  1. DeLeon being a part of the deal is a total myth. There was never anything reputable that reported that he was part of the deal. If Puig and DeLeon were on the table and we were taking back just McCarthy's salary, the deal would have been made. And if not, it certainly would have been revisited in the off-season. But the Dodgers prioritized 2B for a reason. Sorry, I just can't believe anyone thinks that the Dodgers agreed to send us Puig and DeLeon, take almost all of Braun's contract, and we were sitting there haggling over a 2nd prospect and let the clock expire. Stearns is smarter than that. There's been nothing ever reported on DeLeon having been on the table for Braun.
  2. I can't argue with any of the arguments above. I've warmed up to the idea of keeping Braun, not for any sentimental reasons, but because he continues to remain productive and if a fair price isn't met, we shouldn't deal him. I've had my doubts about him, I'll admit. Ultimately, at his age, and with the increasing number of nagging injuries he's had over the years, I've doubted he can sustain elite production. This is amplified by the questions of his past PED use. But he's surprised me so far, and though he's realistically more of a 140 game a year player now, that's really not that big of a deal. I still think he probably regresses some by 2020 but he's starting to look more like someone who will have a floor of at least an average player, rather than falling off completely. Even then, 3 years from now with the rising costs of salaries, if he was average, 19M would likely not be an overpay. I guess my main concern over it is the logjam of legitimate OF prospects we're carrying and how he fits into that, but ultimately if he remains productive there's no reason to replace him. It would be perfect if we had the DH in the NL, but ultimately these things tend to sort themselves out. There's nothing saying too that Braun has to be the one traded, we could always look to move other excess outfielders to fill other holes on the team.
  3. Back on topic, I don't really have a ton of confidence in the pen long -term, because it's mainly made up of roster churn guys. Barnes and Knebel look like keepers, and Feliz should be fine, but other than that you've got Milone now probably, and then Hughes, Marinez, and Drake, all of whom were DFA by their respective teams in the last year. Marinez was decent for us last year, and every so often you can get lucky with some of these guys, but to put things bluntly half of our pen is made up of guys that no one really wanted. So certainly there's room for improvement. Frankly, guys like Hader, Woodruff and Lopez could probably come in and help the pen now, but there are service time concerns and you want to give them every chance to stick in the rotation first. Wang has pitched well so far for the Sky Sox, and ultimately I'd still like to take a shot on his upside over Milone and Suter, neither of which I'm particularly confident in. Internally, if Garza pitches well, we could keep him in the rotation when Guerra returns and move Peralta to the pen where his stuff might play very well in short stints. That's of course if Peralta isn't continuing to pitch very well out of the rotation.
  4. Wait? Am I lost? I thought this was the Optimism Thread (!) In addition to some of the newest/newer MLB Brewers playing much better than expected (Shaw/Thames/Pina/Bandy etc) Josh Hader has a 2.57 ERA in 3 starts in AAA and Lewis Brinson has started the season in AAA hitting .355/.412/.645 That gives me plenty of optimism about the future Ha, it is, but I was simply replying to a previous poster asking about whether Broxton being hit has gotten into his head. When evaluating the talent on the farm this year I find myself focusing much more on pitching than in previous years. The lineup is probably good enough right now, and especially I think with Brinson, to be playoff caliber already. Whether this rebuild is almost over or whether it still has a few years left lies largely on the shoulders of Josh Hader and Brandon Woodruff and whether or not they can be immediately successful, and to a lesser extent, also on Ortiz, Lopez, and Bickford. Wow, typing that I can't remember a time when the Brewers had 5 starting pitchers that are either currently top 100 prospects or have been within the last year. Diplan is also right there knocking on the door of the lists and Ponce and Burnes have had very nice starts to the season.
  5. As bitterly disappointed as I am about how those last 2 games went, I think it's important to take a step back and realize it was still a 6-3 road trip, and 2 series against playoff teams from last year. Played the defending champs very competitively in their place and probably should have swept them. Does this team have flaws that need to improve, definitely. But they're better than I thought they would be.
  6. Funny how Counsell can appreciate John Jay fouling off pitches and never hesitate to run Nieuwehuis out there as a late inning pinch hitter when he's having trouble making any contact. You get what you pay for and Brewers aren't willing to spend even a little to bolster a bench with a proven major league bat. Nieuwenhuis sucks but he really doesn't have anything to do with why we lost tonight. The system is loaded with up and coming OF prospects and a guy like Phillips will probably replace Nieuwenhuis at some point this year. Jay at $8M would be a waste of money for this team .
  7. Who said anything about being a contender??? Clearly you haven't been reading the Thames/Braun trade threads.
  8. All of Torres, Knebel and Feliz had some pretty key walks. I thought Counsell managed the pen as well as he could have tonight. Knebel didn't have his best stuff but he came back to get that second out and then I thought Counsell pulled the trigger at the right time to bring in Feliz and he was able to get through it to still take the lead into the 9th. There is only so much Counsell can do. Guys have to be able to throw strikes. I thought the 6th where Torres retires the first two up 4-1 and then gives up 2 straight walks followed by an easy RBI single was really a key turning point in the game. No excuse when you're up 4-1 and the next 3 runs that score to tie it were all put on via the walk. Our pitching staff is not good enough to be putting runners on for free with leads.
  9. I wouldn't scoff at the idea of anyone getting suspended for PEDs, nobody would surprise me. And I have no idea if Thames uses or not. But I think guys are entitled to at least the benefit of the doubt until there is reason to suspect otherwise. I think it's very bush league to publicly question a player's integrity based solely on the fact that you couldn't retire him all night.
  10. I'm not even mad about the HR to Russell. Happens. Not a great pitch but at least he went after him. Better than a walkoff wild pitch . What I'm mad about is, Torres walks a guy in the 6th, he comes around to score, it's 4-2. Knebel walks a guy in the 8th, he comes around to score, 4-3. Feliz walks a guy in the 9th, he comes around to score, 4-4. Unacceptable. THAT'S where we lost the game. We had control of this game and let them chip away at it little by little until we gave it up for the simple and stupid reason that we didn't throw strikes.
  11. It's two blown 3 run leads on back to back days, both of which we had chances and failed time and time again. Emotionally, it's more aggravating because of who it came against.
  12. I hate you, Brewers. If you're going to pull this garbage two straight games, pull it against the Marlins or the Padres, I really don't care, or at least I can get over it right away. But of course it had to be against the mother freaking Cubs. Of course it did.
  13. Anyone who thinks this team is a contender with the pitching we have is nuts.
  14. Walk guys, walks end up scoring, and you don't cash in on bases loaded 1 out and scoring opportunities, you get exactly what you deserve. 3 runs off walks. Had a chance to take a series at Wrigley from this hated team, and we Brewer'ed it away in classic Brewer fashion.
  15. Wow do Cub fans and players whine excessively about pitches that are easily in the strikezone.
  16. And now your walk is on 3rd, after your walk led to a run in the 6th.
  17. What a crappy day for Thames, he only reached base 3 times.
  18. Felt pretty good about that AB when he was up 3-0, then Villar crapped on it pretty quick. Hopefully Thames can knock a line drive off of whatever douche in the stands just yelled 'Steroids!'
  19. Feliz is your daddy, Baez. Some insurance would be nice here? Really don't want to have to sweat through a 9th that resembles that 8th in any way.
  20. Probably the right call here to go with Feliz. Knebel was already at 30 pitches. Just hope it works out.
  21. That's a big out, but you're only 1/3rd of the way there. How about a DP ball? Edit: Or just, you know, forget about the runners. Bandy should have had him though.
