever being critiqued. I hope he's here a long time. One can disagree with someone they like on something without it being a big flipping deal. I love my wife, it does not mean I agree with everything she does.
  3. Archer is no TOR pitcher. No way I'd pay what he will demand for a #3 pitcher. Absolutely no way. I guess my point was, and is, that there isn't and won't be a TOR available at the deadline to acquire. Most are in agreement then, let's just go get a pitcher, not a bank breaker. I see Hamels tossed out there, Gausman, Duffy, etc. etc. Okay, why? In what way are any of these guys an upgrade from the best 4 from a group of Nelson/Anderson/Davies/Chacin/Guerra? And if they're not, why in the world do we want to use our limited trade capital available to acquire them?
  4. I said about 2 weeks ago that I felt the only reason Braun was still batting 3rd was Counsell being concerned about offending him. I do give Braun credit for this for sure. With that said, and I know people are going to disagree with me, I'm mildly annoyed that he had to say anything at all. If it got to the point where Braun felt he should say something, it probably wasn't the first time he thought it. Likewise, if Counsell immediately agreed to it, it probably wasn't the first time he thought it either. This is Counsell's lineup, not the players. At times, tough decisions will need to be made. Maybe even more unpopular decisions among the players than this, and he is going to need to make those tough decisions. They aren't going to always be handed to him like Braun did.
  5. See 2 posts above yours.
  6. Not sure if you're serious or not, I could be mistaken on it. But I would not want to move Villar off 2nd. He was pretty bad on that side of the infield and seems serviceable and finally comfortable at 2nd. Would just leave him be.
  7. Barnes for the 9th? Between Barnes, Houser, Lopez, Woodruff, and Asher, I've stopped trying to remember who is here and who isn't. Pretty sure Barnes is here.
  8. Next time any of you guys feel that the game threads are too 'negative' when the team is good, I highly recommend going through Kato Kaelin's twitter feed.
  9. Simple solution, 60 second rule. If you can't figure it out within 60 seconds, screens go dark and call stands by rule. 90 seconds in the playoffs.
  10. Albers has to be one of the most underrated relievers in baseball. We fretted about not giving Swarzak 7M a year and Stearns said nah, why don't I just give this guy 2.5?
  11. Something really needs to happen to hold umpires accountable for how bad they are. Great day for Braun today!
  12. Suter is what he is. He's fine as a swingman/longman who can fill in as a 5 when you have injuries. That's fine, and that has value. I don't mean to imply that it doesn't. I just think some people make him out to be better than he is. If he is in your rotation, you should be looking to upgrade.
  13. Suter usually gets his 'shelled' inning out of the way right away. Not today.
  14. Or anyone else, including our other pitchers and trade targets, could blow out an arm and not pitch in the postseason. Could happen to anyone. Yes, Nelson is at a higher risk but all the medical information we have at this point is that the type of shoulder injury he sustained should not affect his long-term prognosis.
  15. Oh and we are totally due for a bad series, I get that. I just really really don't want it to come in THIS series.
  16. Or we can just keep riding Villar, who hasn't been bad both offensively and defensively. He also hasn't been very good. He's been better than last year for sure, but he's on pace to be about a 1 WAR player. Huge hole is probably a bit of an exaggeration but it's very upgradeable.
  17. Yeah, I think something like this is a lot more likely. Not necessarily this specifically but something like it. I'd also like to remind that Stearns doesn't necessarily fall in line with whatever conventional wisdom is about our rotation, and I'm guessing he doesn't fall in line with conventional wisdom about needing high end starters to win in the playoffs.
  18. Looks like the plan right now against RHP is a pretty even split for Braun and Santana for now.
  19. Well you're not going to have a 5 man rotation in the playoffs, you're going to have 4. So Nelson for sure, Anderson too unless he totally tanks, Guerra most likely, and then whoever the next best one is at the time. I stand by what I said, that the playoff plan for the Brewers would be to get 12 outs or so with 1-2 runs or less allowed by their 'starters' and get 15 from the pen, which is totally feasible throughout the postseason with numerous days off and 9 guys in the pen. People always want these theoretical aces which are neither available nor do we have the trade chips to acquire. Hamels has some really scary peripherals and flyball numbers which makes me doubt how effective he'll be late in the year. Not every veteran arm acquisition pitches like Verlander for the playoffs, and not every young arm just stinks in the playoffs. Look at Darvish. All these names thrown around are just depth adds that are no real guarantee to be better than our current best 4 options. Archer is probably the one possible TOR pitcher that could be added, and he's absolutely no guarantee shown by his mediocre numbers this year. And he'll STILL cost Hiura+ to add. Is that really the best use of our resources? We'll get Nelson back and go into August with him and what else we already have, my prediction. Anything that's good enough to be a clear upgrade in our rotation will be too expensive to justify the cost.
  20. I think people still beating the starting pitching drum are going to remain disappointed. They've got Jimmy coming back, Guerra has done a nice job, and Chase, Chacin and Davies aren't going anywhere. Jimmy is going to be your big deadline acquisition. This is even assuming Peralta and Burnes don't crack the rotation at some point. Our rotation is very average-ish, but most of the names being thrown out are just more of that same. Obviously if there's a Sale or Kershaw type being thrown around at the deadline, they'd be crazy not to go for it, but that's not happening. I think people worry too much about whether this rotation is good enough to compete in the playoffs. This is a bullpen oriented staff and that would continue in the playoffs. These 5-6 inning outings from starters will probably turn into 3-5 inning outings, with the pen carrying the load every game which they can get away with because there's a lot more days off and you have more bullpen arms because of your smaller rotation.
  21. Brinson: .156/.202/.272/.474 Woof. The scary thing is that line is remarkably consistent for what he did in about 50 PAs for us last year. You can't write a guy off as a bust after just a couple hundred ABs, but its looking more likely that the Brewers cashed in their Lewis Brinson trade chip just in time to get value.
  22. I give him a lot of credit. He hasn't embarrassed himself at all. You can justify his numbers at AA a lot better than 1994 Michael Jordan.
