  1. A few years ago, we traded Hader despite being in 1st place. Things kind of fell apart from there, not really directly because of that, but things just all sort of went downhill. Anyone wonder if that year will give Arnold some pause on making a similar move this year at risk of disrupting the clubhouse and team chemistry?
  2. He looked like he was on the downside of his career from 2019 to 2021, and then somehow seemed to figure it out again. Not sure if he just reinvented himself as a pitcher or what. It’s a bit odd to me that Quintana wasn’t even able to get 5M a year.
  3. I’m pretty sure Frankie Montas started our second playoff game last year. There's a lot of reason why we didn’t get out of the first round last year, but lack of quality starting pitching didn’t help. I am also not opposed to trading from our SP depth if the value is just too good to pass up, but I’d rather go into the playoffs this year with too much starting pitching depth than not enough.
  4. #2 really isn’t true at all. $15M a year is peanuts on an MLB contract in 2025. You can’t even buy a Rhys Hoskins or a Frankie Montas for that. Plus a trade doesn’t necessarily mean that we’re taking on the entire value of the contract. Downside of his career, I don’t know, you’re assuming he’s just washed up and cooked, just because he’s 32 and having a down year doesn't mean he’s for sure cooked. I’m sure people thought the same about Yelich the last couple years.
  5. Definitely impressed with Vaughn this series and have already gotten more out of him than I expected. No matter what happens, we got him for pretty much nothing. And even if all it ends up amounting to is a few moments, and not a future 1B, that’s totally fine. Some guys are here for a short time and in that time they have a few memories and help us win games. Those kinds of players matter, too. Rowdy Tellez was one of those guys for us.
  6. Absolute trash AB by Monasterio. Did he realize he didn’t have to be Joey Ortiz just because he was batting for him?
  7. The opportunity to win this game was when we had Glasnow on his heels in the early innings with the bases loaded and 1 out and Bauers and Ortiz came up and couldn’t do anything.
  8. Correct. And he’s accumulated that negative WAR despite having enough opportunities for nearly 2000 career plate appearances. wRC+ is going to paint him in a better light than WAR, but he’s still 16% below average for his career, and it’s an entirely offensive stat.
  9. Well, the game probably hands in the balance on this next AB. You definitely can’t afford to give up more than 1, and even that might be too much.
  10. This is where WAR, while not being perfect, (especially when it comes to relief pitching) does a pretty good job at evaluating the totality of a position players’ contributions, both offensively and defensively, regardless of the role, and both fWAR and bWAR are in agreement that Jake Bauers, for his career, has literally been less valuable than an average AAA replacement player. Yes, it’s true that Bauers has been better this year than his larger career body of work, but that’s a pretty low bar. My point was that he is fortunate that he has received opportunities, whereas there are likely players similar to him who will toil in the minors most of their career and never get that shot.
  11. Quintana is one of those guys where the results always exceed the stuff, somehow. I’m not huge on the “smart, savvy veteran” rhetoric but it definitely applies here.
  12. I don’t know what is going on. His pitch selection is horrendous. It’s like he’s just not seeing the ball at all. I don’t know what the answer is but he may need to go down for awhile if it doesn’t improve.
  13. How about for his career? He's literally below replacement level for his career. And using an arbitrary 100 ABs at the position among 49 players with 30 MLB teams to call him an “average 1B” is the best possible example of how anyone can use stats to state any narrative they’d like.
  14. It wouldn’t have if the 3rd base umpire had done the job that he gets paid for correctly.
  15. That’s exactly the kind of AB with the bases loaded that got Joey benched in the first place last weekend. Stare at a couple fastballs down the middle, swing at one way above the zone.
  16. Bauers is one of those guys who is going to have a long MLB career and I really don’t understand why.
  17. Do we need to limit Woodruff? I know they’ll of course be cautious with him returning from a major injury, but as a vet and not appearing in a game until July this year, I figured he’d be getting fully ramped up by October, not dialed back. But I could be totally wrong, I know nothing of the potential limitations of his injury.
  18. I actually don’t think they want to send Miz to the pen. His future is clearly as a starter and he’s just been so good in that role. I don’t think they want to mess much with his routine and rhythm. However, they’ll need to find a way as the season goes on to start limiting his innings and pitch counts, especially if they want him available in October.. What about dialing him back to 4-5 innings and piggybacking him with someone they stretch out, maybe Ashby?
  19. It’s just that time of year. My money would be heavily on the side of Acuna still being a Brave in a month.
  20. Yeah, I would agree with most of this. Deals like this are of great reluctance to both sides, so to actually get one done just is so rare. A Soto type trade (from the Nats) probably comes along maybe every 5 years? It takes the perfect storm of circumstances and perfect match. And I just don’t even think the Braves are in such a hopeless position that they’d be looking at a full out rebuild which is what this deal would signify. I can understand the temptation, because we just do not have anyone on this lineup on Acuna’s level who can just carry the load offensively. It’s more just a group of mostly competent but not spectacular. But we also finally are in a really good spot in both our MLB roster and farm system and I’m sure we’d like to sustain that.
