  1. Their bench is very short. Thames out already, Braun and Pina hurt. Is Sogard the only “available” position player left on the bench today, or am I missing someone? If Pina and Braun are both "unavailable".
  2. If its already to this point they need to just start putting guys on the DL if they anticipate a 5-6 day injury. They can't afford to be playing with a 23 man roster every day. You've got minor league depth and options like Phillips, Broxton, Nottingham, etc, use them and give your injured guys a full 10 days to heal up instead of this day to day crap.
  3. You won't pinch hit for the pitcher with the tying run on 3rd, yet you pull the pitcher anyway. What the hell, Craig.
  4. Packer fans -- remember how many years went by when you'd wish every morning to pick up your phone and see news of a Dom Capers firing? I'm definitely getting to that point with Darnell Coles. This guy is running out of excuses.
  5. Noah is obviously a stud but these ABs are just pathetic. It's like they're from the tropics and have never experienced weather in the 40s. Like they just want to get out of here as quick as they can.
  6. I'm figuring Broxton this time instead of Phillips.
  7. Jeffress seems to get somewhat similar usage to Hader, though they typically and obviously prefer Hader for the most crucial of situations when available. But they like flexible roles for both to use for multiple innings as needed or bring in or remove in the middle of innings. I doubt that we have a permanently defined closer until Knebel returns. Albers I would guess gets the most traditional 1 inning opportunities with Barnes and possibly Jeffress getting chances as well. Hader won't be the closer but will get saves on an as needed and when available basis and I would expect most of his will be of the multi-inning variety.
  8. I'm beginning to think that the short starts and Counsell's quick hooks are part of a strategy. They seem to be pulling starters as soon as they start running into trouble. If that really is what they are planning to do, then perhaps Hader does have more value as a shut-down pen piece. I don't know ... the pitching usage has just been odd so far this year. Personally I would love to see Hader in the rotation, but I guess I'm starting to understand more why that may not happen. Relief innings definitely CAN be more valuable -- you can pick and choose your innings for crucial situations. You don't have that luxury with a starter. It's once every 5 days and that's that. My question would be why relievers typically throw so much less than starters and if there is efficient usage to close that gap so you're not at 200 innings for starters and 50-75 for relievers.
  9. Bandy would be grandfathered in and not subject to the league policy. Might be banned at Citi field though. What? So you can be exempt from an MLB policy? Sure can. The tobacco ban passed in the 16-17 off-season but all players who had already played by then were grandfathered and exempt. So Bandy is good to go, but no dipping for Josh Hader.
  10. Bandy would be grandfathered in and not subject to the league policy. Might be banned at Citi field though.
  11. MLB umpires are unionized and basically untouchable for poor job performance, that's the sad thing. There is absolutely no accountability for bad umpires. CB Bucknor and Joe West are living proof of that. They get their little report card, probably trash it, and go out and do it again the next day. There's no fines, no suspensions, no discipline for umpires who suck at their job.
  12. Umps just get worse every year. I'm not saying any schlub could do it, but NFL referees need to watch 22 guys at one time. You basically need to see one thing. Is it really that hard?
  13. Yesterday aside, an early hook seems to be a team design. Deep and good pen designed to eat up innings at the back end of games. But yeah I probably would have let Anderson try to get through the 7th until a man reached. Chase is cruising today and yesterday Davies is struggling and Counsell tries to push him as far as he can. Cost us the game in part.
  14. We have no idea if it will be a big deal. Chronic injuries have sapped his effectiveness the last couple seasons. It doesn't have to keep him out of the lineup to be a big deal if it keeps him from being fully effective.
  15. You could also theorize that his deterioration in his early to mid 30s stems from chronic use since his Miami Hurricane days. Truthfully we will never know for sure.
  16. It's always a freaking jam shot, blooper, or infield single.
  17. Met fans -- "OMG! Screams! Our pitcher hit a routine fly to center!"
  18. How many games have been postponed already this season? Sheesh, I know it's April but it feels like we can basically count on 2 affiliates playing on a daily basis.
  19. They have the technology to replace these incompetent egomaniacs and I don't know why anyone is still against it. Either go to an electronic zone or get a lot better umpiring. The umpiring still sucks every single year so just go to the damn e-zone.
  20. That's why you're far better off being content with Braun being a 75% of the time player and hope you can get near 100% effectiveness that much time than forcing him into the lineup every day. Hes been playing too much -- through no fault of Counsell, because they've had other OF injury issues too. But he needs those maintenance days regardless of who else isn't available. Hopefully nothing more than precautionary.
  21. That was not a pitch Braun should have ever swung at, but it was a great piece of hitting it anyway.
  22. Is Cameron Roegner someone we need to start paying attention to?
  23. To be honest Villar's start hasn't been nearly as positive as people think. The .302 average is about all there is and its very hollow. The OBP matches the .302 BA because he's yet to draw a single walk this season and his power up until tonight has been almost non-existent. The OPS coming into tonight was actually lower than last season even with a .406 BABIP which probably isn't sustainable so he's even been a bit lucky. The K rate is slightly down but still over 25%. Don't get me wrong, I thought the same until recently and I think he should be the guy at 2nd and have a long leash, I'm just saying when you look past his batting average his start actually hasn't been very good.
